"I knew I would love Oh Great, Now I Can Hear Dead People, from the title, but even so, it still had me giggling out loud. You'll love this book. It's laugh out loud funny, yet warm and touching and very modern."

Mary Cummings - Editor, Work Your Way Magazine

I had a smile on my face, chuckled out loud many times and even shed a couple of tears during the touching moments! Thank you for a GREAT read, Ms. Durbin! Keep up the good work!"

I have found Deborah's book to be a valuable resource that I dip in and out of regularly. She covers the practicalities of freelance writing, as well as offering tips to succeed and offers tips on: structure, rights, payment, etiquette and opportunities in the marketplace. As a 'how to' guide, it cuts right to the chase.

In the first place, for the price, there's just not that much book. It doesn't go into any kind of detail. Some of the advice is flat out wrong. The book is poorly written, with run on sentences, dangling participles, misplaced modifiers and a host of other mistakes. A close edit and a trip through spell-check would have fixed a lot of them. Some of the advice given is then contradicted later in the book. It makes me angry that I wasted my money on this.

Sharon Kendrick | The New Writer

Though a slim volume in size, Deborah Durbin manages to pack in a great deal of information. A combination of practical advice about the potential markets available to freelance writers and a section on motivation and self-belief, I’ll be dipping in and out of this invaluable reference book regularly, for both inspiration and encouragement.

Covering a large spectrum of routes into writing, Durbin points out that small, regular contribution to magazines, such as letter writing, can bring in a steady stream of money, as well as providing the much-need profile in such a competitive market. The eBook market is also discussed, with particular emphasis on non-fiction books, and the wide range of topics that could be of interest to readers. There are hundreds of things that you know that other people will want to know.

Similarly, practical advice is given about basic preparation when sending out work, such as the correct way to send out a manuscript or writing a letter to a publication or a publisher.
The final chapters offer guidance of a different kind. Drawing from her experience of writing about mind, body and spirit, Durbin provides some great supportive words of motivation and self-belief. Following the ascertain that “Writing IS a proper job”, I found this chapter particularly inspiring.

It is a very good book for beginners. Not too specific on the changes made due to the internet. A lot of good areas suggested for markets.

This is the ideal book for anyone wanting to get their writing published. Not only does the writer make you feel enthused about writing and keen to get started but also gives the reader a clear idea of how they can get a foot in the door even if they have never been published before.
Each chapter is relevant, useful and concise and gives the reader a way to plan their own writing future as well as giving starting points for generating ideas and exactly how to make contact with potential editors and publishers. The lay out also makes it easy to dip in and out for future reference.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone that is serious about getting their words in print.

5.0 out of 5 stars New writer's bible
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 12, 2011
I have just finished reading Deborah Durbin's bible for new aspiring writers. This is a brilliant how to book with practical tips on the main sources of paid writing. A no punches pulled, easy to read book... yet it contains a positive guide on realistic ways to deal with editors and rejection slips. Not many writers or professionals are that willing to share their secrets to success in such a constructive way. Better than going on a long drawn out and impersonal course. This gives you a 'speed dial for success' and has definitely inspired me to pitch more articles.

The reader feels that Deborah is actually talking to them personally..yes that means YOU!
