Forever in My Veins: How Film Led Me to the Mysterious World of the African Shaman Kindle Edition

4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars 22 ratings

Emmy Award-winning producer and New York Times bestselling author Lionel Friedberg has spent 50 years making films as diverse as full-length theatrical features and television documentaries. After growing up in South Africa during the troubled era of apartheid he began his career during the dying days of colonialism in Central Africa. He eventually settled in Los Angeles where his work took him to the sound stages of Hollywood and to the most remote regions of the Earth. His career exposed him to the extraordinary wonders of our planet and brought him into close contact with many unforgettable personalities from maverick scientists to politicians, entertainers and people who survived near-death experiences. His observations have taught him that life is far more complex and infinitely stranger than we can imagine. When he was struck by an unexpected life-threatening illness his efforts to find a way to save his life took him back to Africa where he encountered the age-old rituals and powerful healing methods of African shamans. Their mysterious ways have much to teach us and are as relevant today as they were in ancient times.

Captivating adventure story of a life rich in experience and COMPASSION.
5 Stars
Captivating adventure story of a life rich in experience and COMPASSION.
One moment young Lionel pilots a 200' vessel through 100 foot waves, having not slept in 36 hours. The next moment, he is in the Okavango in Botswana, confronting crocodiles in every direction, alone in a rowboat without oars. Adventures throughout. But the REAL adventure builds throughout his fascinatingly diverse life time experiences as a prime time Hollywood Emmy winning cinematographer, producer, director and writer. When faced with life threatening disease, he is helped by deceased ancestors, mysteriously through the specific actions of friends who help save his life. You will NEVER read ANYTHING like this ANYWHERE. This story is UNIQUE. And REAL.

Lionel Friedberg's writing kept me engaged and fascinated. I learned so much from the book's detailed accounts of his experiences in mysterious and beautiful places, as well as his enlightening descriptions of the world of film and TV through the years. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the entertainment industry, or who has ever questioned the meaning of life, or is someone who loves a good read. Enjoy!

Lionel Friedberg's "Forever in. My Veins" stands as a remarkable testament to personal voyages - within and without. Part exceedingly rich and wonderfully detailed autobiography and part meditation on the power of the spirit, I came away dazzled by the sheer quantity of unusual and profound life experiences that Mr. Friedberg has had. He brings a thoughtfulness and an honest, deep and probing perspective to all these experiences.

His deep passion for movie-making across multiple genres is palpable.

This is a wonderful tribute to the many cultures thriving side-by-side in Southern Africa, to movie-making and to the search for spirit in unexpected forms. A great read.

This was one of the most fascinating books I have ever read. Lionel Friedberg tells his story with such honesty, insight, clarity and some of the most uprorious humor, at times I was just tickled to death. His writing is just so eloquent...he does not bore. What a page turner. This will have you questioning our very existence on this planet we call earth. I've been pondering my ancestors lately and wanting to honor them in some way. Well, after reading this book I am going to erect my alter to my ancestors. Thank you Lionel for this book...

Emmy Award-winning producer, and New York Times best selling author Lionel Friedberg's new book is a memoir that encompasses the gripping and unforgettable story of his quest for healing that led him back to his childhood origins in Southern Africa. He relates riveting and mysterious accounts of rituals he undergoes with Shamanic healers, and their various predictions. The book also details the early history of South Africa, the events and political turmoil of the Apartheid era, and the author's interesting life and career curve that took him to the four corners of earth.

Super interesting as it follows the author through his life and adventures, as well as the interesting people he meets. Towards the end it starts to feel like a lecture on environmentalism and climate change.

I can't even think of a book to compare this one to. Friedberg's stories -- factual accounts -- of everything from Antarctic voyages to African healing rituals are rivetingly portrayed. His rich and varied career as a cinematographer would normally make a worthwhile tale of its own, but here it is just one strand of a life packed with interesting people and memorable events. I enjoyed every page of this exceptionally well-written book!
