A love story about dysfunctional people. Can Louise move on from the loss of her lover Tom? Can she and Tom's twin brother Adam really find a way to love one another? Or are they trapped on a path of self-destruction, moving towards a tragedy neither can avoid?

I literally couldn’t put this book down, I became completely immersed in the somewhat dysfunctional lives of the characters. The end twisted and turned for me and I found myself reeling along with the characters, often finding myself gasping and open mouthed. Five stars. ~ Lea, Amazon
Beat The Rain is simply a beautifully written book and I think I might have found the 21st century Thomas Hardy. This novel is written with the same kind of character introspection and flaws that you’d find in Tess or Jude. I loved it. It is a very powerful read about two pretty dysfunctional protagonists, Louise and Adam and their relationship. It articulates how easily a relationship can fall apart if communication fails: very thought provoking. I can’t say that any of the characters are particularly likeable being so utterly self-absorbed but you really get into their psyche through the excellent writing. It is an brilliant examination of humanity, self-delusion and self-depiction. Five stars. ~ Mary H, Amazon
A gripping and emotive story that keeps you second guessing all the way to the end. Strongly written characters, frustratingly flawed yet somehow you keep hoping for them. This book touched on so many themes that are close to my own experiences with genuine understanding and sympathy, I'd recommend it without hesitation and will be reading more by this author. ~ NKM, Amazon Customer Review
What an incredible writer and incredible novel. The style, the detail, the deeply captivating imagery. The powerful psychological depth that keeps you gripped. Boy, does this male writer know how to write a deeply complex and believable female character. This book deserves to be vastly read by all...buy it and marvel at it, as I did. 5 Stars. ~ Jules, Goodreads Review
Absolutely compelling, gripping, deeply psychological, often chilling novel. It shows the inner workings of complex difficulties in life, relationships, death, self value and hopes. Incredible characters. Brilliant writing. One of the best writers I've ever come across. I look forward to the next new novel from Nigel Cooper. Buy this - you won't regret it! 5 stars. ~ Julie D, Amazon Customer Review
Gripping, dark and unputdownable! A breath of fresh air to read a thoroughly engaging story where the characters are believable and not written to be likeable, or that the twists take you to a bizarrely happy ending. Thought-provoking. Original. A great read - seriously recommend it. 5 stars. ~ Lucy, Amazon Customer Review
What an amazing book. I thought that I had the story of the brothers’ love for the same girl down as a straightforward love story but I was so wrong. This story gripped my attention from the start. There were twists and unexpected moments in the story which keeps the reader guessing and the ending came totally from left field! The plot and characters are well-developed and will stay with you for a long time after you finish the story. It’s a love story with an edge. ~ Lesley Muriss, Amazon Customer Review
It’s hard to find anything that hasn’t already been said but I loved this book. I loved the characters, Adam and Louise totally draw you in and you can’t stop thinking about them. I couldn’t put this book down. Great writing and really interesting story with some twists that I wasn’t expecting. I would definitely recommend this book as I really enjoyed reading it. ~ Lou Lou, Amazon Customer Review
This book was both desperately sad and wholly uplifting. Author Nigel Cooper writes about life and love in all its stark reality, dealing with death and love, misery and elation. Louise’s boyfriend, Tom, dies without ever having shared with her that he was terminally ill. She soon finds new love and gets married. But is this marriage really right? Or was it simply pre-ordained by Tom? And then, much later, beautiful, charismatic Jarvis appears on the scene in Brighton, tearing through the family and causing utter destruction and chaos. A spellbinding read which I enjoyed. ~ Sue Purbrick, Amazon Customer Review
A stunningly written book. First time I've read a book by the author nigel Jay cooper and what a read. Would highly recommend, 5 stars. ~ Parvina Rani Begum, Amazon Customer Review
A brilliant and intense read. Unexpected twists and turns which left me breathless at the end. 5 stars. ~ Carol Morrin, Amazon Customer Review
A spectacular debut novel by Nigel Jay Cooper. This compelling tale of love and loss is deeply moving and wonderfully written. Full of troubled characters, hidden messages and unexpected twists and turns, this book took me on an emotional roller coaster ride and had hooked me from start to finish. I won this novel in a Goodreads giveaway and it's one I won't forget in a hurry. ~ Lisa, Goodreads Review
Five stars - I simply loved this book. I'm a very hard to please reader, I lose interest quickly and my attention span is appalling but this had me from the first chapter and stayed with me until I could bury myself in it again. It's beautifully written, and is about life and love and mistakes. The characters are compelling yet flawed. You can't decide if you love them or hate them, in the end I gave up trying to judge them and just let myself get absorbed in their tale. If the author had another out I'd buy it in a heart beat. Loved it. ~ Poetry Fan, Amazon Customer Review
A wonderful read, compelling, heartbreaking and at times uncomfortable to read, as the author digs deep into the failings and psyches of his two main characters. It is in some way, a cautionary tale on the choices we make and the lives we lead, Beat the Rain is a psychological drama rather than a thriller, which has you hooked the further into the book you read, combing a page-turning plot with brilliant characterisation and raw emotion. I could barely put it down by the time I was half way through, and by the end was pretty wrung out. Nigel Jay Cooper is undoubtedly a name to watch if his debut is anything to go by. I thoroughly recommend this little find. Five stars. ~ Emma S, Amazon Customer Review
Fantastic book - 5 stars. Well, what can I say? I received this book this morning and have completely read it. Unable to put it down once I put my children to bed. It completely had me riveted what an amazing achievement for a first book. Really amazing story that in places made me sad, laugh and bring memories back I could personally relate to, fantastic just what you need from a book. The ending was for me refreshing, not a happy ending but stark realisation of what destruction, lies and the effect on multiple relationships cause with people. I pray you write more and will always be interested in reading more of your work. ~ Danielle Bayley, Amazon Customer Review
We chose Beat the Rain for our book club and loved it! As well as being an enjoyable read, there are so many good topics of discussion in this book. The plot takes unexpected twists and turns which keeps you turning the pages to find out what happens next. The Ancaster, Canada book club gives this one two thumbs up... 5 stars :) ~ Jessica Simons, Amazon Customer Review
Stays with you after reading. These days I can find it particularly difficult to read, to focus. I'll open a book and my phone will go off andi'lll give up. But this book made me not care about what messages I may receive whilst reading. It's so rare to find a book that is on your mind when you're not consciously looking at it. On a number of times I noticed an emotion in myself and realised it was not due to something that was happening to me, but due to something that was happening to a character in the book. So greatly written! There is something in there that everyone can relate to. ~ Tessa, Amazon Customer Review
Finished the book yesterday. I want to read it again! I can't say that about most books. I was surprised at the accuracy of writing about a woman's thoughts and feelings as a man, it was very well captured. The story was simple yet portrayed very complex issues and the writing was both raw yet beautiful and gave great depth to the characters. I'm an avid reader (usually crime fiction), Beat The Rain ☔️ is definitely one of the best books I've read in a long time and I will be highly recommending it to friends. The only negative and very small point is that I wouldn't have described it as a psychological thriller.... it was better! ~ Lily, Facebook
Compelling, creative and relatable. Read it now! Very powerful read, unexpected twists and a real can't put down. I allowed myself one book to read for fun between my studies and couldn't put it down! I read it in two days flat. Very good, relateable characters you actually care about. Can't wait for the next one! ~ Lorraine, Amazon Customer Review
5 Stars... Wonderfully deep and captivating. I finished this book two weeks ago and I still can't stop thinking about it. A great story and so well written. The characters are really brought to life by the author. I can't believe this is his first book! Can't wait for the second! ~ Amazon Customer, Amazon UK
A powerful, affecting, beautifully written story about identity, motivation and the impact of loss. Throughout, It has the reader wondering about their own likely reactions to life events. ~ Jane Riddell, Amazon Customer Review
The writing is absolutely compelling. Normally it takes me quite a while before I really get emotionally attached to a book, but this book pulled me in from the first page. The characters are beautifully written and flawed and the plot twists are endless. I finished this book last night and I'm still reeling in my emotions. This has become one of my favourite books of all time. ~ Charlotte Wolf, Goodreads
