Rating: 4 out of 5 stars. This book offers valuable insights into the power of mindfulness and its potential to transform our experiences of life. As someone who is seeking to overcome old beliefs and self-sabotage, I found it to be a helpful resource. One of the key aspects discussed in the book is that we are not defined by our thoughts and we have the ability to step back from them. Trussell reminds us reminder that the negative and ugly thoughts that often fill our minds are not inherently true and we have the ability to change our thoughts if they are not serving us well. The book shares the benefits of meditation and reasons for incorporating it into our lives. I found it challenging to practice meditations from a book, but it has encouraged me to return to a meditation app. "You Are Not Your Thoughts" is a concise book with short chapters, which makes it easy to read and digest. It is an excellent tool for someone who is new to the concept of mindfulness and is seeking a practical self-help book without unnecessary waffle. ~ Kate Davis (Reviewer), NetGalley
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars. This is quite a short book but it has plenty of advice. Lots of useful suggestions for mindfulness and I would recommend it if you are looking for an easy to use self help book. ~ Helen Doroszkiewicz (Reviewer) , NetGalley
Rating: 5 out of 5 stars. For a small book there are many messages inside. Last year I started meditating and found reading from different perspectives helpful. Her statement about finally getting mindfulness is how I felt about it. We need to know we are separate from our thoughts and the thoughts of others. This book gives us exercises and meditations to do that. We need to focus on what we are doing now and stop multi-tasking. We do better when we focus on one thing at a time, living in the now. I read this book several times and got something different out of it with each read. This is definitely one of those books that should be on everyone’s night table, so they are reminded each morning and night to be more mindful. ~ Dawn Thomas (Reviewer), NetGalley
I have not done a lot of meditation in the last few months, but using this book was very easy to use and it gave me techinques to use. That makes things simpler. ~ Destiny Bridwell , NetGalley
It's incredibly easy to get lost in your thoughts and insecurities, especially when outside forces brings you down and you can't help but maybe wondering if what people say about you is true. This was a testament and reminder that the voices in your head spouting negative and ugly things about yourself as well as the world around you is not inherently true and reminds you that you are not your thoughts, you are more than that. You are more than what you think, what you know, and what you do. Try not to get too lost in your thoughts and believe them. ~ Gen D, NetGalley
This might not be life changing stuff (or it might!) but it is useful, it is easy to read, and it definitely stimulates thoughts and meanderings and that is to be applauded. If you know nothing about meditation and 'being in the now', this is a perfect place to start. If you know a lot already, it is a perfect place to gather bon mots for your commonplace book and then useful for contemplation. ~ Anne Maguire, NetGalley
I am training to be a counsellor and i would buy all of my clients this book as i really think it can help people. It gives really good tips on how to achive mindfulness and nobody would regret reading it. ~ Beanie Luck, NetGalley
This little book brings much needed clarity to the world of mindfulness and talks you through the practice step by step. Short chapters make it quick and easy to read and perfect to refer back to and the language is like speaking to a friend. Definitely one I would recommend for anyone wanting to learn more and interested in giving it a go! ~ Kate Woodhouse, NetGalley
Taming a runaway brain is a challenging task. A thought forms, then multiplies, and becomes distorted until it takes the form of one or more new lives – excessive worry, excruciating frustration, crippling anxiety, or debilitating depression, or all of the above. The runaway brain darts in and out of the past and the future and ignores the present moment. Learning to call time out on the runaway brain, to slow down, to pay attention to now, to take care of this moment, and to live mindfully is not a simple thing to learn. This short, easy-to-read guide compiles common tips and methods to help the reader begin a mindfulness practice, and stick with it. ~ Linda Van Sistine - Yost, NetGalley

I would recommend this for anyone who has heard about mindfulness and meditation but has never tried it; for anyone who has tried meditation but 'not got on with it'; or for anyone who would love to find some happiness but just don't know how to go about it. It is also great for people like me who know the benefits of meditation, but sometimes just get too caught up with day to day 'stuff' and need a reminder that there are simple steps we can take to find joy in each day. ~ Rosalind Bryden, NetGalley

Self help books usually scare me. But this one didn’t. I think the book was strong and filled with strong ideas on how to train your brain to be stronger, to have stronger concepts, and to help you avoid negative thoughts. This book is a great introduction on mindfulness and meditation and approaches the subject in a way that is attainable for any reader to take on the challenge. Another great idea would to be to utilize the Oak app to meditate after having read this book. This book isn’t long. It’s pretty short but still packs a detailed punch on the concept of mindfulness. I’m glad I discovered the book. While brief, it’s strong and provides a great opportunity for any reader to learn more. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about mindfulness or meditation or wants a new perspective. ~ Meagan Loyd , https://meaganloydcollective.tumblr.com

This book was a happy surprise. I've read a lot of books on meditation and mindfulness, and often they are trite and too distant from real life. You Are Not Your Thoughts, however, is simple, both in its brevity and it's language. It feels like Trussell is just chatting with you, talking about things she's learned and wisdom she's gained. Definitely recommend this book to anyone new to mindfulness but would also recommend to anyone who wants a refresher. ~ Erin Sladen, NetGalley

