Afterlife & reincarnation, Near-death experience, Personal memoirs
Across thousands of years, people have described one of the most astonishing of all human phenomena: the near-death experience (NDE), the subjective experience of an Afterlife, a place where we apparently survive death.
The more powerful the NDE, the more profound the after effects. The ambitious reset their priorities. Atheists change their values. Doctors rethink their beliefs.
But what if the after effects of an NDE were undeniable? What if someone suddenly developed the ability to produce high quality paintings of their NDE, a new-found skill that went far beyond the artistic ability they had before? And what if that same person then suddenly acquired the ability to compose classical symphonies after their NDE? And their symphonies were then premiered at sell out orchestral concerts, even though, to this day, they are unable to read or write a single note of musical notation. Wouldn't this be proof that even a cynic would have a hard time explaining?
After his NDE, this is exactly what happened to David. And this is his story.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars. Unusual and interesting book about David Ditchfield's near death experience. Found it very credible and very readable. ~ Elaine Bateman (Reviewer) , NetGalley
This book is highly recommended by some very big names in the world of Near-Death Experiences (NDEs), and there is a short and compelling foreword by Dr Raymond Moody who is one of these people. He is well-known for his classic bestselling book Life After Life. Shine On is an interesting, well-observed, and slyly witty atmospheric account with good descriptions of places and events written in an open easy to read style even though David’s story is not told entirely in chronological order. There is even a classic scene that features being woken up by an alarm clock. The main narrative of the book is accompanied by dialogue that is well-focussed and realistic and so provides a life-like interaction between David and the other characters involved. It is a good read and I would recommend it. Fortean Times February 2021/ FT402 In all the works of NDE's and OOBE's, so-called 'crisis' exteriorisation are among the most mysterious. Here is David Ditchfield's own story of "How I fell under a speeding train, journeyed to the afterlife, and the astonishing proof I brought back with me." Despite its novelistic style, there is a lot of good and sensible data and discussion to back it up. A small appendix at the back holds the testimony of six people (including co-author Jones) who were with Ditchfield from his accident to his recovery, seeing how it changed him and who vouch for his statements. A cracking read with an approving foreword by Dr Raymond Moody. ~ Fortean Times February 2021/ FT402 , Review
As Raymond Moody writes in the foreword, ‘this is indeed one of the most gripping accounts of near- death experience that I have read’ – I couldn’t agree more. The journey is an extraordinary one by any account from a nearly bankrupt alcoholic manual labourer with virtually no qualifications to artist and composer via a near-death experience resulting from being dragged under a moving train after seeing a friend off. The author’s psychological and emotional state prior to the NDE is pretty desperate, also in view of his problematic love life and lack of self-esteem. In the experience itself, like many others, the author experiences the light of pure unconditional love. He describes the agony of his physical state and gradual rehabilitation, as a result of which he puts a new life together and has the urge to begin painting, something he has never done before, in order to depict his experience. In coming to terms with the meaning of his experience, he gained some insights and receives healing at a spiritualist church, as well as having a counsellor to help him move forward psychologically – especially in overcoming his fear of love, a widespread condition. At a certain point, he begins to hear phrases of music in his head, and solicits the help of his brother in transposing these onto a full score via a computer programme. He had played the guitar, but had no knowledge of classical music, nor could he read a score. Cutting a long story short, his symphony in three movements is premiered by the local orchestra in St Ives to great acclaim. This is a quite astonishing development, considering where the story began, the extent of his injuries and his lack of artistic and musical education........– and I found it hauntingly beautiful and evocative, and surely a strong indication of genuine transcendence. ~ David Lorimer, Paradigm Explorer
