Spells are something that almost every magical practitioner utilises. Often when stepping into the world of magic and spellcasting for the first time, it can be difficult to understand how to navigate crafting your first spell and what steps to take towards building your own personal practice. Spellcraft and Spellwork is a practical guide on the inner and outer workings of spellcasting. This book brings the reader back to the basics, and introduces everything you need to know about crafting and working spells. The way in which each magic worker will craft their spell will vary greatly. Ariana Carrasca provides explanations of the foundations of spellcasting in a way which highlights the practitioner's own personal experience and to help them build a craft which is truly unique to them.

This is a book I’d recommend to all new practitioners - it’s well organized and written, easy to navigate, and the extensive bibliography gives the reader further reading options. It includes a brief history of magick, and acknowledges that there have been some influential but problematic people in that history. From there you dive into the different kinds of magical theory and practices, including exercises and guides for practicing and creating your own spells. I greatly appreciate that the models of magic include questions to help the reader find what path best suits them. The practical magic chapter was fairly well fleshed out, even though this is meant to be a quick introduction and guide. The foundational magical practices section may have been my favorite, as it emphasizes the importance of protection and grounding when performing magick. The next few chapters are spell focused, including one with a few spells the reader can try. Overall, a great beginner’s guide, or one to keep around as a quick reference. ~ Lily, Goodreads
Don’t be misguided by the title, this is not another offering of lists of correspondences, pages of ready to use spells, with unfamiliar ingredients! The author guides the reader with an overview of why to do spells, instructions of how to put this together, in a way that is meaningful and relevant to the reader. She also discusses what is known about the history of spell craft. Interspersed throughout are suggested exercises, for the reader to try, enabling them to develop their own intuition and magical practice. There is a chapter on what to do with your working afterwards which is very useful, and she does share in the final chapter a few elegantly simple spells from her own practice. A useful book for anyone undertaking spellwork. ~ Heather Jane Dewhurst, Amazon
FINALLY a good beginner witchcraft book! It is well researched and encourages the beginner to think for themselves and craft their own practice. ~ Ivy Corvus, GoodReads
Ari has written this in a simple yet well documented manner. I discovered things about the origins of magic and its definitions, its facets, that took me years and a myriad of books to piece together. She approached this as a proper full on explanation, bit by bit that builds from the foundations up. It's the perfect pyramid of knowledge that gives someone every basic principle to understand the way magic and spells work and what are the points to focus on whereas we might get so confused and distracted by all the possibilities all the time. It also comes with exercises, very practical ones and because Ari has read all those books, even for simple, supposedly basic exercises such as Grounding and Centering, she brings ways to approach that that are something new yet simple and for a skeptically inclined witch like me a wonderful way to steep into what I recognise as reality. ~ A G, Goodreads
I was gifted a copy of this book to review but these thoughts are my own. This book is small but it packs a punch, it's full of incredible information and spells how to craft a spell and how to dispose of a spell afterwards! I highly recommend this book and I have a longer video review which will be on my YouTube channel @beverleybutterfly go and pre-order this book you won't be disappointed. ~ Beverley Butterfly, GoodReads
Finally, in a modern market perhaps over-saturated with esoteric titles that seek to impress the reader in some way, a book with an authentic voice, which, far from seeking to impress the reader, inspires them to read and take each piece of advice to nurture their practice. Spellcraft and Spellwork: A Guide to the Magical Practice of Spells is an excellent introduction to understanding the basics of magic and spellcasting, how to cast all kinds of spells, and the work behind it, from the definition of types of magic to the creation and use of each spell for your own empowering. Ariana Carrasca is naturally eloquent, disciplined in her teaching, and patient with the reader, guiding them through each step of spellwork and practice. This book will be pivotal in training and teaching many new followers and seekers of the Craft. ~ Elhoim Leafar, tarotist, dowser, author of Dream Witchery: Folk Magic, Recipes & Spells from South America for Witches & Brujas
This book gifts to the reader a grounded, accessible, and in-depth overview into the very foundation of magical practice. This is not your typical spell book. Here you will not find mindless magical directions and impersonal correspondences; rather the tools to create your own. Insightful, sensitive, and tremendously well researched; Ariana Carrasca guides you through the intrinsically personal experience that is spell craft. This is a must read for deepening the “why” behind the “how” in the realm of magic. ~ Hannah Hawthorn, creator of Simply Witched and author of The Magick of Birthdays: Rituals, Spells and Recipes for Honouring your Solar Return
