Larry Rich left the USA in 1972 to live in Israel, in the Jezreel Valley. For more than thirty years, as soldier, father, businessman, he has had first-hand knowledge of the terrible conflict that has raged between Israeli Jews and Palestinians. For anyone who has ever wondered about real people living in the midst of the Middle East conflict, this book offers candid and revealing insights. The author has collected stories and surprising human profiles from both Arabs and Israelis through his work at a hospital that is staffed by and serves the health needs of all people in the region. Its a raw and engaging read, written not by a visiting correspondent, but by someone living there. The author wants those of us outside the Middle East to know the way politics and headlines affect real people.

I urge you to read this book by the Director of Development at the Emek Medical Centre in Israel. He tells stories that are both heart-rending and heart-warming and, at least to me, shows there is hope for the end of the apparently never-ending Arab-Israeli conflict.

The staff, the nurses and the doctors in this hospital in Afula in Northern Israel, located near the geometric centre of where the Hizbollah rockets landed by the hundreds in July and August, are devoted to trying to bring peace through non-discrimination. They treat Arab (including many Arabs from Jenin in the West Bank, the heart of one of the terrorist movements) and Jew and Druse and Bedouin alike. They invite Arab doctors from the West bank to visit their facilities and treat patients who are referred by these doctors for specialist treatment.

I cannot do justice to this extraordinary collection of true stories. Read it for yourself and come away with some hope.
