Framespotting: Changing How You Look At Things Changes How You See Them Kindle Edition

3.6 3.6 out of 5 stars 48 ratings

Look at it this way... Everywhere we look, “framing” affects how we see things. Frames restrict our view, keeping us from seeing the whole truth, and subtly influencing our take on everything from deck-chairs to democracy. This upbeat, punchy guide to framespotting will open your eyes and your mind. Learn to notice frames and it’s amazing what else you’ll see: fresh ideas; how and why you’re being hoodwinked; and how you’re part of the transition from growth to growing up. Framespotting is empowering and liberating. And you’ll never look at sprinklers or economists the same way again.

Editorial Reviews

Review

This book is a really salutary encouragement to challenge what you think are the obvious ways to frame questions and possibilities. It is hopeful, realistic and original; what more could you ask from a book about learning to think afresh? --Rowan Williams, Former Archbishop of Canterbury; Master of Magdalene College, Cambridge

A very enjoyable read. I loved the simple, crisp language, and the illustrations work really well. There's a refreshing determination here to change the whole 'mood music' behind the way we address important issues. --
Jonathon Porritt

A stimulating, lateral view of life. --
Rt Hon Peter Hain MP, Former Leader of the House of Commons
At a time when the medium has become the message, and transformed the message, it is crucial that we retain the ability to think outside the box and the frame...in other words laterally. This work en-courages just that in an entertaining and challenging way. --
Michael Mansfield QC, Radical Lawyer; Professor of Law at City University

This is a great read and I believe it should be introduced into the education curriculum. Throughout our history we have a bundle of myths and fallacies that get ingrained into our thinking as truths. They are not truths - they are lies and deceptions. Framespotting is a fantastic approach to taking a look at the world around you, and asks you 'how do you see this?' in wonderfully subtle fashions. Halfway through this very short read I began to feel hope again, I began to feel that if everyone read this book and we incorporated a shift in our local, social, global languages that it is possible for human kind to began actively building and creating a future. Our present direction has limited futures. A shift in this paradigm will enable future as an outcome, rather than an idealized fantasy.
Read this book!!!! Everyone just read this book! You do matter and what you act on can literally change the world.

Helps one to look at things from a different perspective rather than the promoted perspective of whoever is spreading their propaganda. Much of the early chapters in this very brief book are useful and give the reader some good information. When it turns the focus to political policy and the environment, the information takes you down a path that, to me, leaves you with feeling that the problem may be insurmountable. I am glad I read it, but not really sure if it gave me anything worthwhile that I could actually use to solve the issues they brought up.

This is not a book about the widespread use of "framing" throughout society - which would have been an interesting book.

Instead, it is a book written to push a political agenda about global warming. But the book title uses an ultimately dishonest frame that hides this from potential readers.

I bought “Framespotting” on the recommendation of friends, and liked it so much I’ve purchased it as a gift for other friends and family members. It’s a cheerful, engaging and smart book that shows how people and corporations work to shape our opinions and our behavior. You’ll recognize how accurate and useful the book is. "Framespotting" lets us see through the fog, and reminds us not to leave our brains at the door! Buy a copy, you’ll enjoy the ride.

The main focus of this book is global warming. Yes, I learned quite a bit but I feel tricked. If the main focus was going to be issues regarding global warming it should have been mentioned somewhere on the cover. So "framing" works both ways I guess.

Was expecting something more useful. Was hoping to have good examples of how to really think differently with various kinds of examples.

Such a good book. I read the last 40 pages in the past hour and 50 pages yesterday. (20 pages last week).. I found it really easy to read and so informative, positive and encouraging.
I was stunned by the synchronicity within this book to things I've said and seen recently.
I like the overall frame that it exposed to me, that lurking thought 'who am I to be involved in politics or ecological issues' I've been an oil trader! I haven't lived frugally! I don't know enough about politics! People will judge me and call me a hypocrite!
I just always come back to the same conclusion, either spend the rest of my life being the same and look back with regret for fear of being judged and not believing in myself or make the changes to be part of something I can be proud of and am passionate about. Be part of the same problem that made me so sick or be part of the solution. And actually we are all involved in politics and the ecological issues are so serious does it matter what people think!?
A lot of love and hard work has gone into the things we have developed and so we can have a lot of respect for them while realising some things are not working very well. We can use that same passion, intelligence, love and hard work to achieve a better system.
Thank you for this book, there were too many good sentences to quote one or two so all I can say is 'do the right thing' and 'buy buy buy'.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but misleading
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 12, 2019
The book presents itself as being about the way society manipulates us into viewing the world in a certain way (frames) using language e.g. tax cuts are spoken off as "tax relief", which presents tax as a burden, rather than as a subscription payment to a society that provides services. However, only about 25% of the book relates to this "framing". The remaining 75% of the book is about climate change and how we desperately need to do something about it. I completely agree with that but there was nothing in the book description to suggest that that's what the book was about. I had no idea until I started reading it. Although I completely agree with the book's premises and conclusions, and I enjoyed reading it, and I would firmly recommend it, I cannot give it 5 stars due to it being rather misleading. The book description should make it clear that the majority of it is about climate change.

One tiny criticism: the title is a little misleading. The frames it refers to are certainly applicable to almost anything, but this a book with an agenda: to face up to the greatest challenges of our age with neither fear nor despair. It achieves this with aplomb. Climate change, corporate control, political failure, a compromised media... we are all being "framed". But the solutions which become apparent when we "zoom out" from the frames vested interests like to place on the big issues are disarmingly simple. This short, deftly illustrated book takes an hour to read yourself and is one to give to everyone. It just says it all so much better than you ever could in the pub. Genius.

1.0 out of 5 stars Misleading book title

The book title and blurb on the back are very misleading.

This very short book is almost all about climate change and has very little content on how information in general is framed by the media, politicians, corporations etc.

It started out as an interesting read then turned into a leftist propaganda manual about climate change. Very disappointed, much better scientific books on climate change.
