About the author
Simon Small lives in Glastonbury with his wife, Jane, who is an accomplished artist.

"Star Pilgrim", published in 2011, is a novel exploring deep questions about the nature of existence. Since first learning to read as a child, he always wanted to write a novel. Fortunately, he never knew it would take another forty years. It is a coming together of many years of spiritual exploration and his love for science fiction. First and foremost it is written to be a great story that anyone can enjoy. If the big ideas around which it is woven resonate, so much the better.
"From the Bottom of the Pond", published in 2007, is a personal reflection on the contemplative life within the Jesus tradition. It is still in print and selling well. It has been featured a number of times on national radio in the UK and has sold far beyond the boundaries of conventional religion.
"Living Contemplation" was published in 2015 and is a companion volume to "From the Bottom of the Pond". It is a collection of forty one short pieces of writing that have emerged from the depths of a still mind. They reflect on the encounter of contemplative awareness with daily life in the world. Written over a period of ten years, the writings cover a wide range of topics, including prayer, inner peace, the nature of love, Christian theology, the mystery of existence, death and dying.

The story told is a common one amongst many more esoteric or hidden traditions brought out of hiding.
Loved it from beginning to end.
Anamnesis - literally loss of forgetfulness - also plays a very significant part in the story - `[He] knew in that moment of anamnesis that something with roots deep in the past was coming to fruition, through the present, into the future and that he was at the centre of what ever it was. For a few seconds the sense of hidden purpose to his life felt overwhelming'.
Simon's characters are all life-enhancingly wonderful and totally convincing. They, as does the entire story, have a strongly positive and optimistic quality - not a Panglossian optimism of the ego but much more spiritual in nature; ordinary people drawn into acts of great courage and tenacity by circumstances that they wouldn't have chosen but simply accept as their lot and with the support of disparate strangers who join the action because they choose to.
Whilst nothing is new, there is always someone out there who can take a timeless concept (truth) and express it in a way that is new, fresh and possibly in the spirit of the zeitgeist of the day in order to communicate such timeless truth to many out there who are - unbeknown to themselves - waiting for such revelation.
This book is bound to have its distracters, I can almost hear them now. But for those who a prepared to start out on their own pilgrimage in order to see new wonders, then this book is for you.

Since my decision to read things that are outside the usual run of books, I've come across some extraordinary tales. I've had my antennae up for unusual stories and I was recommended this book by a Twitter chum. The odd thing was neither the title, the cover nor even the blurb appealed logically to me at all yet I felt a pull to buy and read it. I bought a copy, and when it arrived a few days later, I began to read within a few minutes. I spent most of the day reading it, so compelling was the book.
I'm not going to give any spoilers but so many elements resonated within me, from the innate spirituality of the main character Joseph to the wonderful character of Leola, whose nature and approach reminded me of a very dear friend of mine.
Simon Small has done a very haunting job of weaving a tale full of profound truths and mysteries and questions into an entirely readable novel, so that the process of approaching those deep matters does not become dusty, dry or dull.
I suspect that this is a book that ought not to be read by someone without at least a bit of spirituality or with antipathy to such but you do not need to be a believer, or a Christian to find the story poetically well-written and with a dramatic flow that sucks you into the plot, and deposits you gently back into reality at the end, changed in ways you might not expect.