You Are Not is a challenge. A worthy one. But, one, nonetheless. It's kind of mind blowing! Just work with it. The payoff is great. ~ Ginae McDonald, Ginae Reviews
You Are Not Your Thoughts by Frances Trussell is a quick and easy guide on mindfulness. Unlike other books on this topic, You Are Not Your Thoughts describes what being mindful really is and how you can achieve it…yes, you! What’s unique about this book is that it is written using simple language and page long chapters that easily flow into the next. For example, a counting breath meditation is followed by a chapter that discusses the discouragement we can feel when attempting to meditate, which is then followed by a chapter on the breath. Most books tend to brush past the time and patience that learning something new will take, but Frances Trussell makes a point to be honest and upfront about how learning mindfulness is a journey that requires us to unlearn a lot of things. Her words of encouragement and explanation of how mindfulness will change your life are needed in a time when most authors make mindfulness sound like an exclusive rite of passage. Mindfulness doesn’t have to be a complicated ritual or practiced in a yoga studio. Mindfulness is so easy it can be done in anyplace at anytime by anyone. If you’re looking for a manual on how to do it, this is the one! This book brings mindfulness back to the basics. Simply enjoying a hot cup of tea, noticing your breath, and finding a reason to smile everyday are all ways to detach from your thoughts. It’s this simplicity that is the secret magic of mindfulness. ~ Tanja, https://theluminessence.wordpress.com/2018/07/26/you-are-not-your-thoughts-the-secret-magic-of-mindfulness-by-frances-trussell-review/
I enjoyed this quick read, for all of its valuable insight and tools for living in the now. Suffering from anxiety, I know that my doctors have encouraged this form of treatment but I've been a tad reluctant. This book breaks it down very simply and efficiently making it a lot less overwhelming than many books I have read on the subject. Being overwhelmed is a huge struggle in my life so the way it is presented is just as important as the subject matter, its the spoon full of sugar approach that makes me rate this book as high as I have. ~ Joyce Wheeler, GoodReads
This is a wonderful book on mindfulness that explains it very well and shows you how to do it easily. I enjoyed this book. I recommend it to anyone interested in mindfulness. ~ Rose Frum, NetGalley
Mindfulness is a great way to free yourself from worry, regret, of daily stress and of taking control of your emotional life. So many things in our lives are outside of our control, but our thoughts are something that, with practice, can be shifted to focus more often on what "is" rather than "what ifs". This book speaks simply and clearly to the benefits of mindfulness with great examples of how to put mindfulness to work in your daily life, finding the happiness and joy that is already present in every day. ~ Tiffany Howard, NetGalley
This is definitely one of the better meditation books I’ve read. I used my bus journey home from work to read it, slowly, and I can genuinely tell you that I’ve never found traffic jams so relaxing! ~ Sarah Little, Little Frog Scribbles
Are you plagued by overthinking that eventually leads to depression and even suicidal thoughts? Scared that your life is going nowhere and you're doomed to the darkness forever? Then this is the book for you. Overall, this was a really interesting book, and it's really worth the read. I definitely recommend it for anyone at any part of their lives, good or bad, because I think it's just so important that everyone should know it. After all, all we have is the present. We live in a world that is too stressed, too obsessed, too over-the-top which permeates nearly every aspect of our waking moment. It is nice to learn how to step back, breathe deep and live in the moment. This is a super short book, a very quick read. I took time before writing this review so that I could actually put some of the suggestions into play, to see if it was all hocus-pocus or not. It wasn't. For me, it has been a real eye-opening, thoughtful experience, one that I hope you also will try. ~ Mackey Stanley, NetGalley
This wonderful little book is so simple but so truthful--it really resonated with me, right from the very first page! I want to buy copies of this book for everyone I know because I truly believe almost everyone could benefit from the messages contained here. At its most basic, we have the power to be happy by choosing to live in the moment we are in, and choosing to not let our thoughts control us. The author guides us through exercises and a logical roadmap and discussion of basic concepts, but she shoots very straight. She doesn't sugar coat it; I felt very much like she was speaking directly to me and that she KNEW me. :-) I suspect, deep down, many of us are trapped in circular worrisome thinking--replaying the past, worrying about the future, missing out on what is happening RIGHT NOW. I know I am. But the author gives us tools to help us stop the madness and learn how to just BE. It sounds simple because it IS. Doesn't mean it's easy...but she puts the information into easily digestible bites, in easy to do steps...I felt lighter and happier just a few chapters in, and by the end, I felt as if something fundamentally MAJOR had changed. I have to keep working on it, but seriously--while this is not necessarily NEW information, this book is written in a very straightforward, appealing manner that feels like you can start right this second, right on this page, right NOW. And your life will change. Just start with the first page. ~ Brooke Hudson , NetGalley
This brief book is a lovely addition to materials already available on the topic of mindfulness. The writing is almost lyrical and I'd get into a rhythm while reading that was relaxing on its own. The author puts a big emphasis on the importance of meditation in a mindful life, and provides several exercises. I appreciate the kind tone and straightforward writing style. ~ Ramona Mead , NetGalley
This fantastic little book makes a big impact. A must read for those wanting to know what mindfulness is really all about and how to easily bring that into their lives. Every teenager needs a copy of this, probably most adults too. FIVE STARS ~ Olivia Buxton, Mail On Sunday Health
