Synopsis

Gabriel Morris experienced a lifetime or two of travel in one decade, from 1990-2000. In Following My Thumb: A Decade of Unabashed Wanderlust he recounts his amazing journeys, from backpacking around Europe at the age of eighteen to five months in India, and much more. His travels take him not only to exotic places abroad, but deep inside his own country of the United States, as he hitchhikes through Alaska, visits music festivals and Rainbow Gatherings, lives on farms, gets mixed up with a strange cult, lives for several months in the Hawaiian rainforest, gets involved in logging protests in the California redwoods, and falls in love with a fellow wandering hitchhiker. Morris takes the reader inside the real experiences of a budget traveler and the traveler's subculture, as well as weaves in his spiritual journey as he encounters a range of remarkable experiences, from intense challenges to hilarious incidents to befriending colorful characters. Throughout it all is a common theme: if you follow your thumb, your gut, your heart, then things will surely be interesting and probably enlightening too.