In the competitive world of contemporary women's fiction, psychological thrillers are currently topping the charts, with multi-million best-sellers including Gillian Flynn's Gone Girl, and Girl on The Train by Paula Hawkins among others. But in a field dominated, understandably, by female writers comes debut author Nigel Cooper to prove he too can compete with the best. And the good news is that he succeeds, rising where most male authors stumble - if they dare try at all - in the realization of a complicated, compelling female protagonist. His novel, Beat The Rain - a semifinalist in this year's Goodreads Choice Awards - is a gripping and twisting tale of a dysfunctional couple whose inexorable domestic disintegration is mirrored in their mental collapse with tragic consequences. Louise and Adam are grappling with major issues and baggage in their lives... it's not difficult to understand why this novel has been gathering glowing praise. Not only is it a triumph in its narrative style, alternating chapters between Louise and Adam to share differing perspectives of the same events, its prose is restrained and deeply moving, managing to elicit empathy for the characters even in light of their many flaws and frailties. A kitchen sink drama for the 21st century, it draws in readers into an absorbing page-turner with a simple moral: the grass isn't always greener. Although overlain with a sense of impending doom, Beat The Rain is also peppered with humour, buffering the heaviness with a more light-hearted tone and allowing the reader some breathing space. A unique love - or better, a 'fall out of love' story - set in the cracks of the grimy every day, this psychological thriller is a rollercoaster of a read. Who would have thought that the seven-year itch could become a potentially deadly disease. The genre of contemporary women’s fiction is seen almost as the preserve of women authors, but in Beat the Rain, debut writer Nigel Jay Cooper can hold his head high for penning a moving and gripping read that stands up against the work of his best-selling female peers. The novel, which has been voted a Good Reads Awards 2016 semi-finalist by the reading public, is a psychological thriller that tells the dysfunctional and tragic love story of a couple with issues... Haunting, touching and at times lyrical, Beat The Rain will undoubtedly draw comparisons with bestseller thrillers such as Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn and Girl on The Train by Paula Hawkins. It sends you on an emotional ride that is equal parts rollercoaster and ghost train, and proves that a male author can dare to take on women’s fiction and succeed with aplomb. Such a powerful story that I couldn't put down - so much so that I missed my train stop! The inner emotional histories, guilts and desires of the characters are all stripped back and lain naked for the reader to love, hate, or sometimes relate to. While the characters are ordinary people, the writing is extraordinary, and I was gripped from start to finish. Ever since I finished reading 'A Little Life', I've been trying to find something as memorable, and this has done it for me. It has been almost a week since I missed that train, and the book is still lingering in my brain. I look forward to reading more from this amazing author. ~ Elaine Frost, Amazon Customer Review
I had no idea what to expect... "psychological" to me tends to bring to mind a thriller or something that has you on the edge of the seat. This did not to that. That, however is not a bad thing. What it does look at is the being that is "human psychology" how and why we behave how we do. The main character, Louise, has seen and done it all ... suffering from abandonment at an early age from her mother and used to being the apple of her father's eye ... adult life has something to live up to. However the security she thought she had always craved becomes boring and dull and unknowingly she seems intent to destroy it all only realising when it is too late what she has done. In some ways there are elements that will make the reader uncomfortable knowing that they have behaved exactly like that. The characters are skillfully drawn and there are a few twists and turns that are unexpected. The only thing that really bugged me was the brief encounter with the Jackie O character ... could not see the point in that ... Worth a read! ~ Helen Franks, Goodreads http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/1606131105
The book is about a relationship is based on everything but love... full of wonderful insights on life, it is a very real book with very real issues .The turns and twists in the book are dramatic and unexpected...It is a very relatable read and anyone who is looking for a book that is set today and shows just how complex we make our lives will enjoy it. You can see from the synopsis what the gist of the story is however I was not expecting what I read. We are sitting in the Psychological Thriller genre with this book and I was very much right there with the characters as I read it. Firstly, I want to point out that this is the debut novel by Nigel Jay Cooper and I was blown away! This is the second debut novel that I have reviewed and both were amazing and both very different. I encourage you to pick up a copy today! It is available on Amazon both for Kindle and in Paperback. "A 5 huge stars for this rollercoaster ride." It says so much about a book when I read it in one sitting- something I have never done before. Staying awake well beyond my normal time desperate to keep my eyes open to complete this. It grabbed me, pulled me in and I couldn’t put it down. This is a very well written book. The characters, especially Louise totally come to life in front of your eyes. Whilst some might not understand some of her actions and thoughts, others will go “yup- I could/might have done that”. It is the proverbial emotional roller coaster. The dinner party made me smile (we all have had a friend like that- right? Note the “had”). Some parts made me cringe – Imogen especially. Both sides of the story are portrayed well and yes there always two sides to that old coin but we don’t always appreciate the reverse. A male view can be so surprising to a female. (Think of man flu!). There are twists and turns not least of all towards the end. I won’t spoil anything but one certainly took me by surprise. The ending? You will have to read this to find out for yourself but endings are a big thing for me and can make the difference between 4* and 5*, enough to say that it leaves you on a cliff edge and completes the story. Not a light read for the emotional. However a thoroughly, totally un-put-down-able book. A stunning debut- thank you Nigel, very much appreciated. I was given an ARC of this book from the author in exchange for an open and honest review. This was a good read, a very good read, and a very strong debut from author Nigel Jay Cooper. He is definitely an author to watch out for. In Beat the Rain he came up with a pretty unique plot. Beat the Rain was a fabulous story of a marriage in decline and the secrets and lies we put in motion to get through. It’s billed as a psychological thriller but I don’t think that’s accurate. It’s more a domestic tale with a few twists. Either way, it’s a great debut novel for Mr. Cooper. Louise’s boyfriend, Tom, dies suddenly and leaves a video telling her to move on with her life and how his twin brother, Adam, might help her with that. They can help each other. Adam has been in love with Louise and through their grief over Tom, they get married. Years later, Louise is struggling and she meets a man named Jarvis, who changes their whole world – for good or bad? Told in a flashback/non-linear fashion that does NOT distract from the overall narrative but adds to it, Beat the Rain is a excellent story well told and fabulously crafted. Go read it!! Thank you to NetGalley and Mr. Cooper for the ARC!!! ~ Miranda's Book Heaven, https://mirandasbookheaven.wordpress.com/2016/10/05/beat-the-rain-nigel-jay-cooper/
A wonderful debut, with emotionally scarred, dysfunctional protagonists who are wired for self-destruction. An original and compelling read. ~ Andrea, Amazon Customer Review
Wow, I just finished this unique book. It is about love, fractured relationships, deception with a dash of Fatal Attraction thrown in. If you are looking for a story that introduces you to interesting characters and has taken a few steps off the beaten path then this is the one for you. What a wonderful first novel and I'm looking forward to further stories from this author. Thank you to NetGalley for an advanced copy of Beat the Rain in exchange for an honest review. ~ Becky Narlinger, NetGalley, Goodreads, Amazon Review
Wow. This is an extraordinary book. An incredible achievement for a first novel. I was totally absorbed by it, and read it in record time for me. I couldn't put it down. The plot twists and turns with a strong sense of impending doom. The characters spring off the page alive (or at least, living), and the setting in Brighton is portrayed to perfection. There's a great sense of humour running alongside the tragedy, which makes it a joy when you come across a great gag.I wholeheartedly recommend Beat the Rain, and I can't wait to see what Nigel Jay Cooper comes up with next, unless it's called 'Yesterday's Croissant'. ~ Roland Hamilton, Amazon Customer Review
Really enjoyed reading "Beat the Rain" by Nigel Jay Cooper. He is a natural writer and the story flowed as it unravelled the characters and their complex lives filled with emotions such as love, loss, hope, rejection and despair. The story itself is deep and emotional with unusual twists and turns which kept me captivated throughout the book. The author manages to bring the characters to life by creating tangible emotions and feelings allowing the reader to empathise with the characters; to the point which you almost believe it is real and not fiction. I would strongly recommend this book to others. ~ Shirley Coleman, Amazon Reader Review
Nigel Jay Cooper is an excellent author, getting so deeply into the heads of his characters that he takes the reader along for the dive. Reading this book has been, for me, a totally immersive experience., and left me completely enveloped in the deepest recesses of the psyches of the two main characters Adam and Louise. This was at times a breathless ride, through depression, obsession, grief, despair, excitement and anxiety. As a therapist I found the internal portrayal dead on, and it was hard to put the book down. Each plot twist kept me hanging on for more ... now I find myself hanging on for Nigel Jay Cooper's next book, whenever that might be. ~ Beverley Kune, Netgalley, Goodreads, Amazon review
