The Integrated Self: A Holistic Approach to Spirituality and Mental Health Practice Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 18 ratings

Contemporary research supports the importance of spirituality for mental health. Counselors, social workers, psychologists and other therapists wonder how to include spirituality in treatment. Mental health training and current treatment models do not equip clinicians to adequately address the topic of spirituality. The Integrated Self presents a model for identifying and assessing spirituality within the client’s own life and experience. By operationally defining spirituality as a dimension of the client’s experience, The Integrated Self explores the role of culture, values, beliefs, and lifestyle for understanding the spiritual dimension of the person. Using case studies, clinicians learn how to implement the model of the integrated self within their existing theoretical orientation. The Integrated Self also includes discussions on the approaches for spiritual assessment and ethical issues related incorporating spirituality in mental health treatment. While other books focus on religious beliefs, spiritual practices, or formulations of a general kind of spirituality, The Integrated Self provides a model for a holistic approach that can be adapted in both mental health and health care settings.

"The Integrated Self" by Dr. Lou Kavar, is an excellent book. A gifted therpaist and writer, Dr. Kavar successfully implements case studies to make effective points on the integration on spirituality and healing. He makes an effective case for the importance for viewing the self as a whole and for bringing an interdisciplinary approach to bear on the subject of human wellness. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the subjects of healing, psychotherapy and spirituality.

As a clinical counselor at a community college for over 35 years, I have long observed spirituality as a dimension of human experience and wellbeing. But not until Dr. Kavar's "The Integrated Self" have I seen a treatment model that fully addresses this topic. This wonderful, simply written little book, with just the right blend of theory and practice, is a must read for mental health professionals, clergy, and spiritual directors.

Although the editing could have been more accurate (several typos, for instance), the content was interesting and useful. A good read.

Dr. Kavar has brought religious understanding and spiritual wisdom in his two previous books, "The Good Road" and "Stumbling Into Life's Lessons". In this book he brings the full power of a mature and experienced clinical psychologist into the foreground along with spiritual and religious understanding and experience. The result is a contribution to what we all are seeking, wholeness, emotinal and psychological comfort, and the ability to bear inevitable pain. This is not a complicated or long book, and that is it's genius. Dr. Kavar shares with us in this book his deepest understanding so far -- a hard won understanding -- of an orientation of mind that facilitates treatment. While Dr. Kernberg and Dr. Kohut developed sophisticated psychoanalytic models of split up selves, Dr. Bion worked on the 'containment' required to heal these splits to restore and be a whole self. Here Dr. Kavar extends this discussion in a beautiful extended essay that brings sensible spiritual understanding to the emotional table. Please read this book in the pursuit of living more whole. If you are a clinician, please read it in the pursuit of helping your patients.

Review:

As a Hospice RN for nearly twenty years, I really welcome Dr. Kavar's new book, "The Integrated Self". While Hospice has embraced a multi-disciplinary approach, including spiritual care, for some time, this book brings valuable added dimension for the hospice clinician.
After years of hospice work, I found that Dr. Kavar's suggestions for spiritual assessment and intervention to be fresh and thought provoking. The clinical vignettes sprinkled liberally through the book, offer real, pragmatic information that I literally went out and used in my practice the next day
I look forward to recommending this book to my colleagues both in hospice and in the greater health care community.

As someone trained and experienced in counseling, I have been searching for years for a book like this! In my own practice, I have had to construct my own approach to incorporating the spiritual dimension of the human personality into the counseling process. With no outside help in constructing this approach, I often felt uncomfortable and even doubtful in what I was doing. Yet, the counseling process demanded that the spiritual dimension be included in so many individuals. Dr. Kavar has put together an amazing approach on how to integrate the essential spiritual aspect of the human person into the whole counseling process. Kudo's to Dr. Kavar for such a magnificent presentation!
