Quaker Quicks - Money and Soul: Quaker Faith And Practice And The Economy Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 12 ratings

If money troubles your soul, try this down-to-earth Quaker perspective on economies large and small. The economy, as we usually encounter it, has nothing to do with values or faith. After all, the “invisible hand” caters to no religious belief. It is all a matter of science, we are assured: economists have mastered the mathematical formulas for growth and prosperity. Our role as individuals is simply to work, consume and save, each adding our bit to the sum totals of economic activity that will keep the system humming along; the experts will take care of everything else. This breezy values-free story, however, is unlikely to be a comfortable fit for anyone who takes seriously the challenge of bringing our faith into the world. Knotty issues around economics crop up at every turn, especially if we are willing to ask the big questions: What is the economy for? How much is enough? What needs to be equal? How is well-being best measured? Who should decide? In Money and Soul this search for answers, through a Quaker lens, gives a taste of the power of applying faith values to our economic story.

Pamela Haines has written a reflection on economics that brings discussion to the layman’s level and disputes the economic model the experts have placed around us.  Drawing on her own Quaker “testimonies,” Haines offers suggestions for transforming our economy into something more consistent with our spiritual values.  She sees the current system as based on greed. Her own values are seen in such recurring terms as “mending and repairing,” and “simplicity.”  She urges us not to wait passively in hopes of a more equitable economy.  “Our world,” she writes, “needs people of faith who are . . . outspoken about economics.”  Her opposition to aspects of the system such as continuous growth may strike some as debatable but her own evident commitment and passion make her argument persuasive.

Money and Soul is a small book with a big message: it's time to ask ourselves, "What is the purpose of the economy?" Pamela Haines provides examples of people who are questioning the old basics and working toward economic goals that are good for people and the environment. This book is a thoughtful, helpful resource for those of us who suspect that something is wrong with our consumption model.

Good grief. What a joke this book was. The author wants to speak of how the current financial system needs reform(it does) to address inequality and environmental/social justice by applying Quaker principles and “what rings true”. Then she proceeds to speak of how the umbrella Quaker organization her group belongs to is heavily invested in the stock market. She tells us that this caused much consternation among her fellow Quakers since they are stake holders in the same system they want to upend. So what happened? Well, she doesn’t say. I assume that they felt super bad about it but stayed in the system because of whatever reasons they convinced themselves of. Quakerism and all similar social/religious movements are just husks of their pious beginnings because of the financial benefits of empire over-riding their vaunted principals and this book proves it.

Everything the author suggests would make for a better world, but I am still cynical about whether this can be achieved in my lifetime. Despite all the denials of the U.S. and UK governments, it is clear in my opinion that the world and its ecosystems are going to hell in a handcart, if their policies based on individualism, selfish greed and unrestricted material growth continue to be followed. Everybody knows the world and it's people are in terrible trouble, or to be truthful an existential crisis, but the denial goes on and the politics of greed get worse. I think these governments will destroy the world before sanity can prevail and stop them. A really interesting read, well researched and well written, but where is the will of the masses to put these plans into action? Highly recommended reading for Quakers and open minded spiritual seekers of all persuasions.
