It is especially useful that Dr. Taylor then moves to the logical consequences of the illusion of choice to address what we all know is an inhumane criminal justice system that is really quite unjust, traumatizes, and actually increases criminality. We all knew that punishment doesn't work. But Dr. Taylor lays out the foundations for a system that contains, treatment and rehabilitates where possible without punishment and trauma, while retaining the critical need for responsibility, accountability, and consequences, such as reparation, for our actions. Implicit in his writing is the recognition, due to our social interdependence, of the need for responsibility and consequences even though choice is an illusion. This requires some thought to grasp the paradox of responsibility if there is no free will, as the emerging neuroscience literature indicates.
I hope that those in the criminal justice system will read this book. May it have a positive impact in addressing criminality and lead to a more just and humane society. I also think that deep reflection on the truths in the book will leave all off us with less judgment and more compassion towards ourselves and others.
Bravo Dr. Taylor for a brilliant book! Thank you!
The Deceptive Brain by Robert L
Taylor is an interesting and shocking book about both the brain and our illusion of control we have over what we do and also the book talks about the justice system and how we focus on blame and revenge .
I found myself agreeing with him in parts of this book, feeling myself squirm uncomfortably considering other parts..
Could this really be true? And other parts just down right disagreeing with
Sorry but I don't believe that sociopaths can be rehabilitated.
However there is a lot of research here and he has written this very well. The whole area of "can sociopaths be rehabilitated or change " at all for myself as a therapist has always been a personal interest. So far I haven't had much evidence of it as it is wired in them.
I did like his idea of changing the prison system to blameless but still responsible . That I can live with and changing the living conditions would be a good idea.
