4 out of 5 stars. 'Excavating Fate,' authored by Andrea Franco-Cook, tells the story of an intern archaeologist named Amara, who, with her brother and best friend, gets sucked into a portal and meets themselves in a setting that dates back to two thousand years before the present time in Carthage, now Tunisia. They face a lot of challenges from both natural and supernatural forces. They met with notable figures they had previously studied in history, and their actions and inactions altered events that, in turn, had an effect on the present they left behind. I enjoyed reading this book, as it made time travel more authentic than I ever imagined. Aside from telling a story that is historically inclined with an infusion of fiction, readers who lay hold of this book will find it priceless. This is because it communicates themes and morals, such as selflessness and the priceless value of family, love, friendship, and relationships. Narrated from the perspective of Amara, the author made me understand every bit of action and every character. I must admit that the suspense was so tight that it kept me glued to the story. In addition, the thrill in this book adds more uniqueness to its plot. The only aspect I didn't like about the book was the amount of profanity used. For this reason, I rate it 4 out of 5 stars . Besides this, the author's language use is simple and easily comprehensible. Again, I found the scenes highly relatable, despite being fictional. The errors I found are few and could be easily corrected, and this makes me believe it has some level of professional editing. This book is recommended to readers who love historical fiction, time travel, and good family values. Again, it is most suitable for adult readers because of the level of profanity used.