This is a surprising book on many levels. The plot and characters are both well crafted, and in unexpected ways. It is a love story about dysfunctional people, but again in a fresh and interesting take. Cooper can write both male and female characters and project their inner thoughts equally well. The roles portrayed here are against type, which makes you examine your own suppositions and prejudices. It is a dark and tormented tale, but you find yourself drawn in, slowly and then quickly. Much like passing a highway accident, you want to know more about why, when, and how it all happened. If you like novels about likable people, this isn't for you. No one in this book is without some faults, some quite big ones. But if you have been in a failed relationship, much of this book will ring true. You may not want to relive your own relationship, but Cooper has recreated a well-built model that is worth looking at from many different points of view. Ultimately, I ended up re-reading this book after six months, and enjoyed it more, being able to absorb the numerous plot twists and concentrate on what he was trying to do. Highly recommended. ~ David Strom, Netgalley, Amazon Customer Review
This book is well worth the read. The characters are very easy to identify with and the story flows and gets you totally absorbed. Louise is happily married to Tom and then tragedy strikes. She gets involved with Tom's twin brother Adam and they are fine for a while until someone else enters their lives. Then the story takes a dramatic, unexpected turn and one I was not expecting. It was one of those books that you can't put down, but at the same time you don't want the story to end. It would make an awesome movie. Will definitely look out for more books by this author. I was given the book by Netgalley for an honest review. ~ Pat Pullum, Morethanareview.com
It is refreshing to read a novel by a new author that does not write in an overly descriptive manner but has a refreshingly pared back style which is reminiscent of Haruki Murakami's work. Nigel Jay Cooper (NJC) effectively draws readers into the tangled emotional web of characters Louise, Adam and Jarvis. Without giving too much away, NJC clearly has an understanding of the effects that grief and bereavement have on people and how these circumstances can influence their subsequent actions. Overall, this is a stunning debut full of emotional depth and insight. I look forward to reading his next novel! ~ Jo Cameron-Symes, Cultural Life Connections
This sounds like a new voice. Fresh and different. A man writing women's fiction! I have to say he was good at it. He's so capable of grabbing your interest till the last page. Nothing more interesting to me than reading a good debut. It's like following your own senses. You're discovering it on your own not guided by the pre fame of the well known authors. I'm looking forward to reading more books by Nigel. ~ Maha, Meshas's Corner
I found this book totally absorbing. It tells the story of a couple whose relationship gradually unravels and eventually completely falls apart, in part through a lack of communication. Nigel's storytelling had me engaged from the start and I really felt for all of the characters. I look forward to reading his second book. An amazing debut! ~ Michele Young, Reviewer (Book Giveaway Winner)
This was a great book - lots of intrigue, great character exploration. The story is written in two viewpoints - Louise and Adam. Louise is a young woman with a sad family history - abandoned by her mom and then her dad died. She meets and falls in love with Tom, who also passes away. Enter Adam, Tom's twin brother. They get together, both trying to fill a need left by so much loss and grief. But those are deep holes and therein lies the story. Are they enough for each other? Can they make it work? What I really loved about this book was the writing - there were so many beautiful phrases that just made you stop and take notice. And possibly apply them to your own life - be present, listen, don't take things for granted. An amazing debut - looking forward to more from this author! ~ Sharon May, My Crazy Book Addiction http://crazybookaddiction.blogspot.co.uk/2016/09/9162016-beat-rain.html?m=1
I received an ARC from NetGalley for an honest review. This book. Woah. Maybe it is because I am at the phase in life when everyone I know is getting married, having babies, or even getting divorced... but this book hits you in the feelers. I'm almost left speechless because the story swirled me up and spit me out. I'm sitting here thinking of alternate endings, but they wouldn't work. Glad I read this book. ~ Katherine Paxton, Goodreads https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/1744752466
A wonderfully written novel with a captivating end. As soon as you thought you knew where the story was going, your ideas were quickly turned on their head and you were sent off in a different direction, continually finding your preconceptions challenged. A riveting read that was difficult to put down. ~ Maureen Forbes, NetGalley reviewer
First of all, let me say that I would give this book 6 stars if I could! It touched me in ways I can't even explain and it changed me (how, I'm not sure) for the better. When Louise marries her dead husband's twin brother, Adam, we may think we can guess how the story will unfold. But we can't possibly see the outcomes that await! It's told in beautiful prose and explores so many issues: grief, love, guilt, sorrow, desire....all the while examining what it means to be a human with all the flaws with which we are born or maybe acquire. It gives us many insights into the rich tapestry of marriage and how it can ebb and flow. It is at one both breathtaking and heartbreaking. This is a novel that will stay with me for a long time. It is, quite simply a lovely book! ~ Anne Foster, NetGalley
I would recommend this book highly, and look forward to seeing more of the author's work in future. I was invested in these characters from the very beginning; the pacing was good and dialogue well written. You are really able to put yourself in the shoes of Louise, Tom, and Adam straight from the opening pages. What follows is an emotional rollercoaster as you follow what seems to be quite ordinary life. About halfway through the book I realised this psychological thriller was not all that it seemed, and by the time certain truths are revealed I knew that this was a book unlike any I've read for quite a long time. I think what makes this story so compelling is how skillfully the author has realised his protagonists. The problems they face are problems that many of us face, every single day. Whilst their responses are sometimes fantastical, for the most part I could feel a terrible lot of empathy for each one. Adam, who has lost someone close to him, struggling with self identity and self medicating substance abuse. Louise, dealing with a tricky childhood and her own loss plus the restlessness that can come from long term established relationships and motherhood. Even the secondary characters here are fun, because who of us doesn't have an awful Imogen hanging around? For a debut, I thought this was a really solid work of fiction. Occasionally there were some oversights in editing that let the writing down, such as recycled passages or words. In my opinion there were also some story threads that could have been left out entirely to strengthen the flow of the book, but these are small criticisms and it doesn't detract from the imaginative plot from a first time novelist. ~ Cate Howard, NetGalley, Amazon
An intriguing and captivating story with many twists and a totally unexpected ending. A thoroughly enjoyable read. ~ Cedric Crichton , NetGalley
All the other reviewers have discussed the plot at length, so let me comment on other aspects of the book. I think that it would be a wonderful title to assign a class to show gender fluidity in a compelling, visceral way. The characters are complex and very believable; almost anyone who is partnered will identify with the marital fight scenes! It's a beautifully written book, too, with a propulsive can't-put-down narrative, and cinematic-it begs to be made into a film (publisher: pursue these rights!). Highly recommended! Can't wait for Cooper's next book. ~ Wendy Clark, Columbia University (educator), NetGalley
I don't remember the last time I read a book in two sittings. It was only because I had an urgent thing to do that I didn't read it all in one go. It's a story about people who are like people you know, with all the same hangups, lack of communication, irritating and lovable habits. I did want to shout at them a few (lot of) times, but I could understand exactly why they couldn't speak about the important things at the right time. The style is compelling, with the 'interludes' keeping you guessing (well, kept me guessing anyway). I wasn't sure which character was talking until the last one, and then I hoped so much I was wrong! Looking forward to the next book...... ~ Janice Dykes, Amazon Customer Review
Gripping storytelling from the very start and impossible to put down. An excellent read with lots of twists and turns to keep you engaged. Highly recommended. ~ A F Avella, Amazon Customer Review
I could not put this book down. So cleverly written with twists and turns that keep you turning the page. The characters are intriguing. I've never read a book where I've disliked most of them! I laughed and cried. A totally wonderful read which I thoroughly recommend! ~ Amazon Customer Review
Compelling and compulsive. Sometimes you can't beat the rain, you just have to get wet, and if you won't communicate, then everyone around you gets soaked too. There are already so many rave reviews for 'Beat the Rain' that it is difficult to find anything new to say, however I enjoyed this book so enormously that I want to add a few thoughts. First, on the cover the book is described as a psychological thriller - this description nearly put me off reading it as I don't like being frightened. But it isn't frightening, not like the terrifying film, 'Sleeping with the Enemy' for example. Not at all. It is a tense and intensely emotional portrayal of the deep-rooted insecurities vested in a child's psyche by the sense of it not being worthy of being loved. Beat the Rain is a beautifully and compellingly written novel about the relationships of ordinary people - the sort of people we all know, or may think we know, but having read this book, do we? Cooper delves very deep into the psyches of his characters, and in so doing lays bare their innermost thoughts and unexpressed emotions exposing their every flaw and wrinkle. His observations of human frailties are so painfully honest I felt almost uncomfortable for some of the characters, in particular the ones who, through an inability to communicate, seem unable to beat the rain and are on course to get very wet indeed. Through Cooper's skilful depiction of his main characters you may think you know them pretty well, but just when you think you can guess what they'll do next, there is a twist as surprising as it is unexpected. Highly recommended. ~ Veryan Williams-Wynn, Goodreads https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/1720862511?book_show_action=false&from_review_page=1
