How the Establishment Lost Control Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 7 ratings

The post-war consensus is breaking up. The general election result, the 2014 Scottish referendum and the Brexit vote all testify to an insurgent mood amongst swathes of the population. This book attempts to explain these dramatic developments and to show how they question received notions about politics, history and how change happens.

Sally Matthews
5.0 out of 5 stars The book clarifies what some of the future struggles will be and how we should prepare for them
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 18, 2017
Really good book. I think the most important contribution to the debate this book makes is its warning about the future. Yes, the establishment has lost a lot of control (there's very little confidence in establishment ideas, for example), but how does the Left stop that same establishment regaining control once the Left is in government? This book argues that we need a strong independent Left that can fight for its own agenda. The left-wing leadership of the Labour Party won't be enough alone. As Tony Benn argued, what happens outside Parliament is more important than what happens inside. We have to learn from the mistakes of Syriza if we are to avoid similar mistakes here in Britain. And what a waste that would be - to lose this once in a lifetime opportunity.

Essential reading if you want a deeper political understanding of the turbulent times we live in, and how we can be part of the drive for change after a lifetime of society being run exclusively for the benefit of the rich.
