Gift or a Given?: A Theology of Healing for the 21st Century Kindle Edition

4.0 4.0 out of 5 stars 6 ratings

Most books on the topic of spiritual healing focus on practical aspects of services and liturgies and on testimonies of miraculous cures. Starting from an acceptance of the reality of healing in personal experience the author attempts to unpack the theological implications of what he has seen and done. He comes to the conclusion that the usual focus of the church on healing as a charismatic gift from an interventionist God is a distraction from the presence of healing throughout the natural world and human life. He sees healing as a perspective, which can also be extended to inter-faith dialogue and the world of politics and the environment. Finally, he provides a practical example of how such a perspective can be applied in the life of the worshipping community.

The author offers lots to ponder and think on in these pages. While reading I often sensed the author's voice which brought particular passages to life. With the various theological excursions, anecdotes and examples from parish settings, there were several points of entry and re-entry into the heart of the book: are the healings we witness a gift from God that is an exception to the order of things in the cosmos? Or are the healings we witness a part of God's healing activity in the cosmos? I won't give a spoiler alert, so you'll have to find out on your own.

Atkinson's serviceable prose and clarity of style make for a volume of well-timed wisdom on the often nebulous stuffs of hands-on healing. Drawing from years of personal experience, I've found this book to be something of a boon to my students: it walks a middle way, neither claiming too much nor too little within the realms of what it is possible to experience when approaching such a hot-button topic as healing, healing practices with the church, and the care-giving required throughout. Good attention is paid to both those receiving healing and to those involved in the sharing of this ministry. Theological soundness is countered happily by plenty of pragmatic counsel and narrative.

A thought provoking description of heeling.

It is not part of my experience of ministry, so I found the book challenging, which is a good thing and will make me look again at what is happening.

. Weisheiten?