This debut novel by Nigel Jay Cooper is absolutely lovely and haunting. It’s a rare combination of page-turning psychological suspense and beautiful language. Beat the Rain opens with the death of Tom, twin brother of Adam and partner of Louise. Tom’s death was unexpected by everyone except Tom himself, so the main characters are both left untethered by loss. They marry, and life proceeds as normal, until it doesn’t. Narration alternates (mostly) between Louise and Adam, and I found Adam to be the more vividly-realized character. His voice is the more introspective, vulnerable, and thus more sympathetic. Cooper’s use of language is mesmerizing, piercing and true. Pondering the functional alcoholic: “Functioning. Such a good word. So descriptive of their lives . . . So descriptive of a lot of people’s lives, he imagines. Functioning. All the moving parts doing what they should but nothing going on behind the scenes, no sparks, no real life.” And this little gem about small talk: “Maybe Adam had been hard on the woman, she’d probably only been making conversation. Except conversation is always laden with meaning and hidden truths and politics.” Beat the Rain is full of those hidden truths, small jewels that together create the mosaic of human experience, but an experience that is made beautiful by broken things. This debut novel is so compelling and well-written - each element of the story is strategically placed. In fact, it’s one of the best novels of its kind that I have read in quite a long time. Beat the Rain makes the sometimes arduous task of “discovering literary gems” all worthwhile. I hope that Nigel Jay Cooper is working on another novel. He’s one author to keep an eye out for. I didn't know quite what to expect from the title or the cover but I was hooked from the start and I found it hard to put this book down. The author writes beautifully, his language is so articulate and descritptive, his observations really clever however it is not unneccessarily wordy-no fluff here. Cooper throws you right in from the start. I thought I was reading a very sad tale about a slighlty disfunctional couple however I was totally wrong. Every page feels like something totally unexpected happens and slaps you right in the face! Wow, I did not see that coming at all................or that...................or that! There is a twist around every corner. I did want to scream at some of the characters! I felt like I knew them all and wished I could help them get out of their spiraling mess. Quite heart breaking at times. Actually I wanted to hit one of characters, she is such a bitch. The dinner party! Laugh out loud! Brilliantly written. I can see a mini series in the making! I would defo recommend this book and I will be buying it for all my girlfriends. ~ Kimley Elliot, Amazon Customer Review
This was an amazing read and a real page turner! The depth of the characters involved and Nigel's understanding of their needs and complexities is compelling and makes you wonder about what human beings are all about Beautifully written and paced, it takes you constantly up and down, I did not see many of the twists coming, this books draws you in and does not let you go. Really looking forward to Nigel's next book. ~ , Amazon Customer Review
Nigel Jay Cooper's ability to crawl inside these characters and examine the complexities of their tragic, deceptive and sometimes banal lives with such delicacy, humour and, dare I say it, authenticity, demonstrates a keen understanding of human frailty, in all it's guises. I'm frustrated by them and care deeply about them, I find myself calling out; I wish they could hear me plead with them. These people could be my neighbours, they could be my friends... Perhaps that's why Beat The Rain is so bloody captivating, there is so much resonance, we've all made these mistakes, and we see ourselves in the story, we hear ourselves in the exchanges; this stuff really gets under your skin, because it's so recognisable. This is the kind of novel that invites us to be intrigued about relationships and opens our eyes to the mysteries of human connection. Why we fall in love, why we fall out of love, why we get to the places we get to, and why we can't see the wood for the trees; why we are. It's rare to find an author whose writing can bring death, marriage and kids to such emotional heights without it feeling melodramatic, but he's nailed it and I can't wait to read his next novel. ~ , Amazon Customer Review
A gritty debut novel, but also interspersed with humour. Takes you on a roller coaster journey with the characters & an unexpected twist at the end - read it almost in one go! Five stars. ~ Philippa Harvard-Taylor, Amazon Customer Review
Beat the Rain is a thoroughly compelling read! The fluid writing style and intriguing storyline make this an easy book to digest in one sitting. Covering some very powerful subjects and delving deep into the human psyche, this is a sometimes dark read, but balanced nicely by a subtle level of humour. Whilst some of the characters are not altogether likeable and some of their actions questionable, the complexity of their situations and personalities mean it's more than them simply being unpleasant or selfish. The author provides a sensitive insight into each of their worlds, enabling the reader to develop a sense of empathy that the ordinary bystander would not. The pace of the novel works well; the structure and series of events maintain a satisfying level of interest throughout and the unexpected twists are superbly delivered! I'm excited to see what comes next! ~ Amazon Customer Review, https://www.amazon.co.uk/product-reviews/1785353640/
Thank you to Netgalley, Nigel Jay Cooper, and the publishers for letting me read an advance copy of this book. Really - thank you! Beat The Rain was not what I expected at all. Not from the cover, and not from the synopsis. I've read a few psychological thrillers recently and before too long they all blur into one. Similar story line and similar characters, so I had put off reading this one because I was becoming a bit bored of the genre in general. But I wouldn't class Beat The Rain as a psychological thriller at all. I don't know what I would class it as if I'm being honest. It doesn't really fall into one category but it is a masterpiece in whatever genre you want to place it. The characters are laid bare for the reader, they are so authentic and honest. I felt a connection with each of them which made the book all the more heart wrenching. After a few chapters it felt like I was reading about friends I knew were headed straight for a train wreck and I couldn't stop it. Nor could I stop reading. I had Jarvis figured out quite early on, well - the part that Adam learned about him, not the bit Louise learned - that was a big shocker! And I figured out the interlude a few chapters before the end. But again, that just made it harder, because I was watching B this slow rumble of an earthquake that I knew was going to tear everyone apart, I was only a spectator. In terms of the writing, how beautiful. Some of the passages in this book are the type of thing you see on a huge canvas on people's walls. Nigel Jay Cooper is such a talented writer and uses his secret power (those amazing, psychological passages) sparingly. Which means that you aren't being overwhelmed with metaphors and "flowery language" for the entire book (which then loses its beauty). Instead you get to read a book in plain English, and every once in a while the beauty of the writing just comes out of the page and wraps itself around you. That was one of the highlights for me. As for the general story line. What can I say? Read it. It's gripping, and normal, and you can't put it down. What a fantastic book that reminds you that sometimes you ARE going to get wet. (Read it - you'll understand that last sentence). ~ Lianne Barrington-Waters, Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/1711562928
After starting off slow and already deciding I wasn’t enjoying this book Cooper managed to captivate me and pull me back into the story line. Louise and Adam’s lives seem almost predictable at first, after subconsciously filling in the rest of the plot line the shocks and surprises which Cooper writes were a pleasant surprise. The main, and arguably the most shocking part of the book made me put it down for a few minutes just to process what had just happened. Cooper’s writing to lead up to these twists were fantastic and I can’t wait to read another book by him. The main characters had happily switched their domestic roles, to Adam being the loving stay-at-home parent and Louise being the wage-earner in the household. This dynamic lead to Louise feeling like the odd one out within her family which then leads to meeting Jarvis. Although all 3 of these characters have very likable qualities, Cooper also ensures enough depth to show their flaws as well, and so the connection to them really enabled me to sympathize for them. I wouldn’t read this if you enjoy happy endings, although I found the ending to be eerily satisfying in relation to the story. This is a definite must read to anyone who enjoys a book to bring out emotions. If you want to get hold of this book then it’s being published on the 29th July 2016 in the UK. I’d rate this 4 out of 5 stars. *I received this e-book from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to John Hunt Publishing. ~ Rebecca Armstrong, https://urbanoracleblog.wordpress.com/2016/07/28/book-review-beat-the-rain-by-nigel-jay-cooper/
I finished Beat the rain 2 days ago, the last two days have been a period of mourning, what a exhilarating, emotional, thought provoking, brilliant read. I'm not very good at words so can't articulate effectively, five stars sums it up. ~ Lou Miller, Amazon customer review