K. J. HARDY 5.0 out of 5 stars Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 September 2020 From Darkness To Divine Light A spiritually uplifting true story of a man whose terrifying near death experience leaves him with a sense that he is not alone and his life - far from being over is destined for much more. Shine On: The Remarkable Story of How I Fell Under a Speeding Train, Journeyed to the Afterlife, and the Astonishing Proof I Brought Back with Me, by David Ditchfield and J.S. Jones, PhD, recounts the events before, during and after a train accident that send Mr. Ditchfield to a realm of light, put him in contact with beings and energies so pure and delightful that he was changed forever. Thank you to the publisher for sending me a copy in exchange for an honest review. The books offers a chronological narrative of the events, starting a few months before the accident when Mr. Ditchfield’s life was the opposite of perfect. Not having a penny in his pockets, unemployed, alcoholic, undereducated and ashamed by his wealthy, unfaithful ex-girlfriend, it’s hard to image a way out or how to improve your life. Not even a message delivered to him by a medium would prepare him for what would happen. After a painfully realistic description of the accident and the experience that took place after, Shine On goes on with the effects, changes and challenges they provoked. This man would never be the same, not after discovering he could write classical music and paint with ease with no previous training on either area. This book made me feel more hopeful than others about what we will encounter when we depart. Of course very experience is different, and I’m inclined to think that each person gets the easiest to process and understand for them, but the message is undeniable: no matter what, only love will follow and only love we will find. Being severely dyslexic, David Ditchfield teamed-up with J.S. Jones, PhD in order to have his story told, and it reads so fluently and easily it captures all the emotions and thoughts we would expect to experience. Jones also included short interviews at the end of the book with some of the most relevant people in David’s life, explaining their point of view in this event and its effects. As a magical journey toward the unknown, Shine On gave me hope in these maddening times. It is a testament on why we should always expect the best, no matter how gloom the future seems to be, while also teaching about the healing properties of art. I’m sure this story would have been different without it. ~ Patheos, Review
Shine On is an incredible tale of one man’s NDE, or Near Death Experience, and how it changes his life forever. The author David Ditchfield was dragged under a train in a freak accident in 2006. After his NDE, he discovered new abilities such as composing music (which he cannot read or write music) and painting detailed images of what he saw and experienced on the other side. The author describes the time leading up to the accident and what he saw after. The book is well written like you are experiencing everything the character sees and hears. While the story sounds like fiction, it is a real account of what happened. He recalls the details of having being injured after dragged under the train and being at the hospital. At one point that world fades and he wakes in a colorful and calm place with beings who assure him he is safe and loved. He finds his body is whole and uninjured. This location feels peaceful and he wants to stay forever in this perfect place even if it means he is dead. What he sees next is incredible. A rotating tunnel of color and light that feels of pure and unconditional love is seen. He then describes what he saw when he looked over the side of the table he was on. He could see a cascading waterfall of galaxies, entire universes, whole dimensions. He says that the love he feels is coming from the light itself. Then all of a sudden he was thrust back to his hospital room. The author then explains he feels he was sent back to share his experiences and show people what the other world is like. He feels he must paint what he has seen. He is able to paint images beyond the artistic ability he had prior. These painting can be viewed on his website at www.shineonthestory.com. The author continues his journey and we find out he also composes music. He has never been able to read or write a single not of music notation and yet he composes classical symphonies. (These musical compositions can also be heard on the website). David’s NDE or Near Death Experience, the story is incredible and full of hope. He gives the reader a clear view of what may await us all on the other side. This is a beautiful book and recommended for anyone curious about or experienced a near-death experience themselves. ~review by Amber Barnes Author: David Ditchfield and J.S. Within, I found passages so meaningful and moving that I had to pause and reflect deeply, sometimes to shed a tear. I feel such gratitude for David's willingness to share his lows and foibles with stunning pure honesty, to let us see deep into his life. .........Ditchfield does a fantastic job illustrating the hopeless despair he felt prior to the accident.........And then... 'After' his NDE... to avoid spoilers, all I will say is that inspiration and drive like that - to create art and music with no training or classes or even instructional youtube videos.... to be able to take something you see in your mind's eye (or hear) and to translate that to something tangible... that takes something beyond what we have here. Overall, a good read. ~ Jody Horvath (Reviewer), NetGalley
