Forbidden Rites deals with the subject of traditional rather than Wiccan Witchcraft, though it can be used by anyone wishing to deepen their knowledge. It takes the reader on a journey through an initiates period of self assessment, with visualisations, practical work, anecdote, ritual and power control. It teaches the reader about the Goddess, God, the festivals and tools that you will need. It suggests the best way of making them, and details the use of gems, herbs and oils, runes, amulets, formularies, and familiaries. Forbidden Rites is very comprehensive, packed with well-researched information and can serve as a reference work when the initiation period has ended.
Jeanette Ellis has run a coven for over twenty years and has presided over perhaps more open rituals than anyone in the UK.
This book is practical, lucid, helpful, responsible, honest, and at times very moving. Ronald Hutton, Professor of Historical Studies, Bristol University

She covers everything one might expect in a textbook on traditional witchcraft and writes with a clear, informative style, with well-researched content (no index though). It's a sound investment if you feel called. ~ Pilgrims Mind Body Spirit
Jeanette describes spellcraft in a clear and concise way. From Chants to Happiness Spells to a Requiem for the Departed, she covers most aspects of Life. This is a wonderful primer and highly recommended. ~ Wiccan Rede
Overall, I feel Forbidden Rites is a good introduction to witchcraft. It is packed full of information and would also be a useful reference for experienced witches. To my mind the best sections are those covering minerals, gems, metal, jewellery and amulets. ~ Lucya Szachnowski, www.badwitch.co.uk
There are good points, namely the profuse number of illustrations, both hand-drawn and photos. The author is clearly a teacher and what she is trying to impart is useful. Forbidden Rites succeeds best as what it is: a documentation of a personal path of witchcraft for the small group of people who work in that tradition. It is based on a teaching course the author has run since 1998, and that is just fine. I wish Forbidden Rites had been as good as I wanted it to be. ~ Lisa Mc Sherry, www.facingnorth.net
It gives me great pleasure to endorse this book. It manages to be at the same time practical, lucid, helpful, responsible, honest, and at times very moving. ~ Ronald Hutton, Professor of Historical Studies, Bristol University
There are many primers on modern witchcraft available at the moment, but few we would actually recommend to the novice. This is definitely one of the ones we would recommend. Although it is about a specific tradition, it covers all the basics you need to know if you starting on the path of witchcraft. Not only does it do this with knowledge, insight and wisdom, but it does it with interjections of humour; and humour as we have discovered over the years is one of the best teachers. We started by saying that we would recommend this to any novice, but with the humour we have to say that we feel that many witches of longstanding would gain benefit from reading this book. ~ Janet Farrar and Gavin Bone, Authors A Witches Bible, A Witches Goddess and Progressive Witchcraft
This very readable book gives a well balanced overview of the writers approach to this particular strand of the Craft. There is much for both the novice and the more experienced practitioner to contemplate, with well structured chapters dealing with a very wide range of subjects. The books extensive nature encourages further research and acts as a spring board for the enquiring mind. A excellent addition to any library, large or small. ~ Simon Costin, Director of the Musuem of British Folklore