Beat the Rain is Nigel Jay Cooper's debut novel, and what an auspicious start to what will be an undoubtedly successful writing career. It's hard to say exactly what this book is about without giving too much away, so--read the book synopsis for plot details and I will share with you some of the great writing that's in this book. There's this: "Perhaps that’s how all relationships end, not with a bang but with the accumulation of millions of tiny moments that matter, going unnoticed by one partner or the other because life gets in the way. And then one day you both stop trying to make the other one notice anymore. And that’s it, the slow death is in motion. The rest is entropy." And this: "I can see things with such clarity now, such useless, blinding clarity. But what’s the point in that now? Knowledge isn’t always powerful. Sometimes, it’s just heart-breaking." And this: "I am my own narrator. Memory is an artist, an impressionist. She adds colour, sound, smell and emotion to events at her whim. She adds, subtracts and embellishes until the event she started documenting is quite unrecognisable to the others who also experienced it, but at the same time, is more truthful to the owner of the memory. There is no reality. There are only impressions of past events, made by a million selves, all interacting with each other, vying for superiority. Reality doesn’t exist, perhaps in the end, that’s my only truth." There's so many great passages like that throughout the book; simply exquisite and thought-provoking writing. The only problem I had with the book is that sometimes I felt that the characters did things for no good reason, they were unrealistic and just didn't make sense. Still, this is a great book and I highly recommend it. Thank you to Netgalley and Roundfire Books for an advance copy of this in exchange for an honest review. ~ Kristina Byington, Goodreads, Advance Reader Copy (NetGalley)
Emotional to say the least! A fantastic journey of relationships and emotions with a surprising twist. Fantastic read. ~ Donna Barnes, Goodreads review
Louise is grieving the death of her husband Tom. Tom has a twin brother called Adam letting go off her past is not easy and she thinks that by marring Adam it will make her pain go away. This is a phycological thriller which is both heartbreaking and funny. This book is not for people who can't cope with raw emotion as it will pull at your heartstrings. I would like to thank Net Galley, John Hunt Publishing and the author Nigel Jay Cooper for my ARC in exchange for an honest review. ~ Louise Wilson, NetGalley Advance Reader Review
I would love to use something better than this worn-out cliché, but I'm tired today because of this book. So here goes, this really was an "emotional rollercoaster". One moment I was thinking things are picking up for the protagonists, perhaps this won't all go down the drain, the next moment it felt like I was being crushed, despairing, at the bleak bottom. And then there would be these really humorous scenes. That dinner party was hilarious. Beat The Rain is the story of a relationship that is gradually degenerating. Told from Louise's and Adam's perspectives, we learn right at the start that Louise's boyfriend, Tom, has died. Tom was Adam's twin brother. Louise and Adam get married. Not a spoiler, it's in the book's blurb. No further summary from me because the rest you will enjoy much more if you start reading this without knowing too much. 'Enjoy' may actually be the wrong word. This isn't the light reading you want to pick up for leisurely days on a sun lounger. In fact, if you're feeling sad or discontent with life, this may not be the best book to pick up at that moment. Also, if you need likable characters, forget it. Now I'm making this sound as if I wouldn't recommend this book. Not at all. This book is going to stay with me. The amazing thing is when I started this, I was expecting to read something different. To be honest, there were moments in the first half of the book when I thought about throwing in the towel and moving on. But this is a book you need to stick with. By the time Jarvis was introduced, about halfway through the book, I knew I couldn't put it down. Hence, feeling slightly tired today. This is a wonderfully insightful look at relationships covering themes such as loss and grief, parenthood, mental health and our preconceived ideas about what should and what shouldn't. I really loved the way how the author showed by means of the male and the female perspectives that two people can experience the same thing in completely different ways, thus creating two different versions of the truth. It was so frustrating. I don't know how many times I shouted at these characters to start bl**dy listening and to talk to each other. There were several times when I thought I could predict what Louise or Adam were going to do, and each time, Mr. Cooper surprised me. The ending didn't go the way I wanted it to. Usually, I would whine about that. In this case, it was actually the icing on the cake. Even taking into account my struggle with the first half of this book, which jumped about too much for me, I'm going to have to give this the full stars. This is a debut novel. Nigel Jay Cooper is a writer to keep on your radar. He is extremely perceptive and knows how to create a unique and painfully honest story. Thanks to John Hunt Publishing for granting me access to an ARC via NetGalley. ~ Petra Ayling, Netgalley, Amazon, Goodreads review (Advance Reader Copy)
Beat the Rain is one of those books you think about for days after finishing. A beautifully written, compelling story with believable yet flawed characters about whom you really care, I didn't want it to end because I didn't want to say goodbye. Touching, thought provoking and, at times bleak, this book draws you in and doesn't let go. ~ Kirsty Baxter Smith, Amazon Customer Review
Its so rare to find a book with the perfect blend of gorgeous writing and ridiculously compelling storyline - this novel got it spot on! Brilliant! ~ Rebecca Symington, Amazon customer review
Unusual, fascinating, I read this book in my lunch hours at work and had to drag myself away each time, I did not see the twist coming at all. I found the characters interesting especially the twin dynamics. The author has a unique understanding of all the different layers in human relationships... I thoroughly recommend this book, it would be great for any book group discussion and look forward to his next one. ~ Lorraine, Amazon Customer Review
I received an free advanced reader's copy (ARC) of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I truly haven read a book of this magnitude in quite some time, if ever. While it is very emotional, humor is thrown in at the right moments. Nigel Jay Cooper is definitely an author to keep tabs on as he has a superb gift in writing. Amazing story, extraordinary book. ~ Tonya M. Aplin , Amazon, Netgalley Advance Reader Copy
A tale to pluck ones heartstrings. Emotionally wrought... Told from "his" and "her" sides of a tumultuous relationship/marriage. Didn't want to put it down yet I found myself reading it from between my fingers as though I were watching a scary movie. ~ Karen S, NetGalley Advance Reader Copy (https://s2.netgalley.com/catalog/book/87447)
I enjoyed the honest look of this marriage between Louise and Adam. It really showed how we accept each other and how often we also overlook our partner. 4 stars. Thank you Netgalley for a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. ~ Lea Wyllie, NetGalley Advance Reader Review
A wonderful read, emotional, funny and surprising. Each time I thought I knew what was going to happen, Cooper wrong-footed me. Truly captivating - sad and even heartbreaking in parts, the author deftly brings in humour at just the right moments to lighten to mood. It's been a long time since I've enjoyed reading something as much as this novel - original and genuinely moving, with something to say to all of us about how we live our lives. ~ DeLoop, Amazon Customer Review
Gripping from start to finish. I couldn't put it down. I laughed and cried and then cried again. Best book I've read in a very long time. ~ Amazon customer review, https://www.amazon.co.uk/product-reviews/1785353640/
You know you’ve hit on a great book when you can’t shake the characters out of your head, and you find yourself thinking about them when you should be doing something else. Beat the Rain does exactly that. The writing is beautiful - there are some sections where I wished it would never end. But there’s something else that made me love it so much - it’s a rare talent that can take on the ordinary subject of life in a long term, grown up relationship and cast a light deep into the realities of what that really means for the two people involved, how it affects you and the people around you, and what happens when you go off-course. There’s a deep compassion in the voice of the author, and the bleaker moments are interspersed with some properly laugh out loud bits where you can’t quite believe someone just said what they did. If you’ve been in a long term relationship, or find yourself in one now wondering what on earth you’re doing, I’d say read this. ~ Amazon Customer Review, amazon.co.uk
I could hardly put this book down. Deliciously full of raw emotion, sometimes funny and often very sad. I loved that I didnt really '' like'' any of the characters which made them interesting and made me want to know more about them. It is very refreshing to discover such an original and intriguing novel. Am hoping Nigel Jay Cooper writes another one! ~ K. Rogers, Amazon Customer Review
After reading the synopsis of this book, I thought I knew what to expect. After a chapter or two, I told myself I understood where the author was taking me. Time and again, I settled in for the ride only to fall flat on my face, breathless... With each page, the question...should I believe? If so, whom? What? Regarding any advice to the reader of this novel...a mysterious character says it best, "Don't try to beat the rain. Just accept that sometimes you're going to get wet." Intrigued? Mystified? Ah, then you're in the right mood to pick up this book. And let this debut author redefine the fine art of deception. ~ Mollie Gates, Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/1656597076