5.0 out of 5 stars The Dove on the Stone Ledge Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 August 2020 Verified Purchase This is what is called 'An Instant Classic' - it reads like a beautifully orchestrated novel full of rich symbolism, as, for example, with the inspired orchestral piece at the climax itself. That constitutes a very touching denouement, neatly tying all the ends David Ditchfield had found his ideal amenuensis in J.S.Jones PhD, and the 'peak spiritual experience' is also grounded in often harsh reality. Every character has a separate, distinct but harmonious role in the whole, as with the Spiritualist Healer Joy and the wisely cautious Clinical Psychotherapist Irene. 5.0 out of 5 stars Reading This Book is Like Going on a Journey Reviewed in the United States on July 19, 2020 Verified Purchase This story is deeply moving. When I got halfway through the book, I set it down for the first time since opening the cover; only because I wanted to slow down the experience. David tells his story in such a way that it feels like I'm there with him in the days and months leading up to his Near Death Experience. When he recounts the details of the accident, he speaks of a feeling of "splitting in two", almost like two opposite experiences happening at the same time. He does an amazing job of making that sensation real for the reader. His words pull you right in there with him in those terrifying, confusing, and somehow beautiful moments. While I've had an interest in the mysteries surrounding our existence, I haven't been drawn to stories specifically about NDEs until I heard about Shine On; and reading it has changed me in some subtle and yet profound way. Shine On is David's story. But he tells it so well that it feels like my own story. Like all of our stories. Which now that I've read it, I suspect that it is. ~ Day Howell, Amazon.com

5.0 out of 5 stars Honest and compelling story Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 July 2020 Verified Purchase This is such an interesting book. I had no prior knowledge of NDEs and the writer's personal journey and account of his terrible accident at such a low point of his life was a painful read, but as I read on I realised it was an essential part of his story. It felt human, painful and very honest - but with some dry humour and a lightness of touch in between. The different timelines and back story that built up to his harrowing accident were effective literary tools. The resulting and vivid recapture of his NDE in the emergency room is beautifully captured and this sensitively written book makes one reflect on new possibilities of life after death. Should we chose to listen, the story gives us a clear message that we should not be fearful. Life is arguably the harder option, especially how we chose to live it in the 'here and now' as is the aspiration to leave a meaningful mark behind. Defining what a meaningful life is for someone in deep pain as a result of addiction is also dissected in the book and done through excerpts of his intimate psychotherapy sessions. As David continues his personal journey - (post profound physical injuries PTSD and lingering personal demons), these sessions are both visceral and insightful. They help us empathise in a non judgemental way as he reaches a place of peace and recovery - heightened by his extraordinary call to spiritual creativity through his art and music .This true sense of self and artistic epiphany is realised when David and many of those around him recognise his special and arguably higher abilities. We are all relieved when he gets to a good place and are uplifted as a result. Whatever our belief systems, we can all afford to take time out to read this truly spiritual gift of a story and reflect upon our own lives. Or, perhaps just listen to those quiet subliminal/ higher voices that draw us to our inner selves and help make life and love sing. ~ S J Everett, Amazon.co.uk
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars. An amazing story of how falling under a train and surviving changed David’ Ditchfield’s life. While David was in the hospital after the accident he experienced an after life encounter, where unconditional love appeared. An unexplainable phenomenon. David continued to remember every detail of his experience. Although one of his arms was shattered and he needed numerous operations, he was determined to draw what he had experienced whilst unconscious and near death. And later to paint it. An excellent autobiography, one you won’t want to miss. ~ Margaret Wilkins (Reviewer), NetGalley

The extraordinary subject was tucked into the narrative of David’s life, before, during and after his transformative experience. It is clear from his story that David was not one to open up to people with ease so I really appreciated his generosity and honesty in telling the story in the context of his life. I think there are many points at which people will be able to identify with the doubts and uncertainty he experienced in his life and maybe get a sense that transformation is possible (even without falling under a train). The straight forward manner in which David tells the story makes acceptance of his near death experience, the transformative effect it had on his life and his calm and accepting view of death compelling and real. It gives an extraordinary insight into an area of NDE which is rarely explored - the gifts that people can bring back with them from the afterlife. I'd heard about this phenomenon, but never read about it in such detail as in this wonderful book. It's also an intimate and heartwarming account of one man's struggle against adversity and his victory against all the odds. With its message of hope and love, it really is a book for our times. ~ Cool White Bear, Amazon.co.uk
