'She lets us see the often chaotic and nature-starved modern world through the eyes of our foremost conservation president ...a view that is at once uplifting and provocative, but always fascinating.' Tony Flemming, Geologist and co-author, Geologic Map of the Washington West Quadrangle, Oct 24, 2020

Washington D.C. naturalist Melanie Choukas-Bradley dives into the natural history and beauty of Theodore Roosevelt Island, an island wilderness less than two miles from the White House and a memorial to the United States' foremost conservationist president. In 2016, as the presidential election dealt a body-blow to progressive thinkers in the US, Melanie sought the solace of Theodore Roosevelt Island. In this book she reflects on the inspiring environmental legacy of Roosevelt, and how immersing oneself in nature can help to heal, restore and encourage a person, even in the midst of the strange new reality of a divisive occupant in the White House. Melanie leads the reader along walks and kayak trips around the island, as together with other Washingtonian nature lovers, birders, conservationists, and even descendants of Roosevelt, they find solace in the island's natural wonders, and ponder their nation's future. Includes a foreword by Tom Lovejoy, Senior Fellow at the United Nations Foundation.

Balm For A Troubled Soul
I have been a fan of Melanie Choukas-Bradley’s books since I first read A Year In Rock Creek Park. I instantly knew she was a soul sister in loving nature. Two years ago, I attended my first tour led by Melanie. It was a forest bathing class organized by Smithsonian Associates. Since then, I have made a point of seeking out the naturalist tours that she conducts in the greater Washington DC area. When she told me that she was writing a book about a year spent at Theodore Roosevelt Island, I was thrilled. I knew it would be of the same caliber of her Rock Creek Park book. I couldn’t wait to see how she would write about this “enchanted island world.” My copy arrived in today’s mail and I eagerly began reading her newest book. Her prose is pure poetry. I felt myself virtually standing next to her as I read about the kingfisher leading her on a moonlit journey by kayak. I craned my neck upward to see the heron fly high above the Potomac. I felt the soft suede of the cattails rubbed between my thumb. Her words instantly helped me visualize in minute detail the birds, plants and trees of this wilderness which is located less than 2 miles from the White House yet a world apart. I have taken three separate tours of Theodore Roosevelt Island in the last 2 years with Melanie (including one by kayak under the hot July sun). And I can tell you her book will transport you to this leafy green heaven on earth. If you need calm during this stressful period during a pandemic, read this book. Or to quote Melanie, “finding wild beauty in the midst of the city has always comforted and inspired me. With our country now torn apart by political strife and violence, and climate-change concerns my near-constant preoccupation, could this Island that I was exploring by kayak be a balm for my troubled soul?” The answer is yes for Melanie as well as her grateful readers who find solace at TRI.

In this beautifully written and unique memoir, nature-writer Melanie Choukas-Bradley records her internal experiences and external observations over twelve eventful months, from July 2016-July 2017. With keen attention to detail and beautifully rendered scenes, this book spans multiple genres: personal memoir, botany, history, and political commentary, interlaced with poetic descriptions of the flora and fauna of Theodore Roosevelt Island in Washington, DC. If you’ve been to this enchanting island, as I have, you will love this ode to one of DC’s most under-appreciated natural resources. But even if you’ve never been to Theodore Roosevelt Island or even to DC, I believe this book will have universal appeal for nature-lovers everywhere. It addresses timeless themes about how nature can provide a balm during troubled times, and about the importance of being mindfully present and engaged with simple joys and natural beauty. It also addresses the timely question facing us today: How can we find solace in the context of climate change worries, political turmoil, oppression and violence? In wrestling with these questions, Melanie brings to each page her botanical expertise, her training as a certified forest therapy guide, her personal insights as a woman and concerned citizen, and as always, her beautiful prose. From turtles to Trump, this book had me hooked. Five stars.

Melanie tells us that every walk in nature has the elements of a good story. In her book, she gifts us with many walks and many wonderful stories. She introduces us to the flora and fauna of Theodore Roosevelt Island, the history of the island, and to the amazing legacy of this conservationist President. I loved hearing for the first time about Roosevelt’s adventurous spirit and his passion for nature.

The rich descriptions of the trees, flowers and birds makes me want to google their images. But, better yet, I’ve decided to visit the island this month...for the first time in 20 years. Although you don’t need to be a Washington resident to appreciate this book, I feel lucky that I can drive or bicycle or kayak across the river and see it for myself with little advance planning. I’m gifting this book to all my nature-loving friends. Thank you, Melanie!

Choukas-Bradley's books are odes to both nature and joy and Finding Solace at Theodore Roosevelt Island is possibly her best yet. Roosevelt Island could be lost on a nature lover, faulted as too urban, too noisy, and too busy. Finding Solace gets you to slow down and look closely, tune out the airplanes and flotsam left behind by visitors and settle down and tune in. Through her eyes the reader realizes what a gem we have: the island is covered with tall cooling trees and wildflowers, and swarming with extraordinary birds, butterflies, and other fauna. This deeply personal book is like having a close friend hike beside you prompting you to delight in discovery after discovery and truly, her gift of seeing will stick with you on all your trails. Finding Solace is the perfect antidote to our difficult times. Turn off the news, pick up Finding Solace, and go for a hike.

Finding Solace at Theodore Roosevelt Island is comfort food for troubled times. The author paints a picture of an island refuge that I can picture so vividly in my mind that I feel I have walked the trails myself and kayaked close to the rocky shore. While offering nature’s comfort, the author doesn’t shrink from world affairs. She shares her progressive views quite passionately.

This book is a spectacular tour of the flora and fauna of a beautiful island right in the Potomac. Perhaps the crowned jewel of Melanie’s books (and I’ve read them all)! She has a way of weaving so much knowledge into her lovely visuals of flowers and trees. I feel reverent of nature right along with her. A perfect gift for anyone who appreciates the out of doors!

The next best thing to taking an actual nature walk with Melanie Choukas-Bradley, is walking with her through a year of natural history on Theodore Roosevelt Island. She introduces you to a Wonderland, but unlike Alice, this is the real thing.