No happy endings here...And that's part of the appeal of this story; a candid account of two people struggling with relationships, particularly their relationship with themself. 4 stars. ~ Stephanie Cross, Amazon customer review
After friends raved so much about this book I thought i'd give it a go and found it very hard to put down. A total emotional roller coaster. Completely addictive, I loved it. 5 Stars. ~ L Spells, Amazon
I literally inhaled the second half of the book in one afternoon. My thanks to the Author for a copy of this debut novel as a competition win. I love receiving signed copies of books and this will definitely be added to my keeper shelf. I was more than happy to give this an outstanding 5 stars or 10/10. It's a well written insight into the complexities and fragilities of human relationships and the repercussions that these have on others. As events in Louise's life take an unexpected turn following the death of her partner, in this modern day love story that at times can be both heartbreaking and funny. How will Louise cope with the future and all that it has in store for her? Grab a copy for yourself and slip in between the covers to find out what Louise does next. I feel that this would make a great reading group read, with so much that can be discussed. None of us know how we would cope given all that fate threw at Louise. This would lead to some great discussions in my opinion. ~ Bernie Robinson, Wyres World Book Blog
Adam, who has lost someone close to him, struggling with self-identity and self-medicating substance abuse. Louise, dealing with a tricky childhood and her own loss plus the restlessness that can come from long term established relationships and motherhood. Even the secondary characters here are fun because who of us doesn't have an awful Imogen hanging around? I would recommend this book highly and look forward to seeing more of the author's work in future. ~ CC, Goodreads Review
Great book! The writing was superb - Louise reminded me of someone I knew, so I kept on feeling very emotional. It is a great read and despite the blurb, there are no stereotypes. It would have been easy for the author to sit back and write a sentimental but routine type of story. This is not - I look forward to reading more from this author. ~ Sue Ross, Amazon Customer Review
Read this little beauty in two days, one of those ‘oh my god’ page turners were you never know what’s comming next, loved this book. 5 Stars. ~ Faye Richards, Amazon Customer Review
This will go down as one of my favourite books in history. Emotional and engaging. The aftermath of childhood emotional neglect strikes again. Great characters and engaging story line with a superb twist. Loved it. Two things that could be much better though-cheaper kindle price and a better cover (it put me off to be honest).. shallow I know, but covers always have a habit of being the first thing you judge about a book. 5 stars. ~ Customer, Amazon Review
Easy to read, inspiring and twisting novel. An excellent read which got you thinking throughout; just when you thought you knew the storyline it took another turn. Can’t wait to read Nigel’s next book. 5 stars. ~ Sue M, Amazon Customer Review
I had to buy this book as it kept being recommended in my Facebook feed... Anyway, I loved it, read it in one day. Compelling reading - genuine and real. Really want to know what happens next...5 stars. ~ Mum of 3, Amazon Customer Review
What a fantastic book club read. There were so many twists and turns to the story, making it a fab book to review with so many discussion points. The ending was a shock, making me reflect about the book, thinking 'how sad, did that really have to happen!' Can't wait for the next book in April, already a must read. ~ Allie Baycroft, Amazon Customer Review
Fabulous page turner of a book that had me gripped to the last page. Good characters (none of them particularly likeable, which is actually very refreshing), and I think with introspection we can see some of ourselves in there somewhere. So many good reviews already not much left to say. I would def recommend. ~ Customer Review, Amazon
What is particularly enjoyable about this compelling drama is the lack of gratuitous and visceral imagery often employed by writers of thrillers as a cheap way to titillate. The emotional pain of the characters is the emphasis here and it is beautifully and intricately described and evolves over the many years that the book is set in. The integrity and care that the author employs to depict their inner turmoil is painstakingly beautiful and some of the passages are wonderfully intense purely for the depth and darkness of thought that they are able to convey. Read it and be truly transported. 5 Stars. ~ Miss S J L Bennett, Amazon Customer Review
This was not my normal genre. The story is an emotional rollercoaster and left me feeling a bit drained. Of course, that may be because I HAD to finish it rather than get to sleep. The story sucks you in, and captivates you until it spits you out, thoroughly exhausted. There is a little bit of everything: abandonment, betrayal, intrigue and suspense. The characters jump to life and sometimes I just wanted to shake some sense into them. Make sure you have time to finish reading... ~ Kamini M, Amazon Customer Review
Wow this book was emotional. From the first page you can feel the sadness and emotion coming off the characters. It’s a roller coaster ride through the story and there are parts of it you won’t see coming. I really enjoyed this, it’s well written and the characters really have depth. Fab read. ~ Georgina Roberts, Amazon Customer Review
5 stars. Wow! Couldn’t put this down! The story starts with Tom and Louise and then Tom is dead and it seems that he has given Louise and Adam permission to get together. Adam is Tom’s twin brother. They live the dream for a while, get married and have children but due to Louise’s past she never thinks she is good enough. Then one day in walks Jarvis and she becomes obsessed. I can’t say anymore without giving the plot away. You must read it and find out! A well written story with characters that you root for right up until the very end. ~ Amanda Sayer, Amazon Customer Review
This is one of the best books I have read in a long time. Just couldn't put it down, it had me gripped right to the end. Would really recommend this book to all readers! Big well done to the author and look forward to reading more from him. ~ Georgina, Amazon Customer Review
A well-written heartrending book which held my interest throughout. Keep the tissues handy!! ~ Pat Cavill, Goodreads Review
Five stars. I bought the kindle edition of the book when I happened to see it as a 99p offer, I thought I'd give it a try at such a low price. I'm so glad I did! Once I began reading it I became so immersed in the characters I couldn't put it down. This is a fantastic debut novel and I am so looking forward to reading the author's next one, which I will buy at full price. ~ Mrs S V Tomlinson, Amazon Customer Review
I read this in one sitting just couldn't put it down so well written with real characters i can't wait for the next book from this author highly recommend it. 5 stars. ~ Cassie Rivers, Amazon Customer Review
What a surprising book. It was totally different to what I was expecting to read and yet it works. The story centres around Louise and Adam after the death of Adams brother. If you are hoping to have likable characters you will be disappointed they are not especially so Louise. The slow unfolding of her back story really held my attention. This is not an uplifting book but hang in there, it is well worth the read. This is a first novel by Nigel Jay Cooper an author I am sure we will be seeing more of. ~ Joanne Farley, NetGalley
Terrific tale (I must get out more if all of that is going on in Brighton!) and wonderfully well written. Bravo! ~ Guy Dudney, Amazon customer review
Refreshingly original. This is a truly entertaining novel. Such mature writing with powerful observations of characters and human nature. All the elements are in abundance for a cracking page turner - plus it's a unique story too. ~ R Piatt, Amazon customer review
Intense and thoughtful, charming and funny, this beautifully written book kept me guessing at every turn of the page. With characters so perfectly flawed that they are easily relatable, I was drawn into an emotional journey alongside these people that I grew to care about. And when a talented writer gives you characters you love, it's impossible to put the book down until you know how their story ends! Wonderful debut novel, a gripping read and highly recommended. I can't wait for the next one! ~ Claire Dixon, Amazon customer review
Gripped me from the start, I couldn't put the book down. The characters were fantastically ordinary but developed in the most interesting and unexpected ways. The storyline was written so well that it made the most unacceptable events become completely acceptable. Really, really enjoyed this book. I can't wait for the next one. ~ E L Ham, Amazon customer review
This book will break your heart. If you can't handle intense emotions, stay away from it. Without trying to give much of the story away and avoiding repeating the blurb, one of the things I liked the most about the story is how Nigel Jay Cooper takes a challenging risk in this novel. He dares to reverse the traditional roles in a marriage and explores the different struggles parenthood can bring to a couple, and to each spouse. He goes deep in character development and introspection under both perspectives. Are we sick people if we can't instantly love our children? Does a man become weak and ordinary by taking a domestic duty? What about our sex drive and needs?Perhaps my biggest challenge was to set my preconceived ideas aside and allow the characters to be without my judgment; to be a silent witness of the hopes and sorrows of these flawed people. Grief and loss are perhaps the main themes of the story. But so is hope, and trust, and acceptance. The plot is intriguing, and it won't let go. The story is told parts by Louise, parts by Adam. There are also several interludes. Each interlude reveals a bit more of the inevitable end, and I couldn't find the willpower to stop reading. The story comes with unexpected and original twists, and I loved them. Brilliant! I didn't think there was any power in the world that could keep me away from watching a fresh, "out of the oven" episode of Game of Thrones. That was until last night when I couldn't stop reading this book. I had the urgency to know how the story ended. It was a desperate crave. Who cares if Jon Snow lives? I needed to know what happened to Louise, Adam and Jarvis. It couldn't wait. I wanted to phone Cooper and demand explanations. That's how emotionally involved I became. Insane! All I've done today is tell my friends they need to read the book so we can talk about it. You will need someone to discuss this story. It certainly makes an excellent bookclub selection! I received an ARC through NetGalley and Roundfire Books in exchange of an honest review. Thank you! ~ Michelle Downs, https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/1629431676?book_show_action=false&from_review_page=1
