I bought Rachel's first book, and loved it, so it was with excitment that I bought this one on its launch!! I cant recommend it enough!! The feeling is very friendly and comfortable as you start to read and feels like a real life "how-to" bible (for what of a better word!! I almost wish it didn't say 'witchcraft' in the title. Why? well, it is one of the most comprehensive books on natural magick I have read and I am recommending it to shamans, energy workers, druids, people interested in magickal practices as well as Wiccans. I myself am a shaman and there is so much information that simply covers so much of natural magick. So, if you are into witchcraft...you should read it. If you are interested in magick especially kitchen magick, then you should read it, whatever you label yourself! This is a delightful book, full of knowing and nous along with a beautiful lightness of spirit. Rachel caught me straight away with … “What is a witch? Well to me a witch is someone who is in tune with the Earth, with the changing of the seasons, someone who connects with the elements and works with all the energies around them.” This speaks to me immediately; it’s what Life, the Universe and Everything is all about. Rachel’s life is about this too. She really encourages people to work with where they are, all of the Earth is sacred. The chapters in Grimoire of a Kitchen Witch lead the reader through the necessary steps to working, either alone or in a group, and she also encourages you to work in what people might call ordinary rooms … like the kitchen. Again, this makes the point that all space is sacred and so is all work. “And don’t forget the appliances too. The freezer and the fridge are good for working spells – if you need to ‘freeze’ some thoughts or emotions or ‘cool off’ a relationship, write it on a slip of paper and pop it in the freezer or the fridge until the spell is done.” It’s a positive delight to read all this. I really feel I’ve found a kindred spirit here. Rachel and I work in different traditions but there are so many connections. This confirms again my feeling that all paths lead to the Source but we may each need to travel by different ones. I’d add, too, that by walking our different paths we add to the intricacy and involvedness of the Earth. Working this way we get more connected to her and she to us; we twine our threads with her. Rachel’s book is a real blessing to those who would like to follow this path. This book is packed with so much information that it makes you feel as though you have a major learning tool in your hands. Yet it is written in such a way that allows you to feel that the author is talking directly and personally to YOU!. This conversational feel allows information to be passed on without any sense of preaching, dogma or ego. The writing style is friendly but also precise. Although written from the kitchen witch perspective, this is a great book for all who follow an earthy path and as a shaman, I enjoyed it more than some of the shamanic books out there. The book unfolds into more and more explanations, stories and advice without ever assuming knowledge but also never assuming that the reader is anything less than intelligent and sentient. So it is never preachy, starchy,condescending or obtuse. I particularly enjoyed the sections on animal guides and elementals. The meditations and lessons are well thought out and the little extras like Hoodoo and planetary influences are informative and fun.
