Kait Brecker can't remember the last time she didn't feel like busted glass.

Her volcanic temper's scared off her friends, and a miserable breakup with her boyfriend Lutz left her crippled with guilt and painful memories. So when she learns her childhood best friend is planning a sojourn to a secluded mountain cabin, Kait jumps at the chance to tag along, convinced that rekindling this fractured friendship will fix whatever's breaking down inside her.

She should have known… Lutz would never let her go that easily.

After a chance roadside meeting, he pursues her into the foothills, revealing the monster under his skin for the first time: a malevolent body-snatching entity bent on tearing Kait's life to pieces. Now, with miles of silent forest between them and salvation and Lutz overpowering one terrified camper after the next, Kait must unite her estranged friends against this horrifying threat before the shadows of her past devour her life for good.

Don't buy the hype: Jacob Steven Mohr was not raised by wolves. Feral children are capable of many things, but weaving wild words into flesh and fantasy isn't one of them. Lucky us. If it were, we'd all be speaking Wolf. Mohr's work has previously appeared in Outrageous Fortune, Aurora Wolf, Liquid Imagination, and Body Parts Magazin, as well as on the stage of the Browncoat Theater in Wilmington, NC. He lives in Columbus, Ohio.

I had the privilege of reading an advance copy of The Unwelcome prior to publication, and decided to treat myself to another helping after the novel officially hit the shelves. I tore through it at a relentless pace—much to my delight—because I just couldn’t stop reading. Tackling dark, heavy themes through robust and visceral characters, this is one of those books that grabs hold of you with sharp claws and leaves you bleeding long after you've put it down.

Mohr’s distinct writing style proves both elegant and straightforward, eschewing sentences you have to reread to understand for sentence you want to reread to appreciate how crisp and startling they are. The Unwelcome is a no-frills, unsettling, atmospheric thrill ride that takes one of the most well-loved horror setting tropes and somehow manages to both embrace and subvert it. Not just another “spring break cabin in the woods” story, Mohr’s latest book may well become the standard by which you measure such by.

To call this book a slow-burn would prove a sore understatement; The Unwelcome leaves you no choice but to bask in the heat of the glowing fuse, savoring each delicious moment as the explosion engulfs you.

The Unwelcome has a great concept and it captures your attention from the very beginning. A very well-written mix of fantasy and horror novel that is definitely worth reading!

The Unwelcome caught my eye with its fantastically surreal cover and the body-snatching premise. The writing is polished and the dialogue is strong. The pacing is even throughout with some brutal action sequences. I liked the body-snatching aspect which leads to incredibly tense scenes. This is the kind of book that requires your concentration and unfortunately, I did feel my attention lagging at times. I think this might be a case of a mismatch between a reader and a book. I have no doubt this book would thrill horror readers; it was just not a favourite for me. But I will be sure to keep an eye out on the author’s future books.

CW: physical violence, domestic abuse

The characters is well written and the book kept my attention.

Half of the book, I was confused and the other half, I was in shock. There were twists and turns. I was at the edge of my seat.

I would recommend it!

I recently re-read this book and thoroughly enjoyed it. I hope there is a sequel as I believe the characters that survive at the end have more adventures awaiting them. I would say this is YA horror but that older adults would enjoy this as well.

Mohr is a personal friend of mine, but I always approach his writing through the lens of a stranger. I was pleasantly surprised when I got around the reading The Unwelcome, a gripping paranormal horror novel with brilliantly written characters. I had been introduced to Lutz, Kait, and others in previous drafts through the years, but nothing prepared me for the raw, messy relationships Mohr has so impeccably captured on his pages. Beautiful displays of emotion, thrilling battles of words, and genuine dread take root in between these unique individuals, which sometimes makes it difficult to know who you really want to come out on top. A blend of normal and paranormal tension is sure to keep you flipping pages as Mohr expertly blends the uncanny with the mundane. I knocked the entire thing out in 2 days, a feat I haven't performed since I was a child reading campy YA fiction. The Unwelcome is a creative and enjoyable take on an old trope, and his villain is tantalizingly hateable. Characters ebb and flow, creating something and someone so real you could swear you've met them. If for nothing else, Mohr's characters are a worthwhile reason to pick up this book.

However, there are places where the novel struggles. As is echoed in others' reviews, there are times when the overarching plot drags somewhat. Mohr's strong characters and character dynamics kept me going, but I couldn't help but feel my attention slipping between portions of the action. Mohr's experience writing short stories and anthology work has honed his eye for characters, settings, and conflicts to a razor edge, which supported the plot through these slow times, but in future works I'd love to see that brought up to the same level.

I hovered between 4 and 5 stars for a long time writing this before finally settling on 5. If only I could do a 4.5! I believe we can expect even greater things from Mohr. His writing has greatly evolved over the years, and for his first true full-length foray into the eerie universe his books are set in, he has captured something both magical and unsettling.

I'm sure the academy will call you back soon enough :)
