I literally couldn’t put this book down, I became completely immersed in the somewhat dysfunctional lives of the characters. The end twisted and turned for me and I found myself reeling along with the characters, often finding myself gasping and open mouthed. Five stars. ~ Lea, Amazon
Beat The Rain is simply a beautifully written book and I think I might have found the 21st century Thomas Hardy. This novel is written with the same kind of character introspection and flaws that you’d find in Tess or Jude. I loved it. It is a very powerful read about two pretty dysfunctional protagonists, Louise and Adam and their relationship. It articulates how easily a relationship can fall apart if communication fails: very thought provoking. I can’t say that any of the characters are particularly likeable being so utterly self-absorbed but you really get into their psyche through the excellent writing. Five stars - I simply loved this book. I'm a very hard to please reader, I lose interest quickly and my attention span is appalling but this had me from the first chapter and stayed with me until I could bury myself in it again. It's beautifully written, and is about life and love and mistakes. The characters are compelling yet flawed. A wonderful read, compelling, heartbreaking and at times uncomfortable to read, as the author digs deep into the failings and psyches of his two main characters. It is in some way, a cautionary tale on the choices we make and the lives we lead, Beat the Rain is a psychological drama rather than a thriller, which has you hooked the further into the book you read, combing a page-turning plot with brilliant characterisation and raw emotion. I could barely put it down by the time I was half way through, and by the end was pretty wrung out. Nigel Jay Cooper is undoubtedly a name to watch if his debut is anything to go by. Fantastic book - 5 stars. Well, what can I say? I received this book this morning and have completely read it. Unable to put it down once I put my children to bed. It completely had me riveted what an amazing achievement for a first book. Stays with you after reading. These days I can find it particularly difficult to read, to focus. I'll open a book and my phone will go off andi'lll give up. Finished the book yesterday. I want to read it again! I can't say that about most books. I was surprised at the accuracy of writing about a woman's thoughts and feelings as a man, it was very well captured. The story was simple yet portrayed very complex issues and the writing was both raw yet beautiful and gave great depth to the characters. Such a powerful story that I couldn't put down - so much so that I missed my train stop! The inner emotional histories, guilts and desires of the characters are all stripped back and lain naked for the reader to love, hate, or sometimes relate to. While the characters are ordinary people, the writing is extraordinary, and I was gripped from start to finish. Ever since I finished reading 'A Little Life', I've been trying to find something as memorable, and this has done it for me. I had no idea what to expect... "psychological" to me tends to bring to mind a thriller or something that has you on the edge of the seat. This did not to that. That, however is not a bad thing. What it does look at is the being that is "human psychology" how and why we behave how we do. The main character, Louise, has seen and done it all ... suffering from abandonment at an early age from her mother and used to being the apple of her father's eye ... adult life has something to live up to. However the security she thought she had always craved becomes boring and dull and unknowingly she seems intent to destroy it all only realising when it is too late what she has done. In some ways there are elements that will make the reader uncomfortable knowing that they have behaved exactly like that. The characters are skillfully drawn and there are a few twists and turns that are unexpected. The only thing that really bugged me was the brief encounter with the Jackie O character ... could not see the point in that ... You can see from the synopsis what the gist of the story is however I was not expecting what I read. We are sitting in the Psychological Thriller genre with this book and I was very much right there with the characters as I read it. Firstly, I want to point out that this is the debut novel by Nigel Jay Cooper and I was blown away! This is the second debut novel that I have reviewed and both were amazing and both very different. "A 5 huge stars for this rollercoaster ride." It says so much about a book when I read it in one sitting- something I have never done before. Staying awake well beyond my normal time desperate to keep my eyes open to complete this. It grabbed me, pulled me in and I couldn’t put it down. This is a very well written book. The characters, especially Louise totally come to life in front of your eyes. Whilst