I thoroughly enjoyed Daniel Ingram-Brown’s conclusion to The Firebird Chronicles. I’ve been a fan of the trilogy since the first instalment was released, and would highly recommend reading the first two books. The Firebird Chronicles is an engaging read for children and adults alike. Through the Uncrossable Boundary begins where The Nemesis Charm leaves off. Scoop and Fletcher must brave new perils as the world as they know it comes to an end. Gigan Ticks roam Fullstop Island and a mysterious sickness affects those closest to the Apprentice Adventurers. Their mission will take them to unchartered territories and cross their paths with new friends and adversaries. The thrill of adventure and daring is palpable, whilst remaining accessible to a wide audience. The empowering message that began in Rise of the Shadow Stealers continues to weave through the final instalment of the trilogy. Scoop and Fletcher have been encouraged to find their own way by the mentors throughout the series and reach new heights of self-awareness as they continue to forge their own path. These characters have been expertly developed by Daniel Ingram-Brown. Scoop and Fletcher seem to walk between the pages as living beings, inviting the readers into the fantastic world they call home. The final chapters were handled with sensitivity and were an emotionally satisfying conclusion, whilst remaining accessible to a young audience. I look forward to Daniel Ingram-Brown’s next work. Overall, Through the Uncrossable Boundary easily deserves a five stars rating. 5 Stars What an ending! Big applause to Daniel for tackling issues of mental health, grief, and growing up. The fantasy aspects of the book, full stop island, blotting academy, the whole world is just so rich and fantastic. To then take the fantasy into reality, which is a hard task anyway, and to give the characters such deep complexity it kept me gripped to the last line. 5 Stars An incredible ending to a magical trio of books. I was lucky enough to read a copy of the third and final book in the Firebird Chronicles trilogy, Through the Uncrossable Boundary before its release. I had read the first two books in the series and fell immediately in love with the story, characters, and this magical, literary world the books present. So it was with an eager yet hesitant heart that I started to read the final tome in the series. I knew an epic adventure awaited me, but that also meant the inevitable bittersweet end of a fantastic book series that I really truly enjoyed would finally be coming to an end. Through the Uncrossable Boundary is a return to the adventures of siblings Scoop and Fletcher, Apprentice Adventurers at Blotting’s Academy on Fullstop Island. Their world has been taken over by a sleeping sickness, with only a handful of people still not under the curse. Grizelda, the villainess of the previous two books, awaits her time to take over Fullstop Island and their world, and follows their every move, along with her army of Red Hawks. Scoop and Fletcher know that their quest is to awaken everyone who has fallen asleep (including the Storyteller, the Princess, and the wise, clever, and lovable Yarnbard) and save their world from being unwritten, but to do this, they have to cross the Threshold of their world and into unknown waters (literally). Like the last half of the Harry Potter series, it seems like the first two books in the series were almost just the preparations for Fletcher's and Scoop’s biggest adventure yet. With the help of the Dark Pirate, his crew and their friends from Blotting’s, the third book picks up right where we left off in The Nemesis Charm and sets sail straight into their quest. From there we follow our Apprentice Adventurers as they leave Fullstop Island for the first time and sail away to lands, cities, and danger beyond their home, all for the quest of saving everyone in their world. But their world is somehow tied to another, very familiar world, in a beautifully interwoven way that provides a powerful emotional tie into the storyline that is needed to equal out the amount of action in the first half of the book. The second half of the book may not be as exciting and thrilling as the first part, but the emotional poignancy of the bonds and connections a mother and daughter share and an undertone of the meaning of faith provide something deeper and more meaningful than one would expect from a children’s series. The writing shines the most with the author's descriptions of the Fullstop Island characters (both friends and foes), faraway lands, and magical and colorful ventures. An encounter early in the book with the Fable Fish, is particularly breathtaking in its vivid imagery. It’s almost like the reader was there, witnessing that wondrous event. The nods to notable literary characters, books, and even grammar are still sprinkled heavily throughout the book, as it was in the other two books in the series, is a clever and fun wink to the book's readers. The author can also deftly switch from one scene of exciting, swashbuckling action to another scene