Roger Cologne is an Alpha Boy. He has all the trappings of success - the looks, car, flat, and a high-powered job. He doesn't do relationships. He is a collector of conquests without consequence. By unexpectedly becoming a father and receiving redundancy he discovers there is more to life. He is forced to start his personal development journey. He seeks to learn more about himself as well as entering a meaningful relationship. By doing so, he moves towards becoming an Alpha Wolf.
Written by Professor Nick Clements, one of the world's foremost experts on masculinity and rites of passage, this compelling story allows us to gain understanding and insight into the modern man's journey. Combining humour, wisdom and emotionally charged stories the book explains how a lot of men think and experience the separate worlds of work, relationships and feelings. It is full of advice and guidance for us all, and incorporates exercises and life style development work which has been practiced by hundreds of people over the last 20 years.

The Alpha Wolf is both novel and real account - inspired by his own contact with a remarkable healer. The main character, Roger, is a prototype of city ambition and narcissism, who is basically concerned with what he can get for himself. It's both amusing and dangerously real but Roger is no match for the forces of transformation that come to meet him, especially in the guise of his daughter, Saskia, but also in his own slow fall from perfectionist ( and opportunistic ) grace, which Clements narrates with consummate skill, page for page; remarkable in a first novel ~ Caduceus, Simon Best
'The Mark of a man is not found in how he handles success and acclaim, it resides in how he handles failure and vulnerability'. That message is at the core of this novel. The Alpha Wolf tracks the journey of one such man, Roger. From being what I call an 'alpha boy' - laddish, successful, ruthless, without a conscience - through disappointment and vulnerability, to finding himself and becoming an 'alpha wolf' - caring, compassionate, willing to commit to a long term relationship. A journey most women want their men to undertake. It describes a typical arc of development for a modern man, he makes his job the centre of his life, he is financially rewarded for his dedication, he aspires to a culturally understood and encouraged 'successful lifestyle' This rapid ascension towards acclaim, ambition and greed almost inevitably leads to a plateau of discontent and disappointment. In the book, Brian becomes his teacher, he is a beggar, ugly, dirty, and therefore, in Roger's terms, a man with no future, no value. However, in his deep despair Roger realises he actually needs what Brian has. Brian has no money, but he has a deep spiritual discipline and belief which sustains him in a completely different way. ~ , Watkins Mind Body Spirit
The Alpha Wolf is an essential read for women who want to know if it is possible for their men to change from immature lads into mature men. As the book illustrates, it won't be a simple or easy journey, but it is worthwhile. The bumpy ride Roger makes from career orientated selfish user of humanity, to a caring and considerate human being is pertinent to us all. The skills he learns and shares along the way are relevant to both women and men. A funny and moving 'male tale' to accompany your 'chick lit'. ~ Alice Grist - Author of 'The High Heeled Guide to Enlightenment'
In his book 'The Alpha Wolf,' Professor Nick Clements asks a question of timeless importance: 'How do we really connect with true masculinity and its essential rites of passage?' It's clear that he has also lived the question, in both ordinary and extraordinary ways, making this more than an ordinary book, but a pure expression of the search for the most authentic answer. You'll discover insights, reflections and ancient wisdom on every page. ~ Anaiya Sophia - Author of 'Womb Wisdom' and 'Sacred Sexual Union', Womb Wisdom
A funny, educational tale, and just what young and older men need to read to help them along their life journey. Full of instructive stories about the good and bad times. How men can have more by possessing less and by really being with other men. ~ Rose Rouse - Mother to a son, writer, journalist, PR
The Alpha Wolf is the story of a man's awakening from being totally self-centred to growing in compassionate awareness. A journey of someone in rigid control of his life, a seeker after casual sex, a user and discarder of others, to the realization of an aching emptiness that was not being touched by his materialistic life. Nick Clements builds a picture that draws you in to the story and leads you on to find out what happens to this misogynistic, arrogant young man as he grows and matures. He crafts the tale well leading to the inevitable crack-up and the reassessment of his life. It is a strong story of the redemption of the worst type of 'masculinity.' In the final part of the book, Nick gives the tools for life reassessment, 'The Practice,' that he has used and taught for many years. These are wise words that ground the story in a useful and integrative practice for body, mind and spirit. ~ Revd Don MacGregor - Interfaith Officer, St David's Diocese, Fishguard
Nick Clements writes out of a natural knowing, born of years of experience of deep soul reality. He also has an ability to self-reflect that allows him to turn that experience into a story that concerns all of us and relates to where we are going at this time of change and transparency. He is in all senses a 'reliable narrator'. ~ Jay Ramsay - Poet, Psychotherapist and Healer
Nick has penned a real break-through book on masculinity. I love his style and verve, this is a must read for anyone investigating the role of masculinity in today's confusing world. It is not easy to find mentors such as Nick and I urge men and women to take the time to read the book. ~ Mel Carlile, CEO Mindbodyspirit Festival, London