some might not understand some of her actions and thoughts, others will go “yup- I could/might have done that”. It is the proverbial emotional roller coaster. The dinner party made me smile (we all have had a friend like that- right? Note the “had”). Some parts made me cringe – Imogen especially. Both sides of the story are portrayed well and yes there always two sides to that old coin but we don’t always appreciate the reverse. A male view can be so surprising to a female. (Think of man flu!). There are twists and turns not least of all towards the end. I won’t spoil anything but one certainly took me by surprise. The ending? You will have to read this to find out for yourself but endings are a big thing for me and can make the difference between 4* and 5*, enough to say that it leaves you on a cliff edge and completes the story. Not a light read for the emotional. However a thoroughly, totally un-put-down-able book. A stunning debut- thank you Nigel, very much appreciated. Beat the Rain was a fabulous story of a marriage in decline and the secrets and lies we put in motion to get through. It’s billed as a psychological thriller but I don’t think that’s accurate. It’s more a domestic tale with a few twists. Either way, it’s a great debut novel for Mr. Cooper. Louise’s boyfriend, Tom, dies suddenly and leaves a video telling her to move on with her life and how his twin brother, Adam, might help her with that. They can help each other. Adam has been in love with Louise and through their grief over Tom, they get married. Years later, Louise is struggling and she meets a man named Jarvis, who changes their whole world – for good or bad? Told in a flashback/non-linear fashion that does NOT distract from the overall narrative but adds to it, Beat the Rain is a excellent story well told and fabulously crafted. Go read it!! Wow. This is an extraordinary book. An incredible achievement for a first novel. I was totally absorbed by it, and read it in record time for me. I couldn't put it down. The plot twists and turns with a strong sense of impending doom. The characters spring off the page alive (or at least, living), and the setting in Brighton is portrayed to perfection. Really enjoyed reading "Beat the Rain" by Nigel Jay Cooper. He is a natural writer and the story flowed as it unravelled the characters and their complex lives filled with emotions such as love,loss,hope,rejection and despair. The story itself is deep and emotional with unusual twists and turns which kept me captivated throughout the book. This is a surprising book on many levels. The plot and characters are both well crafted, and in unexpected ways. It is a love story about dysfunctional people, but again in a fresh and interesting take. Cooper can write both male and female characters and project their inner thoughts equally well. The roles portrayed here are against type, which makes you examine your own suppositions and prejudices. It is a dark and tormented tale, but you find yourself drawn in, slowly and then quickly. Much like passing a highway accident, you want to know more about why, when, and how it all happened. If you like novels about likable people, this isn't for you. No one in this book is without some faults, some quite big ones. But if you have been in a failed relationship, much of this book will ring true. You may not want to relive your own relationship, but Cooper has recreated a well-built model that is worth looking at from many different points of view. Ultimately, I ended up re-reading this book after six months, and enjoyed it more, being able to absorb the numerous plot twists and concentrate on what he was trying to do. This book is well worth the read. The characters are very easy to identify with and the story flows and gets you totally absorbed. Louise is happily married to Tom and then tragedy strikes. She gets involved with Tom's twin brother Adam and they are fine for a while until someone else enters their lives. Then the story takes a dramatic, unexpected turn and one I was not expecting. It is refreshing to read a novel by a new author that does not write in an overly descriptive manner but has a refreshingly pared back style which is reminiscent of Haruki Murakami's work. Nigel Jay Cooper (NJC) effectively draws readers into the tangled emotional web of characters Louise, Adam and Jarvis. Without giving too much away, NJC clearly has an understanding of the effects that grief and bereavement have on people and how these circumstances can influence their subsequent actions. I found this book totally absorbing. It tells the story of a couple whose relationship gradually unravels and eventually completely falls apart, in part through a lack of communication. Nigel's storytelling had me engaged from the start and I really felt for all of the characters. I look forward to reading his second book. This was a great book - lots of intrigue, great character