Geoff Thompson was sexually abused at the tender age of 11 by a trusted and beloved teacher. By the time he was 30 years old he was unconsciously displacing his rage into violence, sexual self-harm and long bouts of debilitating depression. After failing to find a solution to his burgeoning mania in all the conventional places, he set off on a Campbellian quest to find the answers for himself: about abuse, about the aftermath of abuse, about the true meaning of forgiveness, its metaphysical power, and how it is possible to heal, no matter how deep or how old the wound. The author assures us that "there is treasure in the ruins", "there can be profit in sorrow and in suffering", and, with a few tried and tested, honest techniques and a heavy supply of courage, victims can reclaim their lives, they can win love and they can find healing and inspiration, post-abuse.
In this deeply empirical study, Thompson reveals the true definition and the awesome power of forgiveness, clearly defining the difference between forgiving someone and letting them off. He demonstrates the power and freedom of "giving it over"; the revealed health benefits of releasing anger, dissonance and resentment; the hidden power of reciprocity; avoiding the hate trap; the healing power of love and compassion; the liberating practice of personal repentance; and discovering "the world to come" - the exhilarating expansion we experience when ignorance is dissolved with qualified knowledge.
"I told my story very late", Thompson tells us, "and suffered needlessly as a consequence; I'm hoping that 99 Reasons to Forgive will encourage others to share their story sooner, be inspired by my living example of powerful healing, and embrace their walking wounds as beauty scars, the rich tapestry of personal survival".

This is a highly personal book about how to heal from trauma by forgiving the perpetrator. In this case, the man who sexually assaulted him. The path to healing doesn’t mean that forgiving doesn’t mean forgetting or giving someone a free pass. Beyond the solid advice and personal anecdotes, I found a lot of metaphysical quotes and religious references. That’s where the author lost me. But this book will really resonate with anyone who has been abused. There are powerful messages of healing, and those suggestions could really help. This wasn’t a fun read, but it is a fascinating way to look at a serious subject ~ Advice Sisters, Review
A book where, from the off, author Geoff Thompson freely admits he knows your pain, moreover feels your pain, and in thanking the reader for having picked up his book, for having given over their hard-earned monies, goes on to suggests that as they read further, that forgiveness might well just be the remedy to what ails them. Furthermore, he proposes that forgiveness is a panacea, not only for the problems that currently entangle us, but it might also be the key to unlocking many more of our pressing miseries. Asking why we should listen to him, the author, in the first place, responds because he suffers also and because he cares enough to bleed his suffering into the ink on these very same pages. For like everyone on this planet, he too has had his moments, his days, his weeks, his months, sometimes years of insufferable, lonely, lonely torment and thus, as he himself admits, I know what it is to suffer. In closing, and having spent a career trying to unlock the mysteries of forgiveness, attempting to excavate and unpick how people make peace with their demons and find compassion for those who have hurt them, as noted by Marina Cantacuzino (founder of The Forgiveness Project), Thompson’s book also goes to great pains not to present forgiveness as an imperative, thus stressing the greyness of this most oblique of subjects. For within the nuance, complexity and uncertainty, he hopes people might find their own clarity within these pages. ~ Exclusive Magazine
99 Reasons to forgive by Geoff Thompson A review I had the honour to read an advanced copy of the book. I was excited. The book was a great read. Providing many insights through the vehicle of stories. Each story is followed by Budo practice, a way to apply the information learned in the chapter. These budo practices are really practicable and applicable in daily life and when reading you feel encouraged to try. With each read I felt other depths were revealed to me. Geoff is a great storyteller and has the gift of explaining complicated things in a very understandable way. Budo often associated with martial arts and the samurai is all about facing challenges head on, about courage and determination. It’s also about truth…. And that’s what this book is full of. What I also love about Geoff is that he always writes from his own experience not from some theory or beliefs. Knowing Geoff personally I know his story and I also was around during the unfolding of some of the stories told in the book. The information in the book was hard earned in the blasting furnace of his personal life. He had to make it work for him like he had to make his martial arts work for him on the door. Although my favourite chapters or reasons were the three last ones. I also loved the first one and know. they are all important. This books is full of information that might lead to liberation if you apply! Or at least try as I know it’s not always easy. Expect resistance but stay with it. Reading the book is an experience, a journey… applying it an adventure, all to undertake and certainly not to miss. Highly recommended. Nick Engelen ~ Nick Engelen, diect fromthe review
99 Reasons to Forgive - and Revenge Ain't One Allen Carr was a master when it came to dismantling the psychological dependency cigarette smokers had to their 'addiction'. It occurs to me - as I am reading 99 Reasons to Forgive - that Geoff Thompson, from the same truth and understanding of the core of the 'problem' has uncovered a comparable 'master degree' when it comes to dismantling people's addiction to their own 'pain body' - and shining a divine light of compassion on the notion of forgiveness...not least as the escape from a shadow's torment. I believe the author's own journey and pain have provided the framework of a system that might stand any test: even beyond its author's efficacy. Thank you for the beautiful gift of this book and its content. Kaspa Hazlewood Author of Dorian Yates: from the Shadow (official biography) ~ Kaspa Hazlewood, Author
'99 Reasons to Forgive' provides us with the guidance and support to embrace the healing power of letting go. Geoff's writing beautifully carries essence and compassion alongside a truth and wisdom that can only come from having truly lived and embodied his message. In a society so often obsessed with achievement and ascension Geoff provides an invitation to descend, going down into our wounds where we can find the magic of forgiveness and love. This book will nourish something deep within its readers and provide hope in times of suffering. I am always grateful for Geoff's work which inspires me to live with more compassion, truth and love. ~ Pat Divilly, Podcaster and #1 Best Selling Author
A deep and insightful guide to forgiving and finding freedom. ~ Etan Ilfeld
What Geoff Thompson brings to this book is so much more than his wisdom - which is broad and far reaching - he also brings himself. In bringing himself he gives the reader his hard-won compassion towards the human condition; our inner condition. Where we have been wronged and are the victim of injustice Geoff speaks to the self within, beyond our ego and offers his knowledge of how we can set ourselves free. His personal knowledge of unconditional love is the authority with which he speaks and his voice of love reaches deep into the darkest recesses of our psyche and whispers, 'First you must love yourself.' This is the place where forgiveness begins and this book will set you free to forgive yourself and break the cycle of revenge towards others that holds you in it's grip. ~ Colm Holland, author of 'The Secret of the Alchemist'
Geoff Thompson encourages us all to become brave hearts on our life journey and to look within for the courage and wisdom we urgently need not just to forgive others but most important of all to forgive ourselves. An empowering and truly liberating read from a remarkable and resilient thought leader and spiritual pioneer that I can’t recommend highly enough. ~ Theresa Cheung, Sunday Times bestselling dreams and mystical author
