Infinite Fictions: Essays on Literature and Theory Kindle Edition

5.0 5.0 out of 5 stars 1 rating

David Winters has quickly become a leading voice in the new landscape of online literary criticism. His widely-published work maps the furthest frontiers of contemporary fiction and theory. The essays in this book range from the American satirist Sam Lipsyte to the reclusive Australian genius Gerald Murnane. Meditations on style, form and fictional worlds sit side-by-side with overviews of the cult status of Oulipo, the aftermath of modernism, and the history of continental philosophy. Infinite Fictions is indispensable reading for anyone interested in the forefront of literary thought.

Editorial Reviews

Review

It's only too easy, these days, to fall into a funk over the state of books in the world, but the range of work addressed in Infinite Fictions offers no small measure of reassurance to the faith-challenged, myself included, and Winters's deeply thoughtful criticism is an excellent reminder that even a generation or two hence there will be witnesses around to remind us that literature matters. Indeed, this initial salvo reads like an early effort from what Alfred Kazin once called "the critic who can set up standards for his age." ~ J.C. Hallman, The Brooklyn Rail

Top review from the United States

Reviewed in the United States on June 29, 2018
Winters is among the very best of critics to address really contemporary innovative and experimental fiction and theory, and to do so in a way that's accessible and interesting. These are, generally, review articles that appeared elsewhere, so are short, but they're always insightful. Definitely recommended for anyone who has any interest in the cutting edge of innovative prose.
