Too often we encounter efforts to dismiss climate change as a “wicked” – that is, essentially unsolvable – problem. But nothing could be more wicked than such unhelpful framing. Tom Bowman is a communication expert who has helped create museum experiences that engage and educate the public about climate change. In this breezy, concise primer on climate action, he explains why the only obstacles that remain are societal and political will. And we have the ability to surmount those obstacles, if we simply make the commitment, to paraphrase the great Yoda, to not just try, but do. ~ The Guardian, "Thirty books to help us understand the world in 2020", Dr. Michael Mann, Penn State University
Read this book! I've worked in the field of climate change for nearly 3 decades. So, at this stage, it's not often that I have a major "a-ha!" moment. Reading Tom's book was one of those. Going forward, I'm going to be repeating the mantra from his book: we need to stop burning fossil fuels well before mid-century, and absolutely, positively must not fail. That statement makes so much of the confusing complexity of this issue that I have spent my entire career studying condense into actionable pathways. This is not to say that the book is dismissive of complexity. Instead, the book empowers us to tackle the issue in the ways for which we are best equipped. This "power to the edge" approach could be seen as flying in the face of the top-down, command-control approach that we often hear is needed to address climate change. Tom isn't saying that we don't need legislation and international agreement. He embraces Paris and other hallmark agreements. But, his focus is more on empowering us all to pull the levers that we each control to address the issue -- and to pull them in a way that enhances social equity. The bottom line is that we all need to read this book. ~ Peter Schultz. Ph.D., Amazon
I read Tom's book in the course of a single morning - and it felt like the dawning of a new day. Prior to reading this book, my usual thinking was along the lines of "I'd love to do something to help the fight against the climate crisis, but what's the point? How much of an impact can I make?" Now, I see that I can indeed make a difference, especially as the leader of a small to medium size business. I also can't wait to share this book with others in my community and my industry. Hope inspires action, and this book gives us both! ~ June McIvor, Amazon
Excellent book. It does not mince words about the severity of the crisis we face, but provides an optimistic approach using insights from the author’s experience in public communications, business, marketing and service on panels about climate change. A nice combination of “we HAVE a serious problem” and “we CAN tackle it.” ~ Naomi Seko, Amazon
This needs to be read by everybody Too many dreary books on the climate crisis leave readers discouraged and hopeless. This book is written to mobilize everyone to start thinking about the climate crisis as a call to action. With examples from his own experience running a small business, Tom Bowman shows us how we can start working toward solutions to this mess right now, in our own daily lives. I bought 10 copies to pass on to my friends and colleagues. Thanks for this book Tom. You’re an inspiration! ~ Shrink-wrap, Amazon
Highly recommended! Drawing on a nuanced understanding of human behavior, design thinking, and experience driving organizational change, Bowman cuts through the Gordian Knot of climate change with simple, straightforward, and practical solutions. This stimulating and optimistic book explores a profound truth about the climate change challenge. Framing it as inevitable catastrophe leads only to despair, but focusing on simple goals and achievable solutions is the key to real success. ~ Richard Somerville, Amazon
Full of eye opening information Wonder why there is so much confusion in regards to climate crisis? Is the world going to end within our lifetime? Tom explains not only why we are in a climate crisis but how we as individuals can take action towards solving it. I found the psychology of why we behave the way we do and the reasons for so much confusion behind the climate crisis absolutely fascinating. This book is great for everyone; those just now learning about sustainability and those who have been studying it for a long time. ~ Kaylin Chenoweth from Starting Sustainability, Amazon
If you’re concerned about climate change, you need to read this book I'm one of those folks who has despaired about Earth's future, and nothing else I've read has given me more hope or left me feeling more empowered than Tom Bowman's book. This is a terrific read. I'm recommending it to everyone I know, and I encourage you to get a copy for yourself and share it with your friends. ~ Kindle Customer, Amazon
A fresh approach to transforming our energy culture This book is focused not on the science of climate change, but the psychology of confronting it. The author relies on a few simple insights about human nature and studies on how widespread social change happens to create a believable, inspiring path toward ending our dependence on fossil fuel. He speaks with authority since he made his own small business go green. ~ S. Weaver, Amazon
More than a ray of hope, feels like a new day dawning. In what seems like a dark time, Tom Bowman's book is more than just a ray of hope, it makes me believe that a new dawn is coming. By helping us reframe the crisis as a simple task we can all work on together it seems possible. Of course, simple is not the same as easy. But I felt something shift in my as I read this inspiring book. Will that happen to you? Today is Nov 4, the day after the US election, and the day US is to withdraw from the Paris Climate Accords. IF Biden wins the final vote count, we will be back...and ready to get to work. ~ Tim Ward, Amazon

As Tom Bowman explains in this inspiring, concise primer on climate action, we have the ability to surmount this mentality, if we simply make the commitment to not just try, but do. ~ Michael Mann, Distinguished Professor, Penn State University and author of The New Climate War: The Fight to Take Back Our Planet
As California’s top official charged with developing plans to stop climate change, I am constantly told that the science and economics of global warming are too complicated for all but a small technical elite to figure out solutions. Tom Bowman turns that picture on its head and then empowers small businesses and ordinary citizens to make it happen. ~ Mary Nichols, Chair, California Air Resources Board
Bowman delivers what those in the fight for climate solutions have been craving - a clear-eyed optimist with a plan. It’s a must-read and a feel-good book all at once. ~ Rob Gould, Ph.D., Director of Strategic Communication, Medical Society Consortium on Climate & Health.
The premise of this book is crucial: though climate change is a complicated problem, the most important solution is very clear. We have to stop burning fossil fuels, and we have to do it fast.
