This is not your typical meditation book. No Sanskrit terms, no gurus, no mystique. Less a set of instructions, more a challenge to the reader to work on themselves within the framework the author sets out. Simon Cole has formulated a meditation path for a modern age, grounded in Western therapeutic tradition. He draws on eminent thinkers in the field of therapy and human relations - Buber, Rogers and Gendlin. He introduces into meditation 'felt-sense' and 'kindly attention' and invites the reader to sit alongside themselves and truly discover the person they are.

Lifelong (almost) therapist turned writer, author, observer of people, observer of myself…

Poet, philosopher (who isn’t?), lover of music, lover of mountains, lover of solitude (sometimes), lover of stories, believer in journeying (without needing to arrive), believer in being just who we are, believer in human kindliness...

I have written many journal articles and made contributions in different areas online and in professional journals… produced books on philosophy, meditation, mindfulness, even on ‘doing therapy’… and now I’ve turned to novels with the White Cat Books… fiction, semi-fiction, relationship in its widest sense, all with the therapist’s touch, a genre of reflective story-telling.

My muse is the Pyrenees Mountains, the home of our Retreat in France… where I can indulge a walking, musicking, creative mindfulness, listening to the rhythms and feeling the beat of Turangalîla, the thread of life.

There is so much talk and writing about mindfulness these days. It’s refreshing to encounter Simon Cole’s book, Stillness in Mind, which offers a fairly unique take on mindfulness. His approach is very down-to-earth and practical, having been honed for more than 30 years as a counselor and, more recently, in workshops and individual therapy work at his retreat center in the south of France. Essentially, he has created a guidebook about how to develop mindfulness and how to go onto to establish a mindfulness based meditation practice, if one decides they want to move on with it after a period of initial exploration. He does this without any of, what some might consider, the “mumbo-jumbo” of Buddhism. In fact, he comes right out and says that he is not a Buddhist, which is not to say that he has anything against Buddhism. It’s just no his personal path. This is in contrast to most mindfulness authors who seem to be strongly allied with the Buddhist tradition. Rather, both as a therapist and as a meditator, his primary inspirations have been Martin Buber, Carl Rogers, and Eugene Gendlin. I found it refreshing that he had to go the extra mile to really bring it down to an everyday sort of experience and conversation. One thing that stands out for me about his approach is that he recommends a period of reflection after meditation, a time to integrate the experience and any useful learnings, time to digest it both emotionally and cognitively. Often during meditation, there are insights that one has and if you take time to sit with those insights, which may be about personal issues or relationship issues, or even ideas for new projects, these can disappear like smoke without some period of acknowledgement and reflection, even though they arose during a period of empty-minded, non-reflective, nonjudgmental, non-evaluative meditation. I’m happy to recommend this book to anyone who is interested in exploring mindfulness.

Stillness in Mind: A Companion to Mindfulness, Meditation, and Living by Simon Cole is a good book on meditation presented from a western therapeutic tradition for our modern age.

We are taught about not being distracted, not judging, contemplation after meditation, and the mindfulness of feelings among other things. One of my favorite sections of the book was entitled, "Meditation on the Experience of Peace." We are taught how to use meditation to visit our personal pains. We are shown that through meditation we can overcome our pain and transform it. We are also given a meditation entitled, "Benevolence for Our World" and shown how to use it.

At the end of the book we are given a chapter that shows us where we can go from there after we have read the book. This book is great for anyone who wants to find a new way to look at meditation and mindfulness. I will be reading this book again.

I acknowledge that I received this book free of charge for my honest and unbiased opinion of it from Change Makers Books.

Mindfulness is something I have been working on for the last year or so. Finding a way to move thoughts quickly through my mind has proved quite a challenge. But it’s also something that I firmly believe is the key to finding true happiness. From the first page Simon’s easy writing style engaged me. Unlike many books I read, there was no judgement on what is right or wrong…just a suggestion of an approach that might work – if you want it to. Simon has a background both as a psychologist and a guy who runs meditation retreats. He wrote this book because he found he needed a workbook to go with these retreats and the workbook became so significant it became a book. I’m glad. I enjoyed this book immensely. I immediately began to integrate his ideas in working with my clients in my hypnotherapy practice, and also found I could apply them to myself. This was refreshing for me.

Let me give you an example: I often task my clients with mindful eating. Once we have removed the subconscious “thing” that has created an emotional connection to food, I want them to truly notice what they are eating for the first time. Cole refers to this lack of mindfulness as distraction. He gives the example of being given a chocolate. If you are given one you can truly enjoy it. But if you are handed a plate of chocolates, instead of enjoying the one you are eating, you are distracted by thoughts of the next one you will eat. I can’t recommend this book highly enough.

This book is a treasure. The author is not just highly experienced, he is very wise. He shares his knowledge and practical guidance in a thoughtful, insightful and concise manner. There is no waffle here. His style is direct and clear. Along the way, gems are found on almost every page.

Cole moves from a foundation of his chosen "Greats" (Martin Buber, Carl Rogers and Eugene Gendlin), whose philosophy he explains in a lucid and engaging manner, and then develops his own concepts. He also incorporates, where relevant, elements from other contemporary thinkers such as Jon Kabatt-Zin (the importance of "compassionate and non-judgmental awareness of the present").

This is a handbook, not a treatise. It will help you to get to where you want to go but will not weigh you down with theory and jargon. My dog-eared, annotated and much-loved copy is at the top of my bedside pile of books. I do not write book reviews but if, as a result of this, just one person benefits it will be worthwhile.

This is a wonderful book which works both as an easy to read guide for the beginner as well as deepening the experience of meditation for those already familiar with the practice. There are clear descriptions of technique here with tips to avoid distraction, examples of how to work with feelings that come up and, throughout, the suggestion that we approach ourselves with kindness rather than judgement. The author though says it is “not so much a manual of techniques as a companion for a way of living” and this is the clue that this is not any old book on mindfulness the like of which you can find in plenty in your local bookshop or library. Although I have learnt techniques before – either Buddhist meditation or mindfulness – I have not been able to turn that into a regular practice, but Simon Cole’s descriptions of the role of meditation within a self-counselling process made sense to me and suddenly I found myself committed to it. It seems easy to spend time meditating now and I look forward to it which is so different from the times I have tried in the past. Whether you want respite from stress or to get to know yourself a little better this book will be a good companion.