exploration. The story is written in two viewpoints - Louise and Adam. Louise is a young woman with a sad family history - abandoned by her mom and then her dad died. She meets and falls in love with Tom, who also passes away. Enter Adam, Tom's twin brother. They get together, both trying to fill a need left by so much loss and grief. But those are deep holes and therein lies the story. Are they enough for each other? Can they make it work? What I really loved about this book was the writing - there were so many beautiful phrases that just made you stop and take notice. And possibly apply them to your own life - be present, listen, don't take things for granted. First of all, let me say that I would give this book 6 stars if I could! It touched me in ways I can't even explain and it changed me (how, I'm not sure) for the better. When Louise marries her dead husband's twin brother, Adam, we may think we can guess how the story will unfold. But we can't possibly see the outcomes that await! It's told in beautiful prose and explores so many issues: grief, love, guilt, sorrow, desire....all the while examining what it means to be a human with all the flaws with which we are born or maybe acquire. It gives us many insights into the rich tapestry of marriage and how it can ebb and flow. It is at one both breathtaking and heartbreaking. This is a novel that will stay with me for a long time. I would recommend this book highly, and look forward to seeing more of the author's work in future. I was invested in these characters from the very beginning; the pacing was good and dialogue well written. You are really able to put yourself in the shoes of Louise, Tom, and Adam straight from the opening pages. What follows is an emotional rollercoaster as you follow what seems to be quite ordinary life. About halfway through the book I realised this psychological thriller was not all that it seemed, and by the time certain truths are revealed I knew that this was a book unlike any I've read for quite a long time. I think what makes this story so compelling is how skillfully the author has realised his protagonists. The problems they face are problems that many of us face, every single day. Whilst their responses are sometimes fantastical, for the most part I could feel a terrible lot of empathy for each one. Adam, who has lost someone close to him, struggling with self identity and self medicating substance abuse. Louise, dealing with a tricky childhood and her own loss plus the restlessness that can come from long term established relationships and motherhood. Even the secondary characters here are fun, because who of us doesn't have an awful Imogen hanging around? For a debut, I thought this was a really solid work of fiction. Occasionally there were some oversights in editing that let the writing down, such as recycled passages or words. I think that it would be a wonderful title to assign a class to show gender fluidity in a compelling, visceral way. The characters are complex and very believable; almost anyone who is partnered will identify with the marital fight scenes! I don't remember the last time I read a book in two sittings. It was only because I had an urgent thing to do that I didn't read it all in one go. It's a story about people who are like people you know, with all the same hangups, lack of communication, irritating and lovable habits. Compelling and compulsive. Sometimes you can't beat the rain, you just have to get wet, and if you won't communicate, then everyone around you gets soaked too. There are already so many rave reviews for 'Beat the Rain' that it is difficult to find anything new to say, however I enjoyed this book so enormously that I want to add a few thoughts. First, on the cover the book is described as a psychological thriller - this description nearly put me off reading it as I don't like being frightened. But it isn't frightening, not like the terrifying film, 'Sleeping with the Enemy' for example. Not at all. It is a tense and intensely emotional portrayal of the deep-rooted insecurities vested in a child's psyche by the sense of it not being worthy of being loved. Beat the Rain is a beautifully and compellingly written novel about the relationships of ordinary people - the sort of people we all know, or may think we know, but having read this book, do we? Cooper delves very deep into the psyches of his characters, and in so doing lays bare their innermost thoughts and unexpressed emotions exposing their every flaw and wrinkle. His observations of human frailties are so painfully honest I felt almost uncomfortable for some of the characters, in particular the ones who, through an inability to communicate, seem unable to beat the rain and are on course to get very wet indeed. Through Cooper's skilful depiction of his main characters you may think you know them pretty well, but just when you think you can guess what they'll do next, there is a