Synopsis

The first book on Iran to combine travelogue with in-depth historical reflection, The Last Tourist examines the heart of the Iranian Islamic mind, and looks at the threat to Irans cultural heritage by the present nuclear crisis. Iran, a cradle of Western civilization, may be destroyed by its main beneficiary, Western civilization. This travelogue tours Iran, exploring its rich history: the Achaemenians (Cyrus/Darius/Xerxes), the Sasanians, the Zoroastrian religion of 2,500 years ago; the Islamic period, the Safavids, and the Revolution which dethroned the Shah and made Iran an Islamic Republic. Hagger visits the well of the Hidden Imam, Ayatollah Khomeinis living rooms in Qom and Tehran, and the Shahs White Palace, highlighting the Islamic idea expressed through the architecture, tiles and calligraphy. Comparisons with Iraq and the potential havoc that may also engulf Irans cultural heritage is caught in a drive past the Iranian nuclear site at Natanz, surrounded by anti-aircraft guns. Nicholas Hagger is a cultural historian, philosopher, author and tourist.
