Joshua David Gonsalves

Joshua D. Gonsalves is an Assistant Professor in the English Department at the American University of Beirut, where he teaches Literary Criticism and Theory (majors-only introduction and graduate courses), Cinema Studies (cross-listed introduction and American Studies; i.e., “Race” in “America”: Post-Racial Cinematics), and the Long Nineteenth-century (Romanticism/ Victorianism and Aestheticism/Decadence). His research and teaching interests include Psychoanalysis, Geopolitics and the History/Theory of War, (Pre)Cinema Studies, Continental Philosophy, Theory & Literary Criticism, Financial and Animal Studies.

Recent research includes publications on American film-maker David Lynch (in David Lynch in Theory, Charles U Press, 2010), on Lord Byron’s biopolitical negotiation with Napoleonic Geopolitics (in Byron and the Politics of Freedom and Terror, Palgrave, 2011), and on the potential dialogue between Romantic Studies and Speculative Realism (European Romantic Review, 24.2, 2013). Recent conference presentations on “Genres of Warfare: Byron Besieges Siege Mentalities” (38th Annual International Byron Conference, 2012) and “Thalassophobia, or the Oceanic Fear of Financialization in Frank Norris’s The Octopus and The Pit (Oceans Apart: 6th World Congress of the International American Studies Association, Szczecin, Poland, 3-6 August 2013) are appearing in proceedings-form (the latter is part of an interest in finance capital as war-matrix; i.e., “Anglo-American Sovereignty and the Anglophile Containment of Queer Desire [The Dark Knight Rises]”; presented at the Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Bin Abdulaziz Alsaud Center for American Studies and Research [CASAR] Conference: Sexual Sovereignty: Citizenship, Governmentality, and Territory, AUB; 13-15 March, 2013). He recently finished a ten-week seminar at the Beirut Art Center: IKON CONTRA MODERNITY: MALEVICH, TARKOVSKY AND THE GENEALOGY OF THE MOVING IMAGE:

In April 2013, Professor Gonsalves will be presenting research related to his ikon project (based, in part, on a revisionist post-secularist interpretation of the Mid-East on the basis of an ikonophilic/ikonophobia dynamic) as a keynote: “Derrida and Badiou on Plato on Art: From Mimesis to Malevich”: Contemporary Dialogues with Ancient Thought: 10th Annual De Philosophia Conference, University of Ottawa (5 April, 2014).This presentation will follow up on work-in-progress presented in 2013 at the flagship international Romanticist conference in Munich: “Functional Differentiation and the Systemic Bias of Poetic Knowledge: Badiou Contra Luhmann”. He is, in sum, laying the foundations for a future project: Ikon. Malevich. Tarkovsky: Ikonoklastic Modernism—from Cubo-Futurism to Badiou and Boris Groys.

This summer, he will be presenting "Figurations of the Octopus—from England to Japan: Mapping the Romantic Conflict between Privacy and Society" at Romantic Connections, a NASSR (North American Society for the Study of Romanticism) Supernumerary Conference, University of Tokyo, June 13–15, 2014 (a flagship Romanticist society-conference that he has been participating in since 2000)…