twist as surprising as it is unexpected. This debut novel by Nigel Jay Cooper is absolutely lovely and haunting. It’s a rare combination of page-turning psychological suspense and beautiful language. Beat the Rain opens with the death of Tom, twin brother of Adam and partner of Louise. Tom’s death was unexpected by everyone except Tom himself, so the main characters are both left untethered by loss. They marry, and life proceeds as normal, until it doesn’t. Narration alternates (mostly) between Louise and Adam, and I found Adam to be the more vividly-realized character. His voice is the more introspective, vulnerable, and thus more sympathetic. Cooper’s use of language is mesmerizing, piercing and true. Pondering the functional alcoholic: “Functioning. Such a good word. So descriptive of their lives . . . So descriptive of a lot of people’s lives, he imagines. Functioning. All the moving parts doing what they should but nothing going on behind the scenes, no sparks, no real life.” And this little gem about small talk: “Maybe Adam had been hard on the woman, she’d probably only been making conversation. Except conversation is always laden with meaning and hidden truths and politics.” Beat the Rain is full of those hidden truths, small jewels that together create the mosaic of human experience, but an experience that is made beautiful by broken things. This debut novel is so compelling and well-written - each element of the story is strategically placed. In fact, it’s one of the best novels of its kind that I have read in quite a long time. I didn't know quite what to expect from the title or the cover but I was hooked from the start and I found it hard to put this book down. The author writes beautifully, his language is so articulate and descritptive, his observations really clever however it is not unneccessarily wordy-no fluff here. Cooper throws you right in from the start. I thought I was reading a very sad tale about a slighlty disfunctional couple however I was totally wrong. Every page feels like something totally unexpected happens and slaps you right in the face! Wow, I did not see that coming at all................or that...................or that! There is a twist around every corner. I did want to scream at some of the characters! I felt like I knew them all and wished I could help them get out of their spiraling mess. Nigel Jay Cooper's ability to crawl inside these characters and examine the complexities of their tragic, deceptive and sometimes banal lives with such delicacy, humour and, dare I say it, authenticity, demonstrates a keen understanding of human frailty, in all it's guises. I'm frustrated by them and care deeply about them, I find myself calling out; I wish they could hear me plead with them. These people could be my neighbours, they could be my friends... Perhaps that's why Beat The Rain is so bloody captivating, there is so much resonance, we've all made these mistakes, and we see ourselves in the story, we hear ourselves in the exchanges; this stuff really gets under your skin, because it's so recognisable. This is the kind of novel that invites us to be intrigued about relationships and opens our eyes to the mysteries of human connection. Beat the Rain is a thoroughly compelling read! The fluid writing style and intriguing storyline make this an easy book to digest in one sitting. Covering some very powerful subjects and delving deep into the human psyche, this is a sometimes dark read, but balanced nicely by a subtle level of humour. Whilst some of the characters are not altogether likeable and some of their actions questionable, the complexity of their situations and personalities mean it's more than them simply being unpleasant or selfish. Not from the cover, and not from the synopsis. I've read a few psychological thrillers recently and before too long they all blur into one. Similar story line and similar characters, so I had put off reading this one because I was becoming a bit bored of the genre in general. But I wouldn't class Beat The Rain as a psychological thriller at all. I don't know what I would class it as if I'm being honest. It doesn't really fall into one category but it is a masterpiece in whatever genre you want to place it. The characters are laid bare for the reader, they are so authentic and honest. I felt a connection with each of them which made the book all the more heart wrenching. After a few chapters it felt like I was reading about friends I knew were headed straight for a train wreck and I couldn't stop it. Nor could I stop reading. I had Jarvis figured out quite early on, well - the part that Adam learned about him, not the bit Louise learned - that was a big shocker! And I figured out the interlude a few chapters before the end. But again, that just made it harder, because I was watching B this slow rumble of an earthquake that I knew was going to tear everyone apart, I was only a spectator. In