Conjuring Dirt: Magick of Footprints, Crossroads & Graveyards Kindle Edition

4.9 4.9 out of 5 stars 26 ratings

Right under your feet lies one of the best magickal tools a practitioner could use in their workings - dirt. Whether it comes from graveyards, footprints, crossroads, or elsewhere, the dirt from different places is a powerful aid in the magick to your workings. When we work with dirt, we’re working with one of the most fundamental elements of being human. From dust we appeared and to dust we shall return, the saying goes. Dirt creates a magickal, energetic link that heightens any endeavor. This element of earth brings a deep spiritual dynamic and connection to any working. Since it might be difficult to decide where to start - because dirt covers the planet, even under the oceans - author Taren S narrows the focus to specific magickal-spiritual locations, locations of merit and power, for you to collect your own dirt. Implementing dirt into magickal workings requires more skill than its availability would denote. Dirt workings involve the realms of light and dark magick, healing, curses, and death. This book will guide, help, and warn all those who wish to use dirt for magickal workings.

Review

Learning about magic can sometimes feel a little like reading a cookbook, but Conjuring Dirt manages to take an underserved and humble aspect of folk magic and give it new life. Taren acts as a tour guide or museum docent to the world of soils and dirts deployed for sorcerous purposes. This isn’t a by-the-numbers sort of tour, though, as Taren enlivens informative sections on graveyard dirt or working at the crossroads with stories drawn from history, folklore, and her own life. You learn about the uses of dirt taken from church grounds or courthouses, but also get the back story on a Beaufort, South Carolina politician who feared that people were hexing him using dirt from a local burnt-down church. She discusses using dirt from an enemy’s garden, and takes you to New Orleans and the “Father of the Garden District,” whose own botanical bounty was stolen away by his neighbors, piece by piece after his wife died. Like the very best guidebooks or local excursions, you’re accompanied by someone who answers your questions before you even ask them and who has a tale to tell, about every stop along the way that makes you feel like you’re getting the inside scoop. As a practical guide it’s full of useful tidbits, too, but the stories are what will keep you coming back to this compact-but-captivating little book.

-- Cory Thomas Hutcheson, author of New World Witchery

Reader Reviews:

"So, hoodoo, this term has different meanings in different parts of North America (100% African American in origin) what it means in the spiritual melting pots of Louisiana, the Carolina's and Appalachians is different than in Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland and Buffalo, that is still the case from over 70 years ago till now, its a cultural term. Taren S. is a woman who has been involved in both conjure and ATR's for 40 years. Taren was part of her regional cultures magic before it was en vogue to be involved in conjure or hoodoo and anyone who takes the time to learn about Taren S. will quickly know that." ~ Utu Witchdoctor, author of, "Conjuring Harriet "Mama Moses" Tubman and the Spirits of the Underground Railroad"

"There are very few books on the subject of using Biblical Scripture in magic, and even less that actually preserve the oral and written practices of this tradition as it is worked. Most mention the practice and describe some example of magickal applications; but, Taren S. in her Book, "Hoodoo in the Psalms" gives much more." ~ Orion Foxwood, Southern & Appalachian Conjure-Worker, Traditional Witch, author of, "The Candle and the Crossroad: A Book of Appalachian Conjure

"While addressing the box many of us see the Christian Psalms in, and embracing both the Old Religion of the Pagans and the Judeo-Christian root of the Psalms and how they are used in Hoodoo, Taren S. presents a thorough system of magick in tradition of the practical occult spells books and formulas many of us cut our teeth on. - Christopher Penczak, author of THe Casting of Spells and the Inner Temple of Witchcraft

I love this book. She tells her own story about it but also the history of things. She gives so much good detail in things but also encourages to make ur practice your own. I really am going to have this book as a reference for some of my workings and she has high respect for the dead.

I absolutely love this book! This book provides a deeper understanding of working with the land you stand on. This book it’s one of those books that says you have to do it my way or you are wrong, while this book does proved recipes, Taren S. also provided background information on the different types of dirt and the different connections to the dirt. A couple of examples of things she provides a better understanding of is working with the spirts of the dirt and things the grow in the dirt, oh I mustn’t forget working with graveyard dirt. All in all I enjoyed this book and highly recommend.

I wish we had more published authors that actually share their experiences and knowledge verses the same old same old you can google it books. Taren takes you through a journey, her journey to her love of dirt and how to utilize its many magickal properties. While also guiding you to really connect to your spirit and the spirit of dirt all around us. Truly an amazing read and resource for anyone who is wanting to go the next step past 101 magick and dive into a resource that is readily available in our own backyard.

I love this book and will be referencing it a lot in the near future. The author is highly knowledgeable and experienced. Anyone looking for knowledge on dirt should check this book out!

This was an excellent resource, well-organized, easy to read, and full of important information. Depending on your path, you might’ve done magick work that involved dirt, or heard about how it can be extremely useful for certain workings. I greatly appreciated how each kind of dirt was given its own section, uses, lore, and the best way to use it is all included. (How to collect it is especially important for graveyard dirt, although all magick tools should be collected respectfully). I’ve done work with dirt before, but I loved being able to read more in depth, and grow my knowledge further. Highly recommend for all witches!