Louise is devastated when her lover Tom dies unexpectedly. Well it was unexpected for her, he knew he was dying. She finds love marriage and kids with his twin brother Adam and life carries on in quite an unremarkable way until Jarvis arrives in town. Louise finds herself instantly attracted to him, and Adam seems to enjoy having him around as well but Jarvis has a secret and the effects might be quite devastating. This is my first book by this author but it won’t be my last. The characters were easy to love and hate and the secret... oh my! ~ Jazz, Amazon Customer Review
Beat the Rain was an interesting read about a modern day love relationship and the consequences of people's actions. It was emotional, raw and very true to what happens nowadays. At first I really struggled with the plot, I didn't like where it was going and I honestly thought I wouldn't be able to get through it. But then it all clicked into place, Nigel Cooper weaved a fabulous story with some very flawed characters. There were a few little twists to the story that I wasn't expecting... I loved Nigel's braveness to the book, he has produced a moving and true tale that a lot of people would connect with. I didn't particularly like Louise, I felt sorry for Adam at times but I feel this is what Nigel wanted us to feel. The ending surprised me which is always a good thing! I will look out for more books by Nigel in the future. ~ Katie Jones, Amazon Customer Review
"Beat the Rain" is a truly atmospheric, intriguing and emotional book with quite a unique plot, that is beautifully written by debut novel writer Nigel Jay Cooper. Well worth a read, I'd happily recommend it and I'd certainly read more by this author again. ~ Miriam Smith, Amazon Customer Review
Five stars. A very interesting and intriguing story that keeps you wondering what is going to happen next. Makes you want to read to the end and think about your own life stories. ~ Rebecca, Amazon Customer Review
Great read, couldn't put it down, wanted to get to the end but didn't want it to finish. ~ Amazon Customer, Amazon.co.uk
Interesting view into a marriage between two troubled people, both difficult to root for. Despite this, their story is compelling and heartbreaking. Insight into desire, needs, relationships within a family, and the choices we make and how they define us. ~ Book Girl, Goodreads Review
4 stars. Nigel Jay Cooper delves into the far corners of his characters' minds and brings us there with him to twist and turn in their emotions and thought processes.. We find ourselves making the same decisions as the story progresses because there doesn't seem to be a way out of the inevitable truths. I would have preferred a bit more eroticism, but that's just me. Enjoy the humanity in this novel of raw experiences. ~ Colin Gruchy, NetGalley
“Don't try to beat the rain. Just accept that sometimes you're going to get wet.” Nooo I am heartbroken. This book's plot? Well this book's plot is 50 shades of messed up... and when I say “50 shades of messed up” I actually have a positive connotation in mind. Messed up is what's happening to the characters and messed up is real, messed up is life itself, no sugar coating, and I love that. Grief. Multifaceted response to loss. Not only emotional response but physical, cognitive, behavioral, social, philosophical dimensions. Curious enough almost every book that I have read in the last weeks addressed grief in a way or another. How much can we blame on grief? Can you consider grief as a mitigating circumstance? It is very tempting to say/think that Adam and Louise's problems started with grief; that grief pushed them in that original situation. But in my view that means stopping at the outer layer. I see so much in their background, I see emotional abuse therefore lack of self confidence, I see lack of growth. “Perhaps that's how all relationships end, not with a bang but with the accumulation of millions of tiny moments that matter, going unnoticed by one partner or the other because life gets in the way. And then one day you both stop trying to make the other one notice anymore. And that's it, the slow death is in motion. The rest is entropy.” Perhaps... But what about instead of trying to make the partner notice just communicate it to him/her?! Let her/him in “I want to tell you everything, I want us to open up again” - preventable tragedy? Perhaps … “Things are rarely one-sided” - let's say I mostly agree, but I still blame Louise. Yes, I can give her mitigating circumstances but that's up to a point. From there on it is only her fault. She really had so many moments to redeem herself, to grow, to communicate! PS: “Underneath their smiles, beneath their public 'I'm all right' grins, most people's lips are all chewed and cracked and bloody” ** Book received on NetGalley for an honest review. ~ Catalina Salgau, Foreign Girl Reviews
Darn BEAT THE RAIN for making me feel too many feelings. Bleak, unapologetically honest, and filled with shocking plot twists, this isn't one for those looking for an easy breezy summer read. Don't get me wrong, I mean that in the best way possible. The characters were all very clever, in that you can't help but empathize with them despite not being able to like them. The writing was beautiful, with every line sounding 'quotable', and always kept me engaged. Unfortunately it didn't turn out the way I'd hoped, but I can't elaborate without spoiling! Would definitely recommend to anyone who likes gritty and emotional realistic fiction. **I received this book through a Goodreads Giveaway** ~ Maria Johnson, https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/1679104813
From the first chapter I wanted to know...what the hell was happening to this woman? I wasn't even sure I liked her, but I gave a shit, I really cared about how she would get through her experience. I felt uneasy and uncomfortable and I couldn't stop... Nigel Jay Cooper's characters feel like people you know, or at least people you thought you knew. Their stories are those of human kind; complex, fragile, deceptive, darkly funny...and real. I'd not had much chance to read since having my baby but this book reinvigorated my passion for reading. Can't wait for Cooper's next book, or perhaps for the rights to be picked up for Beat the Rain, I'd love to see this on screen... What did I think? I think I really enjoyed this read. Nigel has the words that's for sure, and he has stories too. No-one but Adam was likeable to me but I still rooted for them all, I wanted a happy ending..please,please sugar coat this ending for me Nigel, I thought..Obviously i cant say here whether he did or not, but ether way nothing is a disappointment. A few things that brought it down a star for me..I felt it a good bit to long and the lives as they unfolded to separated, I kept thinking that, wowsa, Mr. Nigel could have got 3 good books out of this one story: I want to read all about Tom and Louise and the ending would have been where Adam came in. A book about Louise, her background and what then happens when she meets Jarvis. A book about Adam and his marriage to Louise and then meeting Jarvis. Well worth a read though this one and I will no doubt read his next one. ~ Malou Schött, Goodreads https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/1625721685?book_show_action=true&from_review_page=1
This book takes you on Louise’s journey after the death of her lover. How does she survive? How can life go on? Even going outside on a trip to the post office is so very gut-wrenching for her. Tom, her lover, her best friend, her confidant is dead. What can she do without him to make her feel whole and happy? She decides to marry, not just any man, but Tom’s twin. Don’t want to give to much away. Suffice it to say this book will make you laugh, cry, and reflect on what life really is all about. ~ Annette Bjorkman, NetGalley: www.netgalley.com
Just finished Beat the Rain by Nigel Cooper and can safely say I absolutely loved it...had that dilemma with all great books of wanting to find out what happens but not wanting to finish reading it, all the main characters flawed but identifiable with and some real twists and turns of fate which didn't see coming..themes of loss, love and betrayal and some quotes which really rang true.Recommended for book clubs everywhere as plenty to discuss.. Pre order on Amazon now, you won't regret it. ~ Katie MacFarlane, https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/1622482057?book_show_action=false&from_review_page=1
An indication of a terrific book is the inability to put it down, coupled with the need to tell *everyone* about it. Truly heartbreaking but with moments of wonderfully light humour. I feel wrung out! Cannot recommend this book highly enough. Buy two copies & give one to a friend so you can talk about it as soon as you've finished. You will need to! Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant! ~ Emma Dallos, https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/1588621145?book_show_action=false&from_review_page=1#comment_form
This got me hooked from the very first page and kept interested till the last. A wonderful read with an unexpected ending, I would highly recommend it. ~ Natasha Edwards, NetGalley: www.netgalley.com
I loved this book! It's intriguing, original and has a great twist. The characters are all interesting , made even more so because none of them turned out to be particularly likeable. Beat the Rain is both dark and funny at times which is a great combination.Fabulous first novel which I thoroughly recommend. Nigel Jay Cooper is clearly a very talented new author and I hope he writes more! ~ Kate Rogers, https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/1600445480?book_show_action=false&from_review_page=1