terms of the writing, how beautiful. Some of the passages in this book are the type of thing you see on a huge canvas on people's walls. Nigel Jay Cooper is such a talented writer and uses his secret power (those amazing, psychological passages) sparingly. Which means that you aren't being overwhelmed with metaphors and "flowery language" for the entire book (which then loses its beauty). Instead you get to read a book in plain English, and every once in a while the beauty of the writing just comes out of the page and wraps itself around you. That was one of the highlights for me. As for the general story line. What can I say? Read it. It's gripping, and normal, and you can't put it down. What a fantastic book that reminds you that sometimes you ARE going to get wet. After starting off slow and already deciding I wasn’t enjoying this book Cooper managed to captivate me and pull me back into the story line. Louise and Adam’s lives seem almost predictable at first, after subconsciously filling in the rest of the plot line the shocks and surprises which Cooper writes were a pleasant surprise. The main, and arguably the most shocking part of the book made me put it down for a few minutes just to process what had just happened. Cooper’s writing to lead up to these twists were fantastic and I can’t wait to read another book by him. The main characters had happily switched their domestic roles, to Adam being the loving stay-at-home parent and Louise being the wage-earner in the household. This dynamic lead to Louise feeling like the odd one out within her family which then leads to meeting Jarvis. Although all 3 of these characters have very likable qualities, Cooper also ensures enough depth to show their flaws as well, and so the connection to them really enabled me to sympathize for them. I wouldn’t read this if you enjoy happy endings, although I found the ending to be eerily satisfying in relation to the story. Beat the Rain is Nigel Jay Cooper's debut novel, and what an auspicious start to what will be an undoubtedly successful writing career. It's hard to say exactly what this book is about without giving too much away, so--read the book synopsis for plot details and I will share with you some of the great writing that's in this book. There's this: "Perhaps that’s how all relationships end, not with a bang but with the accumulation of millions of tiny moments that matter, going unnoticed by one partner or the other because life gets in the way. And then one day you both stop trying to make the other one notice anymore. And that’s it, the slow death is in motion. The rest is entropy." And this: "I can see things with such clarity now, such useless, blinding clarity. But what’s the point in that now? Knowledge isn’t always powerful. Sometimes, it’s just heart-breaking." And this: "I am my own narrator. Memory is an artist, an impressionist. She adds colour, sound, smell and emotion to events at her whim. She adds, subtracts and embellishes until the event she started documenting is quite unrecognisable to the others who also experienced it, but at the same time, is more truthful to the owner of the memory. The only problem I had with the book is that sometimes I felt that the characters did things for no good reason, they were unrealistic and just didn't make sense. I would love to use something better than this worn-out cliché, but I'm tired today because of this book. So here goes, this really was an "emotional rollercoaster". One moment I was thinking things are picking up for the protagonists, perhaps this won't all go down the drain, the next moment it felt like I was being crushed, despairing, at the bleak bottom. And then there would be these really humorous scenes. That dinner party was hilarious. Beat The Rain is the story of a relationship that is gradually degenerating. Told from Louise's and Adam's perspectives, we learn right at the start that Louise's boyfriend, Tom, has died. Tom was Adam's twin brother. Louise and Adam get married. Not a spoiler, it's in the book's blurb. No further summary from me because the rest you will enjoy much more if you start reading this without knowing too much. 'Enjoy' may actually be the wrong word. This isn't the light reading you want to pick up for leisurely days on a sun lounger. In fact, if you're feeling sad or discontent with life, this may not be the best book to pick up at that moment. Also, if you need likable characters, forget it. Now I'm making this sound as if I wouldn't recommend this book. Not at all. This book is going to stay with me. The amazing thing is when I started this, I was expecting to read something different. To be honest, there were moments in the first half of the book when I thought about throwing in the towel and moving on. But this is a book you need to stick with. By the time Jarvis was introduced, about halfway through the book, I knew I couldn't put it down. Hence, feeling slightly