Open the book and jump into something that catches your interest. Dig in and explore. These experience have built-in skills practice that have children begging to do more. When children do not realize they are practicing skills because they are happily engaged and having fun, they are developing conceptual understanding along the way. Win-win! All respectable Maths teachers have a stash of their own favourite puzzles up their sleeves. These will get wheeled out at various times- perhaps it's at the end of the lesson when you have a few spare moments, or towards the end of term when you need something to occupy the minds of young Mathematicians who may be distracted by the lure of the holidays that are looming or perhaps it's simply to invigorate a class who are needing an injection of geekiness or problem-solving or puzzling. The best of these problems will be "low entry, high ceiling" (everyone can understand them because they're posed simply yet they have oodles of Mathsy goodness lurking under the surface). Gord is probably the most creative person I know. This collection of puzzles provide a wellspring of activities for classrooms, math circles and homes. They are good for a large range of grades and good for both advanced and less advanced kids. That’s because their difficulty can be customized. The cute animalistic themes help engage kids who are not comfortable with bare math problems. Gord has written a very special math book, one that deserves wide distribution.