5.0 out of 5 stars A great and transformative read Reviewed in Canada on June 29, 2020 Verified Purchase I just finished reading this extraordinary story about David Ditchfield’s NDE. I was kept in suspense throughout the book and managed to finish it over two days. « Shine On » is extremely well written and describes the author’s experience after his NDE so vividly, that we feel we are present with him and want to cheer him on during his healing life journey. His courage and determination to change his life for the better and to want to tell his story to the world, is inspiring. The synchronicity in his life after his near death experience is amazing and enlightening and it gives hope to know that we are all connected, deeply loved unconditionally and guided by a higher force. I liked this book because it is a great story about transformation, courage and embracing the fullness of one’s life. ~ Isha, Amazon.ca
5.0 out of 5 stars The Experience Changed His Life Reviewed in Canada on June 28, 2020 Verified Purchase It entices you from the onset by revealing the events leading up to his near death experience. I love when a book does that. Reading the moments before David gets dragged under the train was horrifyingly distressing, but it captivates you immediately. The experience itself is spell-binding, and is definitely worth reading. But if you're purchasing this book for the sole purpose of reading pages upon pages of details regarding David's near-death experience, this book is not for you. Why? Because you will not find that here. This book outlines the life and thought-processes of a man who was one way, had a profound near death experience, then changed for the better with the added benefit of incredible artistic abilities in painting and music. This is not just a near-death experience story; these are the details of a man's life that has been profoundly impacted. ~ Reader, Amazon.ca
5.0 out of 5 stars Incredibly moving account of a near death experience. Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 June 2020 Verified Purchase This is the best book i have read in a very long time, maximum kudos to the authors. It recounts the story of David who was pulled under a moving train, suffering horrendous injuries, the near death experience he had whilst on the operating table, and his amazing new found talents afterwards. Once I started reading, I did not want to put the book down, something I find rare these days. The writing is so powerful, a whole range of emotions were released. In turn the story made me cringe, laugh and weep, but overall gave me an incredible sense of joy at what David experienced and the way it has helped him to turn his life around, it is really life affirming. I wholeheartedly recommend reading this book, it has left me wanting more, and I will be searching for David's Art and Music. Fantastic read ~ Jackster, Amazon.co.uk
5.0 out of 5 stars An INCREDIBLE true story. Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 June 2020 Verified Purchase It's a true story like no other, because David is a regular person with his faults like any of us, we identify with him, we recognise this person. Then bang! his life changes... this is when you don't want to stop reading! OMG it's brilliant and so thought provoking to say the least! Book No.2 please, I want to know how Davids story progresses. ~ Amazon Verified Customer, Amazon.co.uk
5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring Verified Purchase Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 June 2020 I would like to thank the author, the publisher and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read an ARC of this book. It is the story of the author’s life after a near death experience following an accident he was involved in. I found it very inspiring and uplifting. ~ Mrs C Newton, Amazon.co.uk
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars. I'd like to believe that there is an afterlife. This is the true account of the author's life after a near death experience. The accident should have killed him. We learn snippets of his life before the accident then how it changed his life forever. David Ditchfield tells us his experiences, warts and all. I've never heard before of people bringing back a talent after a near death experience. There's more about his life before the accident than after it, it does help to let us know exactly what his life was like beforehand. I'm still not sure what I believe after reading this book but I did enjoy reading all about it. ~ Louise Wilson (Reviewer) , NetGalley
A compelling and inspiring read about the author's experience with NDE, I would like to say that I enjoyed this book very much! ~ Christina Blake (Reviewer), NetGalley
Rating: 5 out of 5 stars. One of my first NetGalley reads and really enjoyed it! Beautiful book, well written, a great true story well told. ~
A really thought provoking read. From the vivid description of the accident all the way through to re-building his life, the author writes an in depth view of how his near death experience affected him. Incredibly intriguing. Definitely worth a read. ~ Helen Doroszkiewicz (Reviewer) , NetGalley