tired today. This is a wonderfully insightful look at relationships covering themes such as loss and grief, parenthood, mental health and our preconceived ideas about what should and what shouldn't. I really loved the way how the author showed by means of the male and the female perspectives that two people can experience the same thing in completely different ways, thus creating two different versions of the truth. It was so frustrating. I don't know how many times I shouted at these characters to start bl**dy listening and to talk to each other. There were several times when I thought I could predict what Louise or Adam were going to do, and each time, Mr. Cooper surprised me. The ending didn't go the way I wanted it to. Usually, I would whine about that. In this case, it was actually the icing on the cake. Even taking into account my struggle with the first half of this book, which jumped about too much for me, I'm going to have to give this the full stars. This is a debut novel. Nigel Jay Cooper is a writer to keep on your radar. He is extremely perceptive and knows how to create a unique and painfully honest story. You know you’ve hit on a great book when you can’t shake the characters out of your head, and you find yourself thinking about them when you should be doing something else. Beat the Rain does exactly that. The writing is beautiful - there are some sections where I wished it would never end. But there’s something else that made me love it so much - it’s a rare talent that can take on the ordinary subject of life in a long term, grown up relationship and cast a light deep into the realities of what that really means for the two people involved, how it affects you and the people around you, and what happens when you go off-course. There’s a deep compassion in the voice of the author, and the bleaker moments are interspersed with some properly laugh out loud bits where you can’t quite believe someone just said what they did. I was invested in these characters from the very beginning; the pacing was good and dialogue well written. You are really able to put yourself in the shoes of Louise, Tom, and Adam straight from the opening pages. What follows is an emotional rollercoaster as you follow what seems to be quite ordinary life. About halfway through the book I realised this psychological thriller was not all that it seemed, and by the time certain truths are revealed I knew that this was a book unlike any I've read for quite a long time. I think what makes this story so compelling is how skillfully the author has realised his protagonists. The problems they face are problems that many of us face, every single day. Whilst their responses are sometimes fantastical, for the most part I could feel a terrible lot of empathy for each one. Adam, who has lost someone close to him, struggling with self-identity and self-medicating substance abuse. Louise, dealing with a tricky childhood and her own loss plus the restlessness that can come from long term established relationships and motherhood. Even the secondary characters here are fun because who of us doesn't have an awful Imogen hanging around? What is particularly enjoyable about this compelling drama is the lack of gratuitous and visceral imagery often employed by writers of thrillers as a cheap way to titillate. The emotional pain of the characters is the emphasis here and it is beautifully and intricately described and evolves over the many years that the book is set in. The integrity and care that the author employs to depict their inner turmoil is painstakingly beautiful and some of the passages are wonderfully intense purely for the depth and darkness of thought that they are able to convey. What a surprising book. It was totally different to what I was expecting to read and yet it works. The story centres around Louise and Adam after the death of Adams brother. If you are hoping to have likable characters you will be disappointed they are not especially so Louise. The slow unfolding of her back story really held my attention. This book will break your heart. If you can't handle intense emotions, stay away from it. Without trying to give much of the story away and avoiding repeating the blurb, one of the things I liked the most about the story is how Nigel Jay Cooper takes a challenging risk in this novel. He dares to reverse the traditional roles in a marriage and explores the different struggles parenthood can bring to a couple, and to each spouse. He goes deep in character development and introspection under both perspectives. Are we sick people if we can't instantly love our children? Does a man become weak and ordinary by taking a domestic duty? What about our sex drive and needs?Perhaps my biggest challenge was to set my preconceived ideas aside and allow the characters to be without my judgment; to be a silent witness of the hopes and sorrows of these flawed people. Grief and loss are