Teresa O’Driscoll, born in Cardiff, capital of Wales, spent a number of years working as a journalist in Athens, capital of Greece. It was there that she was inspired to write her book 9 Days to Heaven, How to make everlasting meaning of your life. Check out the book trailer on YouTube: http://youtu.be/154luv8KMns

She has now returned to her native city. In lockdown she kept sane by channelling a mishmash of emotions into writing. This proved a good move as she has had a further two books accepted for publication.

Her prayer guide, Pray Then Listen, A heart-to-heart with God, was released by Circle Books on 30th September 22. And her debut novel, Angel at the Paradise Hotel, set on the green and beautiful Greek island of Corfu – where her personal Odyssey began, will be released by Roundfire Books in Spring 23. This is a wonderful book. My husband absolutely loved it. He has read all your books now as he studies his Bible each day and is close to the almighty. Hope there will be another soon.

So often, people tell me they have no idea how to connect with God through prayer, and finding simple resources for them is difficult. Pray Then Listen can be just such a resource, particularly for new Christians or those seeking a change in their approach to prayer.

The language of the prayers in this book is language we use every day—no special words or jargon required. That’s their genius: making the process of prayer, which can be so intimidating to so many people, as easy and natural as breathing.

Along the way, Teresa uses her approach to prayer as an entry point for many basic Christian practices, like Bible reading (using your imagination) and forgiveness. Moreover, by sharing so much of her own experience, she invites readers to see that we tiny humans can connect with the God of the universe—and that God wants to connect right back.

The basic premise for this book is found at the beginning in the Introduction where the author writes, “God…said to me…’Write a book and show people how to speak to Me.’” As with any human-authored work on a religious subject, people of different theological backgrounds may find statements, observations, and conclusions with which they disagree. For example, the author says of God’s response to her prayers, “In some of the situations He spoke to me directly.” Many sincere Bible believers, who pray fervently and are fully convinced that God hears and answers their prayers, do not share the thinking that God speaks directly to them. Also she writes of certain answers to prayers that “I am, of course, describing miracles,” whereas, again, there are devout Christians who are firmly persuaded that God is still active in our lives today but not in a miraculous way.

There seems to me to be a lot of emphasis on physical preparation for prayer. Many of the meditations begin with instructions like this: “Sit with your back straight and close your eyes. Exhale fully and take a slow in-breath. Hold it for a few seconds and breathe out and feel tension leaving with it. Then say the following prayer.” As with many of the suggestions in the book, some may find these directions useful while others may not. I do appreciate the author’s reaction to the question as to why bad things happen: “Many years ago, after going through an extremely testing time related to a close relative, I eventually made the decision to put that question aside….I don’t know why bad things happen. But I decided to keep putting my trust in my loving Heavenly Father.” I also applaud her stand on the Bible: “Although written thousands of years ago, the Bible, a collection of books, is as fresh and as relevant today as it was then.” There is much interesting reading in this “prayer guide.”

This book describes a thoughtful, spiritual journey. This sentence in the author's preface sums up her approach well: "No matter where you are right now in your walk with God, I show you how to speak to Him from your heart and to listen expectantly for His reply." Many books in this genre focus on how to talk to God, but often do not address the listening aspect. A two-way conversation, after all, is always at the center of relationships. That being said, this book also includes prayers to recite when various life situations occur. Or, they can be used for a good place to begin the spiritual conversation. However, the most inspiring section for me is Section Six when the author outlines a way to make Bible stories alive by using your imagination. A perfect example of what is possible when one uses creative gifts to connect to Him!

This book was given to me by the author, much appreciated.

I was lucky enough to beta-read Teresa O'Driscoll’s, Pray Then Listen: A Heart-to-Heart with God. This book is a delight. Some of the prayers brought me back to my childhood, while others were new and exciting, such as meditating on Zacharia. I’ve never seen anything like what’s featured in this simple book. Teresa’s writing style is as if she was talking right to me. As an American, I loved her Welsh phrases. They added to the overall sweetness of this book. All in all, reading this book brought me closer to the God I love so much.

I absolutely love the premise of “Pray, Then Listen” because I am convinced that God wants us to listen to what He has to say just as much as we want Him to hear what we have to say. In it, Theresa O’Driscoll invites the reader to develop an intimate relationship with Christ – one that not only includes talking but listening. Armed with testimonies of how God heard and responded to many of her prayers, she offers the reader her blueprint for initiating dialog with Jesus. And for those who do not know how to pray, she provides a collection of short prayers for various situations that the reader can use as a guide to jumpstart their prayer lives. I really enjoyed her emphasis on being mindful of God’s presence throughout the day.

As a born-again, spirit-filled believer, my only struggle was with one of the Catholic teachings she introduced that I personally can’t endorse scripturally, specifically the notion of praying for the dead. My concern is that people in cultures that encourage idolatry or ancestor worship could trade Biblical truths with doctrines that are not scripturally sound (2 Timothy 4:3-4).

While I do not agree with some of the doctrines the author introduces, I think that “Pray, Then Listen” can be a tool for the young believer who has a spiritual covering with a solid command of scripture.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great introduction to prayer

I was asked to review this book by the author but the review contains my own thoughts and opinions.
Pray Then Listen is an ideal introductory guide to prayer for the new Christian. It is organised under chapter headings and topical titles for ease of use and reference. It goes without saying that if you want to start a conversation with the Lord, it makes sense to train yourself to listen out for the answer, too. The author does this in an easy and accessible way. The language used is for the general reader, making this book an ideal guide for those starting on their Christian journey or for those who have so far been what I call cultural Christians who are investigating the Lord for the first time.
