Invoking Animal Magic explores the power and wisdom of animal allies. More than a compilation of interesting facts—stories, folklore and animal behavior are integrated in a modern pagan perspective. Illustrations based on cave paintings and artifacts add a visual component to the text while thought-provoking questions and fun activities help ground the material in personal experience. Invoking Animal Magic offers an in-depth study of nine animals, each with an important place in Euro-paganism—their myths and legends, historical context and magical themes. Rituals and spells are also included in each section.

I love this author, Hearth Rising. She is a wealth of information. I bought this book as a gift for a friend, who is both a Shaman and Wiccan. She absolutely loved it. I also read the book, previously. Although I am not Wiccan, I found the history about animals and how they were valued throughout time as an invaluable facet of understanding past cultures. I will buy this book again. Also, it came in 2 days (I have Prime).

This is an absolutely delightful book. I've encountered other guides to working with animal totems or animal energies, and most often they are encyclopedic lists of attributes for each creature. Useful, perhaps, but dry reading. Not this one! I was captivated by the skillfully-woven mix of myths, facts, ideas, stories, opinions, and questions for further thought. This is a book to curl up with and savor.

Invoking Animal Magic includes a wide variety of photos and images and each chapter, based on a particular type of animal, contains colorful stories and myths from diverse cultures. There are also questions, exercises, and suggested rituals near the end of each chapter, and the reader is encouraged to gain hands-on experience with the material.

The author has clearly done her research, and she also shares fascinating personal stories of working with various animals. She also contributes to the discourse on several important issues within the Pagan community, such as misinformation about the continuity of ancient practices, the importance of personal experience alongside traditional practices, and the misunderstood art of shape-shifting. This book is bigger than its subject matter, and I also learned new things about history, particular deities, and the origin of some common superstitions in the process of reading it.

I highly recommend reading this book and embarking on its journey through the world of animals and their interactions with us. It's entertaining, educational, and inspiring as well - I now have several new ideas for further research and practice, and I can definitely see myself referring back to Invoking Animal Magic in the future. If you love animals, work with nature and energy, and/or just enjoy good stories, you should have this book in your library.

First off, what this book is not is a bunch of new age fluff. It is in the old style, before New Age publishing and immediately reminded me of Doreen Valiente's work. It is a guide book that was written for a serious pagan practitioner, persons who are interested in the origins of beliefs about animals and mostly people who want guidance on connecting spiritually with animals, nature, and working with animal allies. It is very interesting and intelligently written, all the while she has a delightful way of writing and the realizations are often humorous. The book is also meticulously researched and nicely illustrated. The author has a very deep understanding of what she is speaking, and has investigated and delved deeply into the animals of which you will study in the book. I really like the way she has chosen the animals, instead of a dictionary of every animal she has broken the book into chapters depicting various environments. She also offers most excellent advice on working with guided mediations and the book comes with a download of a meditation audio at authors website, [...]. It is an excellent guide book to work with nature.

Hearth Moon engages with the reader in a creative way, inviting her to explore myths, stories, art and imagery associated with these ancient animal powers. No standard textbook readings here. Refreshing and intelligent.
