ACOSTA is a story about the entire Acosta family, but especially about Oscar Acosta, the feisty pitching coach who first turned around the Chicago Cubs and then the Texas Rangers followed by a minors Yankees team, before dying in an auto accident in the Dominican at age 49. The parents of Oscar and his sister Yolanda were immigrants who came to the U.S. from Mexico to work on other people's ranches in southeastern New Mexico. That Oscar, who everyone assumed would follow in his father's footsteps, should be discovered in high school and make his way up the ranks in professional baseball is a fascinating story in itself. But in addition to a central thread about Oscar, there is also the story of his father, who, after years of poverty, succumbed to a temptation that would have shattered a less loving family, and Yolanda, who chose to forgive the perpetrator of a heinous crime in order to avoid a lifetime of negativity and despair.

A very interesting book. The family lived 25 miles from my town and we kept Oscar Acosta's son at our daycare in Portales. Nice man. I know his sister Carol too..

This is a really good FICTION book! It is unfortunate that the brother, Oscar, is not here to defend himself. I personally played baseball with him and knew him very well and he would be embarrassed, ashamed, and appalled at what this book says, which is mostly false. If his sister actually knew him, she would have known that Oscar was a private man that loved his family dearly and did everything he could to provide for his wife and three kids. If you are thinking of buying this book to see what Mr. Oscar Acosta's life was like, I would advise you to think twice, because this is a FICTION book that does not tell the TRUE story of Oscar Acosta. Maybe it tells the true story of his sister but not him. My heart goes out to his widowed wife, three children, and to his mom for the embarrassment that his sister is putting them through.

The author was a family friend. The events recorded here are remembered a little differently than the way my family remembers. However, I'm sure she had good intentions. She's left this earth, now and I will never say anything disparaging about her.

I agree with the other reviews. This is more about the author rather than the life of Oscar. I knew Oscar in high school and I also knew him as a very private person and he would not have approved of the story that was told. The story only proved how unbalance his sister is.
