Forbidden Rites deals with the subject of traditional rather than Wiccan Witchcraft, though it can be used by anyone wishing to deepen their knowledge. It takes the reader on a journey through an initiates period of self assessment, with visualisations, practical work, anecdote, ritual and power control. It teaches the reader about the Goddess, God, the festivals and tools that you will need. It suggests the best way of making them, and details the use of gems, herbs and oils, runes, amulets, formularies, and familiaries. Forbidden Rites is very comprehensive, packed with well-researched information and can serve as a reference work when the initiation period has ended.
Jeanette Ellis has run a coven for over twenty years and has presided over perhaps more open rituals than anyone in the UK.

There are good points, namely the profuse number of illustrations, both hand-drawn and photos. The author is clearly a teacher and what she is trying to impart is useful. Forbidden Rites succeeds best as what it is: a documentation of a personal path of witchcraft for the small group of people who work in that tradition. There are many primers on modern witchcraft available at the moment, but few we would actually recommend to the novice. This is definitely one of the ones we would recommend. Although it is about a specific tradition, it covers all the basics you need to know if you starting on the path of witchcraft. Not only does it do this with knowledge, insight and wisdom, but it does it with interjections of humour; and humour as we have discovered over the years is one of the best teachers. This very readable book gives a well balanced overview of the writers approach to this particular strand of the Craft. There is much for both the novice and the more experienced practitioner to contemplate, with well structured chapters dealing with a very wide range of subjects. The books extensive nature encourages further research and acts as a spring board for the enquiring mind.
