We have access to many tools to help us deal with the rising tide of anxiety and depression: psychotherapy, neuro-linguistic programming (NLP), cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), medication, meditation, positive affirmations. These methodologies are increasingly popular and have been able to bring some relief to many. But in terms of permanent, deep change, these options are sorely limited because they work solely with the conscious mind rather than with the underlying subconscious beliefs that drive our behavior. Recent research on the brain has revealed that we are only aware of 5% of our brain activity, while the other 95% is subconscious. So, unless we work with both our conscious mind as well as our subconscious mind, we may find some decrease in our pain, but we will continue to struggle.

Lisa Samet has a background in naturopathic medicine so it was a huge challenge when her son was diagnosed with leukaemia and had to be treated conventionally, an episode she describes in the first chapter of this very helpful book. While NLP and CBT can provide effective relief, they are limited in addressing only the conscious mind rather than underlying subconscious beliefs, memories and habits that drive our behaviour. Insights from neuroplasticity indicate that we can in fact change these deeper patterns, but our education system provides us with very little emotional wisdom and training. The central part of the book considers stories around key themes such as self-love, acceptance, responsibility and regret, sharing many examples of how it is possible to rewrite the inner narrative and transform its significance. Our challenges can be regarded as precisely what was required to develop our individual capacities and character. We can ask ourselves what lessons we learned and how we were able to grow. Self-reflection is also central to reinterpreting life history, for instance in relationships. I encourage you to buy this book. It is a refreshingly honest and provocative dialogue of healing from the inside out. Starting with the introduction’s opening passages, this book captivates while it teaches and informs.