Across thousands of years, people have described one of the most astonishing of all human phenomena: the near-death experience (NDE), the subjective experience of an Afterlife, a place where we apparently survive death. The more powerful the NDE, the more profound the after-effects. The ambitious reset their priorities. Atheists change their values. Doctors rethink their beliefs. But what if the after effects of an NDE were undeniable? What if someone suddenly developed the ability to produce high-quality paintings of their NDE, a new-found skill that went far beyond the artistic ability they had before? And what if that same person then suddenly acquired the ability to compose classical symphonies after their NDE? And their symphonies were then premiered at sell-out orchestral concerts, even though, to this day, they are unable to read or write a single note of musical notation. Wouldn't this be proof that even a cynic would have a hard time explaining? After his NDE, this is exactly what happened to David. And this is his story. Fair warning, that the first chapter of the book can be a little intense for those of you with a more delicate disposition, honestly the first third or so of the book is a little intense! I will admit I am one of those folks who got a little wobbly with the reading of this - take care if you're an empath or are triggered by the reliving of difficult memories or mental health situations! This book was a very interesting, fast-paced read for me. The author's voice is compelling, to me it felt like a long conversation with a friend. The vocabulary casual although the topic anything but. This book will be for anyone who loves reading about NDE's, who wants a fascinating, true-story read. I believe this will be excellent summer reading for anyone who has an afternoon to devote to this fantastic book, or for someone who is looking for the "sign" that life will get better. David reminds me of the arrow - you have to be pulled back and the bow stretched to the limit before the arrow can go whirling full force into the future. ~ Triquetra Reviews, Review

Shine On is a delightful, engaging and highly readable true story of one man’s life-changing experience to the other side. Rating: 5 out of 5 stars. An interesting story of a young man who went to the other side and made it back to tell. I liked the build up to the actual near death experience. Mr Ditchfield explains his life as it builds to the point of the accident. Or was it an accident? After reading this book it seemed to me that he may have been meant to have this experience so He could tell the rest of us that death is just a door to another world. This story offers hope and healing to anyone facing death or the losing of a loved one. I read this book in one sitting as it is that interesting. I felt better also after reading as I recently lost someone dear to me. Thank you David for your story. ~ Patrick Carmen (Reviewer), NetGalley

A story full of feel-good factors for those who may suspect that they are looking for fulfilment in all the wrong places. Definitely a worthwhile and edifying read, even for those who…maybe sceptical of the near-death experience, but who can recognise how it might be capable of changing someone for the better. 4 out of 5 stars. ~ Lynda Stevens (Reviewer), NetGalley
Shine On is a quick and compelling read. Though the author's NDE is the centerpiece of the book, very few pages are devoted to his experience in the higher realms. Instead, the book takes us on David's journey of transformation, contrasting his life before the accident with the creativity, growth and evolution that came after. It's a satisfying narrative that reads a lot like a diary. ~ Tina Wright (Media), NetGalley

A wild, inspiring and unusual story, written in a captivating way…a good read and if you're into reading about soul-searching and life-changing events, you should read it. I cried at the part where David gets crushed under the train. I mean, I knew it was coming, that's what the whole book is about, and I knew he survives - but I cried, and it wasn't just a few tears (yeah, okay, I wept.) It was just so heart-breaking and terrifying. 4 out of 5 stars. ~ Evelina Avalinahs Books's review, NetGalley / GoodReads
Shine on is one of the most gripping accounts of a near-death experience that I have read. And I say that having interviewed, since 1965, thousands of people who described such experiences. David's story also evokes...a primal horror of being dragged under and run over by a train. I still remember the chill that went down my spine... ~ Dr Raymond A Moody, Jr, Physician, psychologist and philosopher, who coined the term near-death experience in Life After Life, sold 14 million copies
Wonderful...Shine On is a fascinating account of an extraordinary experience and I recommend everyone read this book to understand the true importance and power of NDEs. ~ Dr Penny Sartori, Author of The Wisdom of Near-Death Experiences
On David's hour-long Apple Radio special presented by artist, St Vincent: '...very gripping radio, I remember listening to him on that show and I couldn't turn it off at all. I was really drawn into his description of his experience...you could hear it in his voice.' ~ Zane Lowe, Apple's Beats 1 radio station

Amazing, amazing, beautiful book. I absolutely loved it. David’s miraculous and moving story reads like a novel that brings you to tears.