filled with touching emotion and still make the whole story feel seamlessly connected. There are so many different layers, but it all works as one and pushes the story forward to its moving, profound, and beautiful ending. I myself was incredibly sad to see the series end, but I could not have been more moved and pleased by the conclusion of the final book. It was everything you could want in the last volume of a trilogy: it has adventure, wonder, peril, emotion, and heart, and it delivered that and so much more. The entire series though, not just Through the Uncrossable Boundary, is a lovely tribute to the world of books, words, and stories and their power in us and our lives as well. Readers of all ages will want to join Fletcher and Scoop on an adventure, or even become an Apprentice Adventurer themselves at Blotting’s Academy, so they can be around their fellow bookworms and grammar enthusiasts and be in good company while enjoying a tankard of Noveltwist. Through the Uncrossable Boundary is a sweeping conclusion to an adventure that introduced us to Scoop and Fletcher and their literary, story-centric world of Fullstop Island and beyond. Through the Uncrossable Boundary envelops the reader in the same entirely unique world created throughout this series. It is a world of wonder and beauty, of wordplay and clever anecdotes, of extremely talented adventurers and their fearsome rivals. I have loved the first and second books in The Firebird Chronicles series and the feeling of total nostalgia brought on by them. However, Through the Uncrossable Boundary takes the magical and brings it so close to home you can feel it in the very pages. As always, I don’t want to spoil the plethora of twists and turns this book takes you on its enthralling journey through seas of singing fable fish and treacherous beast-infested waters. Nonetheless, I can promise you that every page is as compelling as the next. As always, Ingram-Brown’s pure talent for description causes your mind to manifest the entire world he creates and you can feel yourself right there alongside him (and Fletcher and Scoop, of course). This is a book for all ages- from the young, inquisitive mind to the adult longing to feel the excitement that only a wonderful book can evoke. (Wonderfully Bookish) Often, trilogies can go downhill with each book — but other times, a trilogy can stay strong until the very last page. The Firebird Chronicles by Daniel Ingram-Brown is one of those series. The well-crafted stories feel unique, and the characters feel so real! A lot of characters in other MG stories can often feel unbelievable, either with the skills they have, the things they do or even the way they speak, but Fletcher, Scoop and all of the other characters feel like they could be real children going on a real adventure (but with a touch of added magic and fantastical creatures). I read the first book in the series, Rise of the Shadow Stealers, in 2016 and since then it’s been a heck of a ride. I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to get into the first book but the story developed in a way that made it engaging and dramatic, and I couldn’t put it down. Then the second one, The Nemesis Charm, came along and continued the story in ways I didn’t expect, taking me on a journey through fantastical lands and exciting stories. In the third book, the story takes another turn and feels even more unique than the previous two books. It combines the world we’ve come to know from the first two books and our world, as Fletcher and Scoop cross over the Uncrossable Boundary and risk everything. The vivid imagery adds to the excitement, and the story comes together with a profound and beautiful conclusion to a great trilogy. The Uncrossable Boundary wraps up the story in a way that feels satisfying, like everything is wrapped up well with no important questions left unanswered. Why read this series? If you love fantastical worlds, and even better—a world full of literary references (the main location is called Fullstop Island, and Fletcher and Scoop attend an academy that trains story characters), this series is for you. The descriptions help you picture the world and the characters so well, it feels like you’ve actually been to these magical places and met all of the characters! This is also a great series for you if you love children’s magical adventure series. (It definitely gave me some strong Harry Potter vibes.) 5 Stars I read this book earlier in the year, after reading and loving the first two books in the series, as well as the short stories that are also set in this world. I really enjoyed the final instalment to The Firebird Chronicles. The world building was so well fleshed out and the characters were all in their own way relatable and I enjoyed reading about all of them. I was really excited to see the story continue so just went straight on to book 3 and was not disappointed. Intriguing and brilliant This series is definitely not the average good vs evil fantasy fiction. The author has created something different and thought provoking.
