Steve Taylor believes there to be a powerful connection between poetry and spiritual awakening. Speaking of Wordsworth, Blake and D.H. Lawrence, amongst countless others, many poets have used poetry to convey the insights and visions that came from their awakening experiences. It emerges from them as naturally as vegetation emerges from the soil. Everyday language belongs to everyday consciousness. Since we have a strongly linear sense of time, and our thoughts are often focused on the past and the future, ordinary language is split into tenses, and is full of terms referring to the future and the past. As a result, it can be difficult to describe awakening experiences in ordinary languages. But poetry isn’t bound by the normal constraints of language. It doesn’t have to convey meaning directly, but can just suggest it, through allusion, image and metaphor. It can create a real communication of being, an exchange of feeling. This is what Taylor has tried to do in his poetry. In this, his latest collections of poems he hopes they manage to transmit some of the insights and visions of his awakening experiences onto you. ~ Mind Body Spirit’ (Issue 36/Winter 2013-14)
Insightful and delightful, Steven Taylor s poems are like a beautiful mist of champagne bubbles on a background of infinite space and silence. ~ Catherine Ingram , author of In the Footsteps of Gandhi, Passionate Presence, and A Crack in Everything
There is a strong tradition of poets (including Whitman and Hopkins, Lawrence and Hughes) whose primary concern is to attempt to re-establish contact with the cosmos, and openness to its plenitude of miracles…Steve Taylors poems are in direct descent from that tradition, at a time when it is needed more than ever. ~ Keith Sagar, literary critic, author of The Art of Ted Hughes and the Art of D.H. Lawrence.