perhaps the main themes of the story. But so is hope, and trust, and acceptance. The plot is intriguing, and it won't let go. The story is told parts by Louise, parts by Adam. There are also several interludes. Each interlude reveals a bit more of the inevitable end, and I couldn't find the willpower to stop reading. The story comes with unexpected and original twists, and I loved them. Brilliant! I didn't think there was any power in the world that could keep me away from watching a fresh, "out of the oven" episode of Game of Thrones. That was until last night when I couldn't stop reading this book. I had the urgency to know how the story ended. It was a desperate crave. Who cares if Jon Snow lives? I needed to know what happened to Louise, Adam and Jarvis. It couldn't wait. I wanted to phone Cooper and demand explanations. That's how emotionally involved I became. Insane! All I've done today is tell my friends they need to read the book so we can talk about it. You will need someone to discuss this story. It certainly makes an excellent bookclub selection! Louise is devastated when her lover Tom dies unexpectedly. Well it was unexpected for her, he knew he was dying. She finds love marriage and kids with his twin brother Adam and life carries on in quite an unremarkable way until Jarvis arrives in town. Louise finds herself instantly attracted to him, and Adam seems to enjoy having him around as well but Jarvis has a secret and the effects might be quite devastating. Beat the Rain was an interesting read about a modern day love relationship and the consequences of people's actions. It was emotional, raw and very true to what happens nowadays. At first I really struggled with the plot, I didn't like where it was going and I honestly thought I wouldn't be able to get through it. But then it all clicked into place, Nigel Cooper weaved a fabulous story with some very flawed characters.There were a few little twists to the story that I wasn't expecting... I loved Nigel's braveness to the book, he has produced a moving and true tale that a lot of people would connect with. I didn't particularly like Louise, I felt sorry for Adam at times but I feel this is what Nigel wanted us to feel. The ending surprised me which is always a good thing! We find ourselves making the same decisions as the story progresses because there doesn't seem to be a way out of the inevitable truths. Well this book's plot is 50 shades of messed up... and when I say “50 shades of messed up” I actually have a positive connotation in mind. Messed up is what's happening to the characters and messed up is real, messed up is life itself, no sugar coating, and I love that. Grief. Multifaceted response to loss. Not only emotional response but physical, cognitive, behavioral, social, philosophical dimensions. Curious enough almost every book that I have read in the last weeks addressed grief in a way or another. How much can we blame on grief? Can you consider grief as a mitigating circumstance? It is very tempting to say/think that Adam and Louise's problems started with grief; that grief pushed them in that original situation. But in my view that means stopping at the outer layer. I see so much in their background, I see emotional abuse therefore lack of self confidence, I see lack of growth. “Perhaps that's how all relationships end, not with a bang but with the accumulation of millions of tiny moments that matter, going unnoticed by one partner or the other because life gets in the way. And then one day you both stop trying to make the other one notice anymore. And that's it, the slow death is in motion. The rest is entropy.” Perhaps... But what about instead of trying to make the partner notice just communicate it to him/her?! Let her/him in “I want to tell you everything, I want us to open up again” - preventable tragedy? Perhaps … “Things are rarely one-sided” - let's say I mostly agree, but I still blame Louise. Yes, I can give her mitigating circumstances but that's up to a point. From there on it is only her fault. She really had so many moments to redeem herself, to grow, to communicate! Darn BEAT THE RAIN for making me feel too many feelings. Bleak, unapologetically honest, and filled with shocking plot twists, this isn't one for those looking for an easy breezy summer read. Don't get me wrong, I mean that in the best way possible. The characters were all very clever, in that you can't help but empathize with them despite not being able to like them. The writing was beautiful, with every line sounding 'quotable', and always kept me engaged. Unfortunately it didn't turn out the way I'd hoped, but I can't elaborate without spoiling! From the first chapter I wanted to know...what the hell was happening to this woman? I wasn't even sure I liked her, but I gave a shit, I really cared about how she would get through her experience. I felt uneasy and uncomfortable and I couldn't stop... Nigel