I really liked this book. Meditation – Rachel Patterson At the very start the author sets out her intention for this book “ an introductory... that will hopefully open up the varied and diverse world of meditation” and it does exactly that. What follows, in easy to read, humours chapters,is information about types of meditation practises, ways of working, things to look out for and above all ways of making meditation your own. As an introductory book the author wants to show how diverse mediation can be and the ways it can be fitted into and used to explore the many pagan practices people are using today. Early on the author gives some very reassuring advise “the meditation space does not necessarily mean silence” … “know that you don't have that you don't have to meditate for four hours straight” Practical advise that will reassure the novice or indeed new starter to meditation and through out the chapters the author is keen to make the point Breathing is everything – find what works for you The Crystal meditation section is comprehensive and varied- could be worth a read even if you are not meditating with crystals. The book also contains as well as examples of guided work with crystals , visualization and high pathways for the more experienced but written in such a way as to make it clear what can be accomplished The author uses modern technology to aid meditation, recommending the internet and phone apps for the tech savvy audience who are looking for ways to reconnect with themselves. There is a really good range of guided mediations which you could record onto your phone and listen to via head phones on your daily commute, unless you are driving of course- in which case save it for the lunch break. And anyone who recommends cake after meditation is someone you should really listen too. The author even makes the tea! ( well she provides a whole chapter of recipes you just need to add water) This book is written with warmth and humour by someone who clearly has a deep knowledge and understanding of their subject and the desire to share this knowledge to all those who wish to understand and experience this subject. ~ Customer, Amazon
Love all Rachel Patterson books, very informative and understandable. This book is enjoyable and a very practical making meditation accessible and enjoyable ~ Debbie Newman, Amazon
I love this book. It's one of those books that rarely ends up on my bookshelf , because I refer to it daily. I've meditated for years , but the book has some lovely meditations and pathworkings that I hadn't tried before. I particularly love the crystal and chakra meditations. This may be a small pagan portals book , but as with Rachel's other books, it is chock full of info and wrote in her very reader friendly style. It includes ideas for creating a meditation space, breathing exercises, chants, tea and incense blends, shape-shifting, hedge riding, astral travel and lots of brilliant guided meditations which can be recorded onto your phone or laptop, or read through before use. There's lots more too. This book is suitable for pagans who are new to meditation , and those who are more experienced , but would like some new ideas and inspiration. ~ kindle customer, amazon
As always an excellent book from Rachel Patterson, easy to read and follow can be used by a novice or for someone more experienced. The techniques given in his book can be easily incorporated into daily practice even for the busiest witch!! ~ Amy Newman, Amazon
Having read other books, in an attempt to meditate, this was the first one that I understood. Rachel writes in a friendly, encouraging manner, giving the opportunity to try different methods, till you find the ones that suit you best. ~ Heather J Dewhurst, Amazon
There are many, many books about meditation on the market - I've got quite a few of them myself already - so why would I want another? Well, because Pagan Portals - Meditationis actually a bit different. Most of the books on meditation I've seen are aimed at the general mind, body, spirit market. This one is aimed specifically at pagans and witches. It is written by experienced witch Rachel Patterson, whose previous books include the excellent Grimoire of a Kitchen Witch and A Kitchen Witch's World of Magical Food. All of her books are well written and very practical. In Pagan Portals - Meditation she offers an overview of all the various types of meditation, including the currently extremely popular mindfulness and other widely varying forms including guided pathworkings, breathing meditation, Transcendental MeditationTM and Zen meditation. As well as explaining the basics of how to get started, Pagan Portals - Meditation goes into more advanced magical techniques, such as hedge riding, shape shifting and astral travel - or out of body experiences. For me, the chapter on how to use meditation to achieve an out-of-body experience was the most useful. To be completely honest, in the past I've only ever had out-of-body experiences when I've been very ill - and that's not something I'd recommend to anyone. Rachel Patterson offers a whole range of much safer techniques to get your consciousness outside your physical body and off travelling in the astral realms. Publisher Moon Books says on its website: "An introduction to the beautiful world of meditation... This book will take you on a journey giving hints and tips on how to meditate successfully, breathing exercises, chants and visualisation tips. Also included are lovely meditation tea and incense blends, how to meditate with crystals, make meditation beads and a whole host of guided meditations for you to experience. Together with introducing you to other meditation skills such as pathworking, shape shifting, astral travel and working with meditation to cleanse your chakras. The ability to bend into a pretzel shape and chant 'om' optional..." Pagan Portals - Meditation would make a great addition to any witch's bookshelf. And some of the techniques it teaches could be just the thing to keep calm and relaxed with all the stresses of life and the festive season upon us at the moment. http://www.badwitch.co.uk/2015/12/review-pagan-portals-meditation.html ~ Lucya Szachnowski, Badwitch blog http://www.badwitch.co.uk
Rachel Patterson has done it again with a concise and meaningful guide that combines meditation "best practices" with her own background and experiences. Many books on meditation seem to try and make the practice look a lot easier than it actually is. Patterson presents the information clearly while also listing key points that could lead the way towards success with this work. Meditation is so important to any practice and I'm glad that this book is out now. ~ David Salisbury, author of 'A Mystic Guide to Cleansing & Clearing'
This is a very readable, user-friendly book, giving a taster of a broad range of meditation practices. Pragmatic, highly usable, and with plenty of inspiration and jumping off points, this is a great place to start if you want to explore meditation as a Pagan. ~ Nimue Brown, author of Druidry and Meditation
Rachel Patterson has written an exuberant and free-spirited introduction to a subject often treated with undue deference and solemnity. She gives her readers permission to sample the smorgasbord of the world's traditions, providing a stimulus to craft their own practice and/or connect with relevant communities and teachers. ~ James Nichol, author of Contemplative Druidry