I was going to say I really enjoyed this book, but enjoyed is the wrong word but I was hooked early on especially after the first "interlude". It's not a comforting novel but that's why I liked it. It felt very real and the characters were too in a flawed, challenged way. ~ Joanna Jones, Goodreads Review
In Beat The Rain Nigel Jay Cooper gave us an emotional and raw portrait of vulnerable, flawed people who try hard to overcome grief and their insecurities. It's not an easy read but it's so compelling and beautiful and I couldn't put it down. Loved it! Louise, unlucky Louise. Abandoned at young age by her mother, bullied at school, lost her dad to cancer at 16, her partner, Tom, dies. Nothing seems to work for her, nothing or no one seems to be able to fix her. And then there's Adam, Tom's twin. Their relationship wild, seemingly forbidden but also strangely liberating. Adam. Adam who's always been 'and Adam', always part of a duo. Always in somebody's shadow. They're so wrong together but they're also really good together. At the beginning it's their grief that connects them, the strange wrongness of being together after Tom - they make it work the best they can, children come along, life happens and they stay together. Their love is not perfect, not fairy tale like, it's the mundane everyday kind of love but it's love nonetheless. Then Jarvis arrives in their lives. Charming and handsome, kind and caring. Jarvis who brings Louise and Adam's marriage to the brink. They both break, their lives completely unravel. ~ Maddie, Amazon Customer Review
Brilliantly drawn characters even though they are not very likeable. Crystal clear description of emotions and tensions in the story. Felt on edge all the time! ~ Mary Louise, Goodreads Review
A very well written book which kept me hooked throughout. Beat the Rain is a compelling story of love, loss, insecurity, passion and unrequited love and although it has quite a complex plot, it's very easy to read. There are many surprises - including the ending - which ensure the reader is kept entertained and wanting more. Highly recommended. ~ Ange Goldsmith, Amazon Customer Review
4 Stars. Everything Louise is as a person stems from the lonely child she was, listening to her parents arguing. Her father made her feel safe after her mother walked out but he dies. Promiscuous, self deluded confusing desire with love she falls for Tom who somehow bequeathed her, on his death, to his twin Adam who has always felt in his twins shadow. Less worthy, less loved, less lovable. This unpromising beginning to their relationship and marriage underpins subsequent events and when Jarvis, like an incendiary bomb, is thrown into the mix ... Or mess... their lives explode and the fallout is spectacular. Louise is deluded misguided and selfish, Adam is a bit of a saint and weak. If ever a couple needed relationship couple counselling it is these two. Louise is irritating and hard to like. Adam deserved a better life and wife. It is a modern story about modern lives and the mess people make when there is little communication. There were times when reading I wanted to bash Adam and Lou's heads together and say sort it out. Some echoes of a good David Nicholls here and there. I was thinking of his book US. This story explores choices and crossroad moments and missed communication. Here and there a bit too much introspection for me which in places slowed the action down but a good read well written and with something to say about modern relationships. ~ Jaqui Petar, Goodreads Review
A great read. I couldn't put it down and finished it within four days - five stars. ~ Samantha Collins, Amazon Customer Review
5 stars... I read this book on my holidays. Fantastic read. I struggle with reading as my concentration is poor, but this had me gripped. You really get to feel the characters and their emotions. Brilliant. ~ Rachel C, Amazon customer review
What a strange, sad, interesting read. It wasn't what I was anticipating - which is probably a good thing! Told through chapters alternating between Adam's perspective and Louise's, Beat the Rain, is the story of a relationship that travels through the mountains and valleys. What waits for Adam and Louise at the end of the winding roads? ~ Beth Peninger, Goodreads Review
Great style - I got curious after reading a review about this book. It was a decent read at the time when I wanted a modern novel. ~ Dorita, Amazon Customer Review
An Intriguing dive into the meaning of relationships and the way we use them to define ourselves, with a twist. ~ Amazon Customer, Amazon.co.uk
I liked this book which is essentially a story of a marriage and all the ways two people make themselves miserable. There were some interesting twists I didn't see coming and some good writing that was thought-provoking. Louise is really awful and it's hard to root for her, but Adam isn't perfect either. No spoilers on plot details, but I will say this is a sad book... Definitely makes you think about the choices you make and why you make them. ~ BookGirlonGoodreads, Goodreads Review
This novel slowly builds up its believable protagonists, with their strengths, flaws, and eccentricities. We gradually become attached to them as the tragic tale unfolds. I recommend immersing yourself into this book, if you like a good drama with credible characters. ~ Andrew Cairns, Amazon Customer Review
I never write reviews but felt passionate about Beat The Rain. Wow! What a read...what an emotional journey... compelling, unexpected and captivating. Beautifully written. Can highly recommend this book... loved it! Can't wait to see more from this author. ~ Amazon Customer Review
A well done debut novel. The more so since it is a male author writing primarily within a female character without minimizing the depth of her emotions. ~ Robin Merman , Net Galley
Five stars. Nigel's description of people's thoughts as they suffer time periods when their love commitments are scattered or fickle resonated. It reminded me that communication is key, even if all you know is that you don't know what you want. ~ Z, Amazon Customer Review
This story was well written. The way the family dynamic starts and builds to the end is something married people can understand. For instance, you might my little tired of your husband but you still love him. The main characters in the story are sad but you as a reader you feel for the family. ~ Billy Jean Williams, NetGalley (https://s2.netgalley.com/catalog/book/87447)
This book was well written, and I found it refreshing that a male author could actually write a female part so well. Many men really simplify a woman's brain and how we think and I think this author captured a real woman very well. Impressive! For a debut novel it's an admirable job, and he doesn't seem to fall into any of the traps that new writers seem to - stunted or uncomfortable dialogue, repetition, or premature endings as if they are eager to finish the book without going through the entire story. The dialogue is well written and realistic, the story is complete and he trusts us to remember the story without telling it repeatedly. Wow!!!!!!This book is amazing!!!This book gripped my attention from the very beginning. I love the different twists , and couldn't believe the surprise ending!!! Just amazing!!! “I loved reading this. It’s some of the most moving and vulnerable writing I’ve read in a long time, searingly honest and I found myself going back to re-read certain passages again and again.” ~ Caroline Jory, www.nigeljaycooper.com
This is one of my favourite books I’ve read in a long time. Be prepared because once you start, it’s one of those stay-awake-all-night-til-you-finish-it books. And you’ll be glad you did. The storyline had me hooked from the start, but what makes this such a rare find is how the author captures the day to day minutiae inside a relationship that could so easily be our own. This insight into what’s going on around us, at times heart-wrenching and other times very funny, leaves you feeling glad to be human and alive. I found myself re-reading passages just to remind myself of the beauty that lies in those seemingly ordinary moments we can so easily brush aside. Highly recommend it. ~ C. “I really loved the depth of feeling – raw emotions and honesty. It’s very emotive and most importantly for me, you write characters I care about. That’s what keeps me reading a book.” ~ Claire Dixon, www.nigeljaycooper.com
I read a review copy of Beat The Rain...Wow, an emotional roller coaster with some unexpected twists. Raw, painful emotions laid bare. Some parts made me laugh out loud, others cringe as it dawned what was coming. Oh how I loved the dinner party, everyone knows an 'Imogen'... And an 'Alice' for that matter too. I wait with baited breath for your next book. ~ Clare Seel, https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/1575703809?book_show_action=false&from_review_page=1
Gripping storytelling from the very start, this book draws you in and keeps you engaged, often on the edge of your seat, right till the bittersweet end. Beat the Rain is a wonderfully written, fantastically pacey debut novel from an author with a truly compelling insight into the human condition and all its frustrating and often cruel twists and turns. The book is rich in characters, atmosphere and the element of surprise. It's serious and often sad but also laugh-out-loud funny all at the same time. A touching and sensitive portrayal of the interconnected mess of everyday life and love. One of those reads that leaves you wanting more. ~ Siobhan Kennedy, Channel 4 News
Intriguing, painfully honest and beautifully written. ~ Nina De La Mer, author, 4.a.m and Layla
Emotional rollercoaster, psychological thriller – Beat the Rain ticks both these boxes for me. I was sucked in from the start. The sensitive characterization, level of observation and Nigel’s ability to not only touch on the plethora of issues that come from the train smash of life, death, family and relationships but also express so effectively the emotional highs and lows was compelling throughout. Absolutely compelling. ~ Caroline Follett, daughter-in-law of author Ken Follett
Beat The Rain is an atmospheric and neatly paced first novel...a refreshingly honest intelligence at work. ~ Charlotte Gann, poet, The Long Woman, Noir (forthcoming)