Jay Cooper's characters feel like people you know, or at least people you thought you knew. Their stories are those of human kind; complex, fragile, deceptive, darkly funny...and real. I'd not had much chance to read since having my baby but this book reinvigorated my passion for reading. What did I think? I think I really enjoyed this read. Nigel has the words that's for sure, and he has stories too. No-one but Adam was likeable to me but I still rooted for them all, I wanted a happy ending..please,please sugar coat this ending for me Nigel, I thought..Obviously i cant say here whether he did or not, but ether way nothing is a disappointment. A few things that brought it down a star for me..I felt it a good bit to long and the lives as they unfolded to separated, I kept thinking that, wowsa, Mr. Nigel could have got 3 good books out of this one story: I want to read all about Tom and Louise and the ending would have been where Adam came in. A book about Louise, her background and what then happens when she meets Jarvis. A book about Adam and his marriage to Louise and then meeting Jarvis. An indication of a terrific book is the inability to put it down, coupled with the need to tell *everyone* about it. Truly heartbreaking but with moments of wonderfully light humour. In Beat The Rain Nigel Jay Cooper gave us an emotional and raw portrait of vulnerable, flawed people who try hard to overcome grief and their insecurities. It's not an easy read but it's so compelling and beautiful and I couldn't put it down. Loved it! Louise, unlucky Louise. Abandoned at young age by her mother, bullied at school, lost her dad to cancer at 16, her partner, Tom, dies. Nothing seems to work for her, nothing or no one seems to be able to fix her. And then there's Adam, Tom's twin. Their relationship wild, seemingly forbidden but also strangely liberating. Adam. Adam who's always been 'and Adam', always part of a duo. Always in somebody's shadow. They're so wrong together but they're also really good together. At the beginning it's their grief that connects them, the strange wrongness of being together after Tom - they make it work the best they can, children come along, life happens and they stay together. Their love is not perfect, not fairy tale like, it's the mundane everyday kind of love but it's love nonetheless. Then Jarvis arrives in their lives. Charming and handsome, kind and caring. 4 Stars. Everything Louise is as a person stems from the lonely child she was, listening to her parents arguing. Her father made her feel safe after her mother walked out but he dies. Promiscuous, self deluded confusing desire with love she falls for Tom who somehow bequeathed her, on his death, to his twin Adam who has always felt in his twins shadow. Less worthy, less loved, less lovable. This unpromising beginning to their relationship and marriage underpins subsequent events and when Jarvis, like an incendiary bomb, is thrown into the mix ... Or mess... their lives explode and the fallout is spectacular. Louise is deluded misguided and selfish, Adam is a bit of a saint and weak. If ever a couple needed relationship couple counselling it is these two. Louise is irritating and hard to like. Adam deserved a better life and wife. It is a modern story about modern lives and the mess people make when there is little communication. There were times when reading I wanted to bash Adam and Lou's heads together and say sort it out. Some echoes of a good David Nicholls here and there. I was thinking of his book US. This story explores choices and crossroad moments and missed communication. I liked this book which is essentially a story of a marriage and all the ways two people make themselves miserable. There were some interesting twists I didn't see coming and some good writing that was thought-provoking. Louise is really awful and it's hard to root for her, but Adam isn't perfect either. This book was well written, and I found it refreshing that a male author could actually write a female part so well. Many men really simplify a woman's brain and how we think and I think this author captured a real woman very well. Impressive! For a debut novel it's an admirable job, and he doesn't seem to fall into any of the traps that new writers seem to - stunted or uncomfortable dialogue, repetition, or premature endings as if they are eager to finish the book without going through the entire story. This is one of my favourite books I’ve read in a long time. Be prepared because once you start, it’s one of those stay-awake-all-night-til-you-finish-it books. And you’ll be glad you did. The storyline had me hooked from the start, but what makes this such a rare find is how the author captures the day to day minutiae inside a relationship that could so easily be our own. This insight into what’s going on around us, at times heart-wrenching and other times very funny, leaves you feeling glad to be human and alive.
